Dozens of terms have been grossly misused by media professionals, pundits, politicians, and social media types throughout the Israel-Hamas war, notably these eleven.
The ones outside the Nova Exhibition here in NYC are now megaphoning the narrative “How could they have been dancing just miles away from a Holocaust”. Honestly, I don’t know how Jews stay sane 😕.
Good piece but I have one objection: your use of the term "West Bank" in a way that further improperly normalizes the term. The areas called Judea and Samaria since Israel's biblical days were re-named The West Bank by Jordan in 1950 to de-legitimize Israel's right to them. When I refer to these areas I call them Judea and Samaria (a.k.a. The West Bank); NOT as The West Bank (a.k.a. Judea and Samaria). The difference is subtle but important. One reinforces our indigenous right to these areas; the other furthers our enemies' agenda and lies. We should not give a hoot what the international community thinks or what horrible blunders Israeli leaders have made with regard to allowing Jew-hating Islamists (a.k.a. Palestinians) a foothold in Judea and Samaria. G-d gave us these lands and I pray that He will help us take them back, with Jews being the main residents and only friendly non-Jews as minority residents. How we refer to Judea and Samaria won't win our fight, but it's a start.
Great article on misused words. You've used one incorrect pronoun: Raphael Lemkin was a man, so it's 'he' who 'explained the need for a new legal term'.
It will be wasted on anti-Israel idealogues like The View and Fareed Zhakharia but would be a great discussion piece at any American synagogue where well-meaning people subject to constant anti-Israel media could benefit from another point of view.
John Spencer, head of Urban Warfare Studies at West Point, has written on Israel's operation in Gaza and said they constitute the gold standard for urban warfare
I’m glad you brought up that Newsweek article w the quote from the West Point guy bc it came up on a discussion thread on a Shadi Hamid article (don’t ask me why I read that arrogant pos; bc I don’t like to sleep at night?) and here was his (arrogant) reply:
“Um, right, because if the chair of urban warfare studies at West Point says it, then it must be true? So you're just quoting someone because that person shares your priors? You could have easily quoted the the vast majority who disagree with John Spencer, who's very much alone on this. You could have quoted ICJ rulings or Karim Khan at the ICC. But they're biased of course, unlike Spencer, so you could have just quoted Biden himself who has said that Israel's bombings are "indiscriminate" and that the entire military campaign is "over the top" or the various US officials who have said that Israel is actively impeding the delivery of humanitarian aid. Or you could listen to any of the heads of the major international relief organizations who say that Israel is using mass starvation as a weapon of war. Or you could have just done your own research on the Iraqi Body Count website and compared the figures without taking my word for it. Or you could have looked at this analysis which documents in exhaustive detail how the Gaza war has been more destructive than any other conflict in 21st century: https://wapo.st/3WYys2k. On a per capital per day basis, the number of civilians Israel has killed is unique in the 21st century. But you found a quote in a Newsweek article. My bad.”
The entire argument for Israel is filed away as a sharp, right-wing, conservative idea for all people like Shadi. And he is a mainstream journalist for the Washington Post, why? Probably bc he’s not white. It doesn’t matter whether he is extremely biased and unable to see the side from the angle of a West Point, urban warfare dept. head, it only matters his identity, so the elite, journalist class can try to quickly erase its history of racial preference for whites.
Here is a BIG one that has been overlooked: FAMINE, not hunger, but 'famine'.
Have u seen any fotos of skeletal kids or adults? The older ladies look mighty plump, and the rest of the population looks quite fit to me. No skinny, snotty-nosed, flies-in-their-eyes, miserable, crying children or infants.
No, it is 'famine' that is besetting the Arabs in Gaza, no matter that Hamas steals the food from the trucks in motion and it is not even condemned in print.
So 'famine' is the word, but try not to laugh when it is repeated on air and in print.
Care to explain how the ongoing conflict is not bringing about the extreme scarcity of food, despite most accounts confirming such a thing is taking place?
Great article but you missed a word- “apartheid “.

I was wondering about that! Thanks

and yet Hamid believes all his sources are truthful. The cerebrum in Hamid's head doesn't function well.

At least you're rattling his cage if he types “on a per capital per day”…
But is it worth it?
Lol I don’t think his cage has been rattled. I wish. I hope-?

I don’t think anyone laughs at conceptualizing a famine taking place unless they’re devoid of humanity themselves.
I am human and I do laugh when the nefarious term 'famine' is applied to where the situation is not even close to the word: Gaza.

Excellent article. I hope it reaches some of the people who desperately need to read it - the pro terrorist sheep.
