The complication is the Jihad of Islam. Can the peace exemplified by US and Japan be achieved by Israel and the Arabs? It will require a Reformed Islam.
Bingo. That is it in a nutshell. Without religious reform from the Islamists, there will never be peace ANYWHERE (because the goal of Jihad is a world-wide Caliphate). This is something the world is very very slowly (too slowly) beginning to realize.
I’m not sure why anyone is focused on real peace. Hamas is not about to give up their war against the Jews. They have demonstrated rigid determination. The goal should be extracting the hostages from a complicated situation and assuring Israel’s security in the medium term. More than that is unrealistic and not necessary at this time. From here Israel can move forward by not allowing conditions to exist that could make Oct 7 a reality. Israel knows how to protect itself.
The only sustainable peace - forget " eternal"- the West can hope for is based on Islam's reform and their ceasing to be the enemy they made themselves to be, former world conquerors, twice defeated, and still attacking the entire West. A third conquest. That's the relevant historical context
This is an outstanding explication of the “great man”theory of history. One could argue that Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin also embodied the great man theory when they agreed to their historic peace accord in our modern era. The inference is that a new great man must emerge with humility and courage, and be willing to risk reputation for peace. Can Netanyahu become more like George Washington? Who, on the other side, would be his Palestinian equivalent?
Re.objections to President Trump’s style that on the surface seem only pompous, I suggest reading his “The Art of the Deal”. He combines it with his mastery of the Art of Persuasion. And it does not involve war but it does carry a big stick.
This peace, if achieved, is based on pure hope. Like in 2008 when Gaza was given everything by Israel with the sincere desire for a lasting coexistence of prosperity and cooperation. The experience with Hamas so far has been one of massive incessant lying and ploys and cheating without let up. For the hostages I hope with every pure heart for their return, all 48 of them, dead and especially alive...
I'm sure the piece is excellent - like most appearing in Future of Jewish - but since it is written to bring accuracy to history, I couldn't help to noticing right at the beginning:
> Poland completely ceased to exist for a short time.
In fact, for 123 years (1795-1918)
And that's ignoring brief Soviet occupation (1939–1941) followed by the extended domination (1945–1989) in the last century.

Always and forever the problem.
An intellectual diatribe that has no meaning in regards to the history of the Middle East and what is happening today in Israel.

Brilliant analysis we are left to pray 🙏🏽
