While I admire your honesty, and your goal- how wonderful to go to Israel-… I disagree with your assessment that American conservatives only care about Jews as they are useful against Muslims. That is a shameful statement, and if at all true, representative of a tiny scintilla of conservatives. What about Jewish conservatives? I know scores of people who would take issue with many of your claims….I am frankly taken aback by your broad brushstrokes negating the good in America.
Everything written here resonated with me. I get it. And after all, this is an opinion piece coming from the heart, based on one person's experiences and perceptions -- not the front-page of the New York Times.
It used statements which were very general- not personal. For example, I didn’t get the idea at all that the writer personally experienced a bunch of conservative people presenting themselves to him that they wanted Jews to kick Muslim ass. (Pardon the vulgarity-). Just me. I love Israel, I am part Jewish. I am also a conservative person who loves America. That’s why I responded the way I did.
I don't know where the view arose that Israel is a buffer for the democratic world, but this is how Israel is talked about in the West across the board. The USA is a good example of a bad democracy that doesn't need a buffer from Jerusalem at least, Israel is and should be a home, a home for Jews, not a buffer against anyone. and not on behalf of. Unfortunately, Finland also supports Arab terrorism with 400 million annually, has been doing so for 12 years, if you still ask what forces are behind terror, we have it on the right and the left and almost equally.
The people do what they do, but the politicians make the decisions, and thank God there are only a little over 5.5 million of us. And democracy is not exactly better than the USA's. Equally corrupt, but politically a wider part of the parties enjoy corruption regardless of color.
I think Steve's writings had arguments and the arguments were based on experience, because I haven't been under the same sweater for a day, so it's pointless to belittle the feelings of another. I am not Jewish, but I could move to Israel myself.
I'm a conservative evangelical and I support Jews and Israel, and not because of some convoluted end times schema. I support your decision to move to Israel and your explanation makes sense to me. I hope you experience belonging and happiness there.
What did you think of Godzilla Minus One? My favorites swag between the early ones and the recent remakes before Kong. Although the first one with King Kong was good. As was Kong itself.
Also thanks for saying the end of times coupled with Israel support is not your calling.
I was an orthodox shul director for a decade and saw many pro Israel evangelical groups come in for fellowship events. On a few occasions the cat did get out of the bag in conversation. Because of the money involved the Rabbi overlooked what was obvious to me. But I may be misreading the room.
I loved Godzilla Minus One. I like the Monsterverse movies too, although the 2014 Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island are probably the best of them, I also love King of the Monsters because we get to see so many of the classic Monsters so beautifully rendered.
My Christian beliefs do influence my support for Israel, but not as a mere pawn in an end times scenario. I think there are good general reasons to support Israel that any decent person should be able to grasp, particularly the fact that it's a democracy surrounded by hostile non-democratic regimes, the fact that there has been consistent Jewish presence in the land for 3000 years, and the fact that the Jewish diaspora have been one of the most persecuted people groups in history and Israel is the place where they can live together in relative peace and safety together. I truly can't wrap my head around people who think Israel is the bad guy in the middle east.
Probably something like "rapture ", "second coming", or "end times". Most evangelicals do hold to a particular eschatological view known as dispensationalism, which does include particular views of Israel's role in end times events. I don't hold that view.
I think that there are many of us these days who are wondering if this is 21st century America or Germany circa 1926ish. The walls aren't quite ready to come crashing down but there is clearly cause for concern here. Antisemitism on the far right, while reprehensible, isn't hard to see coming or deal with for that matter. However to learn, without qualification, that the bastions of education, many of which we Jews enthusiastically funded and supported, have also become hives of Jew hatred is a shock. This is a threat that we are not ready to effectively deal with.
Congratulations and Mazel Tov on your decision to make aliyah. There will be many challenges ahead for you but, ultimately, you will be in a place where the police, armed forces and government take your safety very seriously. Don't expect perfection in that regard. Israel had a very bad day on 10/7 and it can still happen again. But, balancing the equities, I believe that you are making a very smart decision. It's on my mind too.
Another evangelical here, 71 years old, who watched holocaust victims in the 1950s’ documentary series World At War, read Medical Block Buchenwald when I was twelve, read a lot more history, and realized that Jews had been chased by pure evil for a couple of millennia. The courage of Israel and the justice of your position captures me as well. May you find what you seek in your making Aliyah, and some of your criticisms are valid, but I reject other of your canards against Conservative America from your Progressive values. We will find our way here, apparently without you. Blessings!
Go to Israel and enjoy it. Congrats. But get bent for your over the top attacks on the United States that have nothing at all to do with the leftist radical Jew hate that drove your decision.
I am an Evangelical Christian Zionist, and have been an active supporter of Israel and the Chosen People for the past 25 years.
Having worked and travelled in Israel over the past 17 years, I have many dearly loved Israeli friends and acquaintances in Israel and a deep love for the Land. My most recent visit was for several weeks in late September to mid-October, 2024.
My love and support for the Chosen People and Israel has nothing whatsoever to do with End-Time ‘schemes’; it derives from what I see and understand from the Word of G-d (Tanakh & Brit Hadasha), and the witness of the Holy Spirit (Ruach Hakodesh) to my spirit. That said, I do view the current and near-term events of our world through the lenses of Biblical prophecy, using what is known as the Literal/Grammatical/Historical interpretive method (Hermeneutic). And, tragically, what I see does not bode well for Diaspora Jews.
On the basis of my understanding of Biblical prophecy, for many years I have been encouraging every Jewish American person I could to make Aliyah - as soon as possible. The primary reason is because I believe that the entire world is going to eventually become rabidly antisemitic, and Israel is, and will remain, the only place where the Jewish people can count on being able to defend themselves.
Another reason is because the Bible declares the Land of Israel is G-d’s special possession, and He has made it clear He not only wants His Chosen People back in the Land, He will bring them back - one way or another. In other words, every detail of every single promise made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and the people as a whole, will be fulfilled - in the Land of Israel.
So, while I join with others in lamenting certain of the views you have expressed in this work, I believe you are making the ‘right’ decision, am happy for you to go, and hope you will be greatly blessed in every respect when you settle in the Land.
So if all jews come to Israel antisemitism can thrive in the diaspora cause like in Arab countries most will never meet or understand jews... i do not want all jews in Israel but we need support from the diaspora even from non jews.
I understand your thoughts there Karen, and I realize that what I am saying is virtually impossible to accept, but I don’t believe it is going to make any difference how many Jews remain in the Diaspora in the end. That said the prophetic picture shows that not all Jews will make Aliyah - until the Messiah comes.
Again, I realize that what I am sharing is extremely hard to accept. In fact, I ran from G-d for 25 years because I did not want to believe these things myself - that’s how much I understand the reaction.
But ‘denial’, ‘positive’, or ‘wishful’ thinking doesn’t change reality in any respect, except in making us subject to consequences far worse than what we sought to escape by engaging in such vain efforts.
“You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” Ayn Rand
At any rate, what lies ahead is the darkest time in history; the darkest time for the world, as well as for the Chosen People. It will be a time of great shame for mankind, followed by judgement. BUT (Behold the Underlying Truth), G-d…
Jeremiah 30:7 (Tanakh)
“Ah, that day is awesome; there is none like it! It is a time of trouble for Jacob, but he shall be delivered from it.”
There will be Jews scattered over the world during this time, no doubt largely because they couldn’t, or didn’t want to, believe that things could reach this point - which will actually be worse than the Holocaust. Such people will come to lament their decisions, to the everlasting shame and judgement of those who persecute, or fail to help, them.
BUT G-d… But, G-d will fulfill His Word; He will preserve His Chosen People in the Land, and He will fulfill every last detail of His promises to them, and to humanity through them.
Zechariah 12:1-3 (Tanakh)
“A pronouncement: The word of the LORD concerning Israel.
The utterance of the LORD, Who stretched out the skies and made firm the earth, and created man’s breath within him:
Behold, I will make Jerusalem a bowl of reeling for the peoples all around. Judah shall be caught up in the siege upon Jerusalem, when all the nations of the earth gather against her. In that day, I will make Jerusalem a stone for all the peoples to lift; all who lift it shall injure themselves.”
This prophecy is being fulfilled now. And, together with many others, it will continue to unfold as we move through the days, months, and years ahead.
The whole world is being ‘tested’ by G-d; Jew and Gentile alike. Countless people have no clue; no understanding of what is truly going on, or what lies ahead. Untold others have some knowledge of these things, but reject the Biblical record as the ultimate authority on everything to which it speaks - and it speaks to the world in reference to the Chosen People and the Land. It is sad and tragic on so many levels.
But the saddest thing of all, is that there are so many Jews in that crowd; who are atheistic secular humanists, embrace New Age beliefs, ignore or reject spiritual reality altogether, or hold warped or distorted beliefs about the Word of G-d - in common with the Gentile masses, including many who claim to be, and may actually be, Christians.
There is much I wish I could communicate in regard to these matters, but the primary thing is to point you to the (written) Word of G-d, and the G-d of the Word; the G-d of Israel.
And may those with eyes to see and ears to hear, and hearts to receive the Truth, understand and turn to the true and living G-d for salvation and guidance in living out life with Him. May all the leaders and people of Israel become like:
“…the Issacharites, men who knew how to interpret the signs of the times, to determine how Israel should act…”
1 Chronicles 12:33a (Tanakh)
Am Israel Chai
Postscript:
Yes, as a Christian, I claim that Yeshua/Jesus, of the Tribe of Judah, is the Messiah King of Israel; the Lord of Heaven and Earth, the Son of God, the rightful heir of all things, and the Savior of the entire world. No one can or will be saved and receive eternal life with G-d apart from Him, though many who worshipped the true and living G-d; the G-d of Israel, have not known Him clearly.
It is through His sacrifice; His blood shed on the Cross of Calvary, that the Angel of Death may ‘pass over’ those who are under condemnation and subject to eternal judgment. He is, “…the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
I am Jewish and although I have a different take on your religious aspects of Israel in regards to the prophecies and such, I just want to say THANK YOU for your love and support for Israel and the Jewish people. We desperately need more support; we are only 15 million Jews in a world of 8 BILLION. About 185 million out of a billion Muslims in the world are radical Islamists who want death to all Jews (and Christians), and then add all the in the other haters... we really are outnumbered and need all the support we can get.
None of us comes to a complete, or comprehensive understanding of complex matters at once. And it isn’t even possible when it comes to the Word of G-d.
But ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’, and the most important thing is that a given individual have a love for the Truth that ‘binds’ them to honor it, when they encounter it. Even the best of us often fail to do so as we should, at least for a time.
Assuming an individual has such a love for Truth, and strives to search it out, particularly in regard to the Truth of G-d, sooner or later, what they encounter is going to be extremely hard to accept. And it is at those junctures that the individual must make the choice(s) that determine whether or not they will receive any further understanding.
In other words, if I am unwilling to accept what I know in my heart to be true then, at some point, I will either not be given any further Truth or worse, become unable to receive it even if it is undeniable.
Perhaps the best illustration of this, for those of the Jewish or Christian faiths, is the recorded struggles of the Prophets with the revelations of G-d, and the responses of the people of Israel to those revelations. (No people group would have ever been ‘better’.)
Another relevant example would be Pharaoh, who ‘hardened his heart’ again, and again, and again, until:
“…the LORD stiffened the heart of Pharaoh, and he would not heed them, just as the LORD had told Moses.”
Exodus 9:12 (Tanakh)
Again, there’s so much I would love to share, but the Truth that is pressing most heavily upon my heart is this:
Psalms 121:4-5 (Tanakh)
“See, the guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps! The LORD is your guardian, the LORD is your protection
at your right hand.”
Even if all the peoples of the world turned against the Chosen, and the nation of Israel, the G-d of Israel; the Creator of Heaven and Earth; the giver of Life, and the One in Whose hands the issues of life and death rests, remains faithful to His promises, and He will bring His people Israel through the fire. At the end of the Day, G-d is all Israel truly needs.
I am privileged to be of any help to the Chosen People, and I thank and praise
G-d for that privilege, as well as the blessings that flow from and through it.
My heart grieves for those who say they love G-d, and yet neglect to help, or worse yet, participate in harming, those whom G-d loves with an everlasting love. And I thankfully serve G-d in any and every way I can, especially in trying to help such people see the terrible mistakes they are making. In doing so, my hope and prayer is that they will repent and be given opportunities to make amends for their offenses to the G-d that claim to love, and the harm(s) they may have caused to His Chosen People.
I am one of the roughly 1/3 of Jews in this country who has figured it out ( obviously you have not) that the base of the Democrat party ( including self hating Jews) are anti- Israel and in reality anti-Semitic. American conservatives ( especially evangelical Christian’s & LDS ) are stronger supporters of the Jewish state THAN MOST liberal Jews who are either secular or in a reform denominations.
Amongst US president DJT is the strongest supporter of Israel in history even though ( like Nixon) 2/3 of American Jews voted & donated to the Jew hating socialist democrats.
You rail against this administration deporting these “hardworking illegals” but apparently do not give a damn about the victims of illegal aliens, the death from fentanyl, sex trafficking etc. please please make Aliyah & take the rest of the “lemming”Jews with you. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass.
You are really a lucky Jew indeed, but I didn't like the tone of your article. As someone who left the US for Israel many years ago, I did it because I recognized the privilege of being able to return to my ancestors homeland. I did it because every Pesach and ever prayer was for and about returning to Jerusalem since we were colonized.I did it for all my ancestors killed on their journey and many other similar reasons.
I never left the US for lack of love, respect and gratitude for the person I become only as a result of that great nation.
If you leave the US ,kiss the ground in gratitude first 🙏.
I understand the need to reset, yet fleeing the country seems drastic. The political divide in Israel is as great, or greater than it is here. If being a Jew among Jews is the answer for you then I wish you will. I'll stay here, proudly Jewish, and not give the haters my energy.
I am thankful everyday that I live in Israel. Don't get stressed about the bureaucracy, just be organised. The healthcare here is excellent. The love of life is unmatched.
That is a great article because it shows how blind people can be. The author of this article did not blame himself for ruining blue states by blindly voting for democrats. He did not say that he was wrong and that his vote helped his party to become antisemitic. He packed his bags and moved to ruin another country.
I praise your decision to immigrate to Israel. May you find joy, peace and prosperity there. I strongly suspect you will. I disagree with the premise that conservatives are responsible for the attacks and antipathy that Jews (and Christians) are experiencing worldwide. The unabashed animosity against Israel emanating from the Democratic Party still grows stronger and louder. Assaults against Jewish people are still happening in France and on the streets of Berlin. Mahmoud Abbas received a standing ovation in the European Parliament after reciting old lies about Israel and he downplayed the holocaust while standing next to the German Chancellor. Where are the Jewish votes and voices pushing back against the thinly veiled antisemitism that supports Israel’s mortal enemies? Where are the Jewish votes and voices standing up for Israel‘s right to a homeland with realistically defendable borders?
You will not be a stranger in a strange land - you will be home and your soul will recognize it - as one who left the USA in 1971 and moved to Israel - and yes Golda was my first Prime Minister! I would highly suggest you start learning Ivrit israeli style - you cannot purchase a dozen eggs reciting the Ahavta... B'hatzlacha!
What troubles me is how Jews can defend such acts of barbarism on 7 October with a clear conscience. At least Israelis understand who the enemy is meanwhile in the UK, the US & Europe the gates have been opened & they are becoming ever more emboldened - & - openly stating their intentions.
While I admire your honesty, and your goal- how wonderful to go to Israel-… I disagree with your assessment that American conservatives only care about Jews as they are useful against Muslims.
You have a beautiful, open heart! Thank you, again.
Indeed. Lefty Jews. Bad for America. Bad for Israel. And frankly, bad for the world
You are really a lucky Jew indeed, but I didn't like the tone of your article.
Ditto.
Indeed. Israel also has a problem with lefty Jews. Many of which are remnants of “hippy” America Jews who emigrated to Israel.
Everyone speaks English enough to get along in the meanwhile and they love to speak it.
What troubles me is how Jews can defend such acts of barbarism on 7 October with a clear conscience. At least Israelis understand who the enemy is meanwhile in the UK, the US & Europe the gates have been opened & they are becoming ever more emboldened - & - openly stating their intentions.
130 years?! Congrats on your longevity. I hope DOGE doesn’t cut off your social security checks.
His family. The OP appears to be a rabid Democrat.
To him : you are damning the people trying to help Israel… unlike the HAMAS supporters infesting your party of choice.
Here’s to your journey, OP:
Next year in Jerusalem. Mazel tov!
I know. It was a tongue in cheek joke based on the caption. Not sure why you infer that I am a democrat. Sorry you did not appreciate it.
Just a misunderstanding. Sorry about that.
Wonderful, wonderful article. Israel is one of the most vibrant countries, if not the best vibrant country in the world, bureaucracy and all.
