Progressives are not monolithic. It is not fair to tar them all with "far left." Many progressives believe in liberal democracy.

David, please name at least one among the progressive politicians we know. Thank you.

That’s nice. I’ll be more convinced when I see these progressives posting on social media and demonstrating in support of Israel (the only liberal democracy in the Middle East). I haven’t seen any of that. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, but these progressives have been so loud about other causes. Suddenly it seems they are so quiet.

There have been demonstrations in support of Israel, which I think are a mix of people on the right and left, though I am not sure there has been any conclusive reporting on the nature of these demonstrators. I would also say there is a strong isolationist tendency on part of the right that includes Israel in that view, but those people do not do demonstrations.

The moral pathway from identity politics - in which adherants claim such moral superioity - to a place where where they preach fealty to an organization that supports a hyper violent theocracy that tramples women's rights, gay rights, and rule of law in general is one that I will never be able to follow.

My university, from which I am suspended because of a "I stand with Israel" response to an out of country educator, is supporting an academic who openly loves Hamas, Houthis, dictators all around, and who both explicitedly and implicitedly hates the West and all its values. I'm not sure why he lives here, I suspect that he hopes one day that his efforts will lead to the distruction of Canada. And while his supporters flip from high minded liberal values to endorsing savagery, he plays the victim identity card with a rare skill in his manipulation of foolish administration as he leads them in their persecution of me. The irony floors me.

Wonderful article! Couldn't agree more that Biden is an apologist for the "woke" these days -- when it comes to Israel -- for strictly electoral reasons, silly as that may be. But here are the things I can't get past: 1) Re the useful idiots on campus, they don't seem to mind one whit that THEY THEMSELVES are currently reaping the benefits of New World colonialism big time. 2) As Bill Maher said back in October, "History hasn't been good to anybody." That made me think, because it's true of course. Multitudes of peoples have been colonized, massacred, discriminated against, enslaved, murdered, you name it (not only by white people, btw) -- and no one more than the Jews. BUT, what do we do? We pick ourselves up, dust off the proverbial debris, and move forward, spectacularly. We ALL must learn about the past, learn from the past, strive to be better and go into the future led by our best ideals (freedom / liberty / democracy / individualism), rather than flagellating ourselves over what we cannot change. That is just part of the newest useful idiot cult.

This echoes one of my points: "I dare you to find one Islamic extremist that votes for Donald Trump.” Why is Biden so worried about Muslims in Michigan? They're NOT going to vote for Trump.

Expand full comment

The issue is not if they will vote for the Trump-led Republicans. If it’s they will vote period. The democrats see a no-vote as a vote for the Republicans in Michigan.

Joshua, First off, I enjoyed watching your recent interview, & I have sons about your age, also from the SF Valley, who also went to school for Sports Journalism. Do you still have the right to vote here with dual-citizenship? I'm in a quandary as a Democrat disgusted with both Biden & Trump. Israel supersedes all other issues for me. A vote for Biden is unconscionable, and Trump is disgusting in every respect. Besides, Trump antagonizes allies, & "right about now," both the West & our diaspora can't afford to alienate any allies. Trump, also, has not post 10/7 come forward to say much about how he will protect and work with Israel. It seems there are no viable alternatives. From those of similar mind, I am most interested to hear what your election "game-plan" is.

Yes I can still vote in the U.S.! Agreed regarding the two likely candidates. It’s a lose-lose. Your guess is as good as mine about who will be better or worse for Israel. :(

Josh, I believe you're right that an extreme Islamist living in the West would vote Left since the common goal of both the Left and Islam is to destroy Western civilization. Which is why, decades ago, the Left helped the Islamists associated with the so-called Palestinian cause to write their propaganda playbook for the West. The Left understood what drives this propaganda: Sentimentality, which encourages people to be swayed by emotion instead of objective, verifiable facts. Universalism, which makes minorities with vastly different histories and issues seem like "brothers" - and anti-Semitism, that ancient, comfortable hatred etched into the DNA of too many in the Western world - ready to be called to action when a scapegoat is needed.

But I also wonder what will happen if, G-d forbid, the West IS destroyed. When Western countries no longer exist as sovereign nations but instead pledge allegiance to some New World Dystopia? Will that Dystopia be ruled by the Left or by Islam? It is inconceivable that these ideologies can peacefully co-exist since both seek sole world domination. And don't forget to factor in Russia and China. These players would never yield power to anyone. More likely the planet's political landscape will be carved into warring blocs. A cultural Marxist-style West for the Left, an Islamic Caliphate, a new Russian Empire and a new Empire of China. I leave it to you to speculate which countries will fall to which bloc.

And what about Israel? Will it be consumed by the Caliphate? Since I believe in Jewish prophesy I don’t see this happening. Kabbalah tells us a fascinating thing. It says that the souls of the generation who left Egypt will be reincarnated in our times, in the generation of the Final Redemption. I believe the Redemption is starting now. With the determination of the IDF. In the backrooms of Israeli defense technology experts. With the courage of the Israeli people. With the conviction of Jews and righteous gentiles the world over who are fighting the propagandists and the politicians of the Dark Side.

It's a hard fight. But we will win even if that Muslim guy in Minnesota votes for Biden. Am Yisroel Chai.

Thank you for writing this. It is absolutely accurate. It breaks my heart to see what is happening in my Country. I am totally appalled by it, I will always speak up for Israel and the Jewish people. However, I am embarrassed and ashamed of my Country at this time. Israel be strong!

Thanks for another terrific newsletter, Joshua. I wonder whether you can supply the source for your "44,000-plus terror attacks are committed in nearly 70 countries since 9/11 — exclusively by Islamic extremists.” Not that I doubt its veracity, but it is good to know the original source. I welcome, also, ideas on how we Americans living, and voting from, abroad, can do more than hold our nose as we vote for Biden. My relative who originally voted for Trump, then changed her mind after a few years, will probably hold her nose and vote for him again, just because she holds Israel dear. Israel, alas, has only one of dozens of terrible governments, at all levels. I despair for the world my grandchildren will inhabit.

WHY vote for Biden!? Yes, I agree with his other views, BUT Israel & the Jewish Diaspora have to be upheld above all other issues. A vote for Biden is a vote for Hamas,

I don't think there's any way to change Biden's Israel policy, and (forgive me), but it's foolish to chance voting for him on the off chance that he will actually support Israel. I am a Democrat who is absolutely NOT voting for Biden. Many mainstream & all Far-Left are promoting him for the reasons Israel/Jews supporting Israel, & the diaspora are living in fear. Lest you already forgot October 7th & its crystal clear implications, I pray you change your mind.

That’s kind of a divisive way to write to a person who has done everything in her power since October 7 to step up for Israel and for the Jewish community. I could ask you whether you have forgotten what Trump was like as President, but I care deeply about the unity of Jewry, so I try to respect and listen to other voices. I encourage you to do the same.

My comment in no way was an assertion or implication that I would EVER vote for Trump. I am disgusted with both candidates, & am hoping there is a miraculous alternative. Also, I don't doubt you also care deeply for Israel.

The Global Terrorism Database™ (GTD) is an open-source database including information on terrorist events around the world from 1970 through 2020 (with additional annual updates planned for the future). Unlike many other event databases, the GTD includes systematic data on domestic as well as transnational and international terrorist incidents that have occurred during this time period and now includes more than 200,000 cases. For each GTD incident, information is available on the date and location of the incident, the weapons used and nature of the target, the number of casualties, and--when identifiable--the group or individual responsible.

Statistical information contained in the Global Terrorism Database is based on reports from a variety of open media sources. Information is not added to the GTD unless and until we have determined the sources are credible. Users should not infer any additional actions or results beyond what is presented in a GTD entry and specifically, users should not infer an individual associated with a particular incident was tried and convicted of terrorism or any other criminal offense. If new documentation about an event becomes available, an entry may be modified, as necessary and appropriate.

The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) makes the GTD available via this online interface in an effort to increase understanding of terrorist violence so that it can be more readily studied and defeated.

Characteristics of the GTD

Contains information on over 200,000 terrorist attacks

Currently the most comprehensive unclassified database on terrorist attacks in the world

Includes information on more than 88,000 bombings, 19,000 assassinations, and 11,000 kidnappings since 1970

Includes information on at least 45 variables for each case, with more recent incidents including information on more than 120 variables

More than 4,000,000 news articles and 25,000 news sources were reviewed to collect incident data from 1998 to 2017 alone

Terrorism and The Realpolitik in The Middle East.

The Jihadist Core which lies at the Heart and Centre of all Nationalist Arab Political movements in The Middle East means that any Palestinian State would absolutely and certainly become Islamist, and then re-form Terrorist Militas within months of any Palestinian State being agreed. Israel would then be attacked all over again in the future.

No Arab State in The Middle East is a Democracy. All of them actively support Jihadist and Islamist Terrorist Militias, including support for Hamas. Egypt is a One Party State, and supports Terror Militias. The State of Saudi Arabia actively set up both the Sunni Islamic State Terrorist Militias and Daish / ISIS. Qatar hosts and supports Hamas. Assad in Syria has killed 450,000 there in a vicious Civil War. All the rest are one-party states.

This is how we know exactly the same will happen in The Palestinian Territories, and why there can be no Palestinian State, after October 7th 2023.

This is Realpolitik in The Middle East. Get used to it.

I find that Trump, when he speaks, exaggerates a lot. He speaks in superlatives oftentimes.

I can’t hear him speak. It turns me inside out. But he will not change. He is who he is. Somehow he managed to do many things right. Amazingly, his policies were right except for COVID, which is understandable. He didn’t have much of a choice with Fauci and the rest of the govt piled on him. That’s the biggest controversy Trump poses for this election: he disgusts many as a person but they can’t help accepting that he had right policies and was right about many things.

Very true, Josh. But this is what is driving his base. His Barnum and Bailey style created a movement, which is no small thing. His actual policies and accomplishments tell a positive story in my opinion and there was no Oct 7 under his watch (1) because he denied money to Iran and the Palestinians and (2) helped the US become a leading oil/gas exporter which reduced the oil/gas income of Russia and Middle East exporters. Trump knows that you need money to make war. He denied our enemies that income and instead held out another income "carrot" to Middle Eastern countries to promote peace between them and Israel in the form of the Abraham Accords. I learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover or a politician by his speaking style.

The Extremists (Right, Left and Islamist ) are using The West's Freedom to speak without fear, against The West itself. Lenin himself said that give a Capitalist enough rope and he will hang himself. The radical Islamists are simply copying this for themselves. But The West is not going to go down so easily. For a start, the Achilles Heal of the Left and the Islamists who copy them, is what is REALLY behind all anti-Western Ideology, namely their JEALOUSY of the very high standards of living and Freedom we enjoy in Europe, America and White Australasia. Religious Islam and Communism does not even come close. Even China is rich, but not free. Yes, the goal of the far Left is to end the West. This is also true of the (Accelerationist) Neo-Nazis, and the Islamists. Jealousy is the motive. To show this is to Win!

“I get it, though, many Muslims are peaceful, law-abiding, society-contributing, non-proselytizing, West-appreciating folks. But there is a second side to this coin: Many are not.”

That obligatory disclaimer is not true and is a poor attempt to avoid the cries of “Islamophobia “ There are no Reform Muslims. There are Muslims and non-Muslims but if you are speaking to a Muslim there is no second side to this coin. And if there are one or two “peaceful live and let live Muslims” they get killed by their peace loving co-political religious colleagues. It’s ok to acknowledge that there is a group - a rather large group - that wants to kill EVERYONE who is not them. And they are taking over the world. Remember they almost got to Europe in the Middle Ages. Now? They’ve already done that. The description of why they align themselves with the looney left is perfect. And they are destroying the world. They’ve got nothing but time and useful idiots. So don’t apologize for noticing.

One more comment: my neighbor is a sort of non-practicing Muslim educated in the US, very progressive, a shrink by trade. He’s from Iran. You know what the door code is for getting into his house when he asks me to feed his cats? 1979. I didn’t ask why but he proudly told me that this was the date of the Iranian Revolution. Remember? When the Iranians held American hostages when Jimmy Carter was President and didn’t release them until Ronald Reagan was inaugurated? You think in his heart of hearts this neighbor of mine - on the surface a pretty nice fella - holds anything but actual contempt for non-Muslims even though he does “practice”?
