Despite everything that drives me away from Republicans, there is more that’s drawing me toward them as a Jewish American and dual U.S.-Israeli citizen in 2024.
My family voted Democratic for decades - until things started to change pretty dramatically before Obama. When Biden was elected my Dentist, who is Polish Catholic and was raised in a quite Jewish neighborhood, asked me point blank - Don’t your people understand that Democrats hate you? He had seen and felt the change during Obama’s administration, not just towards Israel and Jews, but towards the underlying values which have served as ballast and strength to this amazing United States of America.
Liberal anti-Semitism was around for decades before Obama. I saw it in Canada when our liberal prime ministers either voted against Israel in UN resolutions or, more commonly, abstained. But like the Jewish American who was brainwashed to vote Democrat, most Jewish Canadians were clueless and voted liberal because their community leaders told them to. This election will be different in Canada. We have a conservative opponent, Pierre Poilievre, who is a sincere ally of Israel - despite the fact that Muslims outnumber us here by at least 20 to one!
Israel support among Democrat leadership is becoming a rarity: Sen John Fetterman (PA), Rep Ritchie Torres(NY), Andrew Cuomo, RFK Jr.
But among prominent Democrats, the tide turned shortly after Oct 7. Within weeks Elizabeth Warren (MA) was calling for immediate ceasefire and de-escalation. Many other Democratic leaders continue to keep silent about Oct 7 atrocities, rapes, child abductions. The Biden administration started with full support for Israel but then started to waver, witness the 3 stage ceasefire plan that makes no mention of removing Hamas from power.
Trump's support for Israel is measured in deeds, not words: recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Abraham Accords, suspension of funding for PA and UNRWA.
The lawsuits against universities that condone antisemitism are possible because of Trump's 2019 Executive Order that made antisemitism a Title VI civil rights violation.
Republican support for Israel is rooted in a strong Evangelical base, like Christians United for Israel (10M members, cufi.org).
Not too mention Republican support for free speech and race-free merit based admissions and promotions.
Not voting for Trump reduces to voting for Harris. A telltale sign is how she refused Josh Shapiro as running mate despite his tremendous appeal in the key state of Pennsylvania. That wasn't enough to overcome the fact that Shapiro is Jewish: how much support for Israel do you expect from that mentality?
Right-leaning folks are generally really turned off by terrorism. They don’t buy the oppressor/oppressed narrative. Even non-religious right wingers fit this profile.
PS nothing illustrates Democrats/Progressives better than their reporting on Trump's Executive Order that made antisemitism a Title VI civil rights violation
Smart thinking, Josh. Voting for Trump is the only choice if you are a Jewish American who wants to retain your civil rights and improve the relationship between Israel and the US. Although it's clear that anti-Semitism is coming mostly from the Left these days, we should still be vigilant about Republicans who mouth off in back rooms and/or on social media about Israel being a US "charity case" and a burden on the American taxpayer. These bozos might not sympathize with Hamas but they haven't a clue about how the US benefits from the Israel/US alliance. Why not make this a topic for one of your pre-election articles?? Although it won't make any anti-Semite love us, it could arm your readers with some talking points to reassure American goyim that a US alliance with Israel is more than just about honoring the place where Jesus was born and catering to those "rich Jewish campaign donors".
Very well thought out and reasonably argued. But let’s cut through the crap. The Democratic Party is no friend of Israel and no friend of the Jews. They are a band of ideologues in full retreat from the values of western civilization that have protected the rights and bodily integrity of Jews since the end of WWII. If American Jews continue to pledge their allegiance, they will have no one to blame but themselves when the railroad freight cars packed with Jews begin to roll to the camps. There is a deep, passionate strain of antisemitism embedded in the Democratic Party that Jews will ignore or rationalize at their peril. Get your heads out of your ass. The Democrats are not your friends.
President Obama stated in 2007 that "We are 5 days away from FUNDEMENTALLY transforming the United States". He was not only referring to our nation, but also the democrat party. This has resulted in a party moving away from compassion, to one that embraces power and growth of government at all cost. In the last 12 years, we have witnessed an aggressive push away from democratic principles to embracing Marxist principles in the democrat party. The major powers in the Democrat party view Israel as a threat to their power hungry pursuits. While the democrats are endorsing an admitted marxist (Harris) and communist (Walz), the republican party has ex-democrats (Trump, RFK Jr, Musk, Tulsa Gabbard) pursuing a return to democratic principles (freedom of speech, religious freedom, individual prosperity, and support of western values). I cannot understand how any American Jew can support the current democrat party. That support seems antithetical to biblical wisdom. God has a plan and will sort it out in the end.
In this case, I’m happy to be Canadian because it will be easier to vote for Polievre, my first time ever voting Conservative, than it would be to vote for Trump, an acknowledged rapist.
I wrote an article recently about the Middle Eastern advisors to Obama and now Harris. They uniformly believe that wars in the middle east are unwinnable, and will strongly discourage any American involvement. Despite the great failure of Obama’s policy to empower Iran as a way of seeking peace, these advisors are still employing that same strategy. Some are naïve (Philip Gordon) and some may be Iranian operatives, like Robert Malley and Ariana Tabatabai. Others are just relentlessly anti-Zionist like Maher Bitar who was a board member of SJP while at Georgetown University.
None of them are to be trusted.
I think the United States has supported Israel because it is the sole democracy in the Middle East, therefore a more reliable partner. It was seen as a bulwark against Soviet and now Russian influence. As the Gulf states become American allies, Israel may be less valued. I don’t think votes or money matter when we are a tiny percentage of the population.
As the Walls go up around Europe to protect The West, Israel is and will be the only ally who will prevent and police the massive and rising levels of Islamism in The Middle East. She has proved herself in the last seventy years doing just this. Now the next Era is upon us.
Joshua, i think you know from my previous comments how I feel about this election and its importance to Jews and Israel. Because of this, I have been angered and extremely disappointed that none of the large Jewish organization have had the balls to endorse someone. I even challenged the writers here on FOJ to take a stance. Somehow the lack of endorsement just turns me off completely cuz just like the politicians the cowards in opinion journalism are afraid of losing their votes aka readership.
I agree with every word you said in your article and admire your guts in standing up and placing our people and Israel first and foremost in your decision to go public. It always brings much personal satisfaction to come out of the closet. You may have influenced someone who has been sitting on the fence and what could possible be more important.
We Jews have always been pawns in diaspora politics, its on both sides of the aisle, and both sides use the very same toxic anti Jewish tropes, on that both sides agree, just like they did when AH (yemach shemo) met the grand mufti of Jerusalem.
Some of the worst antisemities served under FDR. Sec of State Cordell Hull comes to mind... his hatred of Jews resulted in dire consequences for Jews (several of my uncles and aunts) attempting to flee Europe and enter the USA under quota visas. On the 2 candidates now - Is this the best America has to offer? Stay in Israel, you are better off. Chag Sameach.
It appears to this outsider if the USA citizens, including Jewish voters do not get their vote right, Israel may not survive for many years. Please follow Josh's advice.
I get that impression too. The Obama-Biden policy on Iran has inflamed the Middle East. The Ayatollahs are fanatical Jew-hating Muslims. (I’m also an outsider.)
If you are quiet, you can hear the sound of former democrats jumping off the bus. The bait and switch of the dem was a shanda. As if no one could notice the cognitive decline two years ago. The dem. candidate is not strong and not trustworthy. The republican one lies. Three weeks out.
Josh you got to believe people when they say things. Think of Hamass Charter. National Socialist German Workers Party NSDAP. Read em and weep NAZI party was socialist therefore though led by a fascist still lefty.
I’ve no doubt leftist cultural dominance in the west has led to populist movements that often endorse poor representatives. Nikki Haley was steamrolled bc Trump has a cult following of people who feel browbeaten. There’s a lot of incoherence in the right populist movement owing to righteous anger that’s often misdirected. Losing my sanity watching Trump abandon Republican principles (tariffs aren’t one but at least he’s consistent there and rightly pointed out democrats never got rid of them) to see how many votes he can buy. We are a highly progressive system to the point of disincentive but that’s not enough. The government seems bent on debt levels that can only end in pretty substantial inflation. To buy votes. The problem is western elites were corrupt for decades. Now we are at a point where a rape crisis center in Scotland can’t define woman, student debt should be wiped out but not any other debt, no one should abide the immigration laws bc you can just use an app and click asylum, we should uselessly stick it to lower class people who can’t afford the green fantasies of those with multiple homes, every field should be staffed by an exact representation of minorities reflected in the population but of course no one suggests this for say pro basketball or elementary school teachers, constant omissions, decontextualizing, double standards, and fake news and faker fact checking by mainstream media. This is circa the elites. The only positive things I can say about Kamala Harris and they are the only ones is she’s relatively young and in good shape and is not attuned to her own laugh so bless her there. I don’t know what type of person Doug Emhoff is but he was credibly accused of domestic violence and had an affair with his nanny in addition to the fact that he tweeted Jews hid during the Hanukkah story which is a strange inversion likely reflecting a worldview we don’t need. If Melania had this background it would be big news all the time. I don’t like the dirt digging but I’m not sure what it is I’m supposed to admire about Emhoff except that it would be kind of cool to have a First Gentleman. Trump is a poor example of the principles of republicans. Vance did a few bad 180s imo. Trump is backpedaling on positive things he did for the economy. He doesn’t even seem to know his own virtues which get swallowed by his ego and rambling tirades. He would throw the party under the bus over his ego. That said, I probably won’t vote for my dog. I think many Jewish people have a self centered virtue signaling need that’s reflected politically. There I said it jump on me. It’s my opinion. Of course it’s not just Jewish people but there tends to be an inflated sense of justice in the community that isn’t as introspective and inspecting as it should be. They forgot the Talmudic part. Republicans are depicted in an immature caricaturish way that’s often pretty offensive. Coalitions shift. No one owns anyone’s vote. I’m not a never trumper I understand his appeal I think he’s too bizarrely egoistic to be fit for president (and whatever I think of Trump it goes just as well for his competitors if not more but who are to their credit better comprehending of the big picture when under assault than Trump is. He wants his bitterness and cult even if it costs republicans the Congress. Democrats want to cement power. They act as more of a blob spitting out centrists at this point). I envy the Kamala and trump gushers bc they are feeling it. I’m not feeling any of it.
As a gay Jew who also cares about women’s health there is no way I will vote for someone who has promised to outlaw abortion. Two women have already died because of Trump’s Supreme Court nominations that overturned Roe v Wade. I’m not willing to sacrifice women who have been raped or become pregnant through incest it is already estimated that they’re about 26,000 women in Texas under this condition Women have had to
bleed out because doctors refused to treat them because of anti-abortion laws. This Supreme Court has also hinted that they are willing to overturn gay marriage and gay rights under religious pretenses the worst massacre of Jews since the holocaust occurred under Netanyahu He has never met a right wing fascist or authoritarian in Europe and he doesn’t admire. So as much as I might disagree with the Democrats policies regarding Israel, I’m also wanting to save democracy so we could fight those fights another day.
Abortion was not outlawed by changing it from federal law to the states. It puts it in the hands of each state’s voters per the Constitution. Trump’s personal position, publicly declared many times, is victims of rape and incest should be exempt from any abortion law and is opposed to ‘late term abortion’ (infanticide).
My own POV is outside the box of any current plan and entails educated choice between a woman and physician pro and con with support for all decisions. It will be a great day when consciousness is raised and solutions make pregnancy not a problem. Probably not in my lifetime.
Plus. I find it fascinating that all these Jewish Trump voters who love write about Israel being the only democracy in the Middle East are willing to end democracy here by voting for Trump who in his own words has vowed to implement fascist policies here in the USA. Plus he is a convicted rapist, felon, has the support of and has literal Nazis dine and speak at Mar a logo. He can no longer operate charities in New York State because he has ripped off veterans and children with cancer. Etc. Not sure what Jewish values he stands for.
It is less about Trump and far more about the Democrats taking Jews and Israel for granted. Should the Republicans win and not deliver in reasserting Jewish safety and an uncompromising relationship with Israel, the Democrats will have another opportunity to regain our trust. That is the entire point of this essay, very little to do with Trump.
'The Democrats will have another opportunity to regain our trust' .Are you sure there will be 'business as usual' ? You should pay attention to what happened to Hungary under Victor Orban, Josh.

Apparently Hungary is a pretty good place to be Jewish now. Much better than countries with big Muslim populations, like France.
I loathe Trump. I'm not sure Israel (not to mention the Western World order) will survive four years of Harris and the radical Democrats.
