Many feel they must choose between their interests as Jews and their interests as citizens. These used to be aligned, but have now diverged — as the West’s commitment to liberal decency has declined.
Guess what, I hate to break it to you but the West's commitment to " liberal decency" has been as much of a hoax as " palestine" and the "palestinian people "
I'm Canadian - and the author's description of the situation here is spot on. We Canadian Jews have one hope: the Conservative Party opposition leader Pierre Poilievre who came out strongly pro-Israel and has been wooing Canadian Jews at various events. (Search him on YouTube for some of his speeches at Canadian synagogues.) Poilievre stands a good chance of beating the far-left, anti-Semitic Trudeau at the next federal election because of his stand on other issues and, to date, doesn't seem overly concerned about offending the huge bloc of Canadian Muslims who vastly outnumber Canadian Jews. Time will tell....
The current wave of antisemitism is the result of mixing democracy with large scale Muslim immigration. Even the most sublime democratic regime, but in Pakistan for example, would have the same result.
Fortunately the values held by radicalized Muslim immigrants are not only antisemitic but also anti-Western. They offend a large majority of the population; for example a recent survey by Ipsos found 58% of independent US voters oppose the campus pro-Hamas rallies.
This naturally aligns Jewish voters with the majority of Western voters and no dilemma arises.
I will soon have the privilege to vote for President Trump for the third time and to, once again, wish him the best.
After reading this excellent essay it had me thinking that countries who have been the real colonizers like the US, France, England, etc. are cleansing their conscience for all the sins they have committed and are projecting their guilt on Israel. I'm perplexed what they would have done had Jews not existed. How convenient for them that we do.
We have to work with non-Jews to help them see our fight is theirs too. Many already agree but they haven't been hit over the head yet with stuff that affects them personally so they stay quiet. A good way to get them to join the fight is to point out that the same Islamo/Leftist "woke" dogma that hates Jews also hates white, heterosexual men. (Woke dogma considers them "oppressors".) They are losing job opportunities, advancements, etc. to less qualified people from the so-called "oppressed" groups, e.g. people of color and LGBT through racist DEI policies in workplaces. (I spoke with a white bus driver about this and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He's very upset about it.) Also hated by this alliance are practicing Christians. Leftists denounce most religions - including Christianity since they represent a threat to state authority (which is what leftists/Marxists want). And Islam hates Christianity almost as much as it hates Jews. Christians are persecuted in most Islamic states. Many Christians are on Israel's side; just be careful not to get involved with the ones wanting to convert Jews!
The Jews are not the only ones with this dilemma, thought it can be far more hate-full for them. I also look for democracy and see none. Unlike the American Jew, I have nowhere to retreat to.
Then I suggest you become an activist to promote your country's democratic values and politicians who will best fight for them. Israel is fighting for her existence but so are the Western democracies. In this war against the global Islamo/Leftist alliance (a.k.a. Red/Green Alliance) there are no civilians anymore. We must all be soldiers in some fashion.
What war exists within islam between "moderates" and islamists? There are no moderates in islam or there are so few of them as to be insignificant and powerless. They almost universally agree on spreading jihad and a global caliphate.
I hate Canada, the UK and France. Yes, Jews should flee those dying nations ASAP. It's said that the first sign of a decaying civilization starts with antisemitism. I think at the moment it's still relatively safe in America. At least we have the GOP who remain solid supporters of Israel and are philosemitic. There is no similar base of support for Jews and Israel in any other western country
Occasionally one hears about so-called "reformed" Muslims who cherry-pick the Qu'ran to remove its hate towards Jews and others and its call for worldwide Jihad. But I haven't heard much from them in recent years and I'm speculating it's because they fear for their lives. It's common for political Islamist clergy to issue "fatwas" (death contracts) against Muslims and others who oppose them loudly in the public sphere.
You write this whole article without mentioning the one that might very likely have prevented all of this had he had a second term and who backed Israel without reservation. I guess you don't listen to Trump's speeches where he clearly states support for Israel to finish their war, destroy Hamas and his abhorrence of the antisemitism on campuses. He would never have released the billions to Iran that played a role in starting all of this. It was a huge domino effect led by the Biden administration in Obama's footsteps and who are playing both sides. While I don't think he's perfect, he is definitely the right choice for the Jews in this U.S. election. It's too bad most of my fellow Jews spend their time worrying about their right to kill the unborn and wanting to give up their second amendment rights to defend themselves.
We'll see, some I never expected have changed their minds and others are . . . quiet. I think they won't say it aloud yet, or maybe even admit it to themselves, but when the ballot's in front of them, they'll have to make the decision.
We're working on the ones closest to us. They are so news siloed that they just don't see the information we see so we need to go out of our way to share it with them. I hope many change their minds. I've seen it happen. I've also see the crazy self-hating and "Israel - embarrassed" Jews and that is very sad.
The self-hating/Israel-embarrassed ones are emotionally damaged, in my opinion. To hate one's own people suggests personal experiences (or an interpretation of those experiences) that won't be changed by facts. Tragically, some of these damaged people become rich and powerful - like this guy Finer who advises Biden, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders and of course, George Soros.
Nachum, I just learned of a survey of what Canadians think of the university encampments. Apparently 48% oppose them (mostly older people), 31% support them (mostly younger people) and 21% don't know. Clearly, the Canadian Jewish community must focus on the younger people in our efforts to stop anti-Semitism and on educating the general public, too. Our biggest challenge is with politicians and police who think diplomacy towards Hamas supporters is more important than eliminating hate speech and violence. Also, our laws need tightening in certain areas e.g. trespass. The mainstream media is an ongoing problem in Canada. It's obviously left-leaning and this includes anti-Israel bias. However, there is a nonprofit called Honest Reporting Canada which is making headway against the media bias. Here's a link to the Canadian survey: https://thehub.ca/2024-05-14/nearly-half-of-canadians-oppose-pro-palestine-encampments/#:~:text=Nearly%20half%20(48%20percent)%20of,less%20than%20ten%20Canadian%20universities
Here in America, the choice is Chrystal clear, vote Trump. He's the only potential western head of state who has taken a clear and fearless stance in support of Israel. Other Republicans have also done so, but they aren't going to be president.
So help save it. Do an in depth review of the pros and cons of Trump. Write whatever is the truth. Be as objective as you can. People need to understand that if you get most of what you want, it’s a win. It’s not going to be perfect.
Joe Biden has always been stupid and an amoral opportunist who along with the left wing of the Democrats and his not so secret puppet master ,has sold out every Dem constituency besides terrorists and transsexuals. What is the objection to Trump for Jews? Hysterical lies published in the NYT?
I agree with your conclusion, but the only country in the West where Jews still have some chance to rectify a bad situation is in America. The rest of the leading powers in the West are too far gone.
Trump 2024
Look at the policies, not the tweets. If you’re too blind to see it, I can’t help you.
I wish an Israeli passport were the solution. Is Israel prepared to absorb the millions of immigrants from the US — or maybe at some point refugees? As it stands, it’s not as easy as it looks to get an Israeli passport. The Law of Return looks good on paper. In practice, there are plenty of ways a state bureaucracy can find ways to turn an applicant down. It’s one thing to promise safety in the law. It’s another thing to have the economic resources to put it into practice.
Guess what, I hate to break it to you but the West's commitment to " liberal decency" has been as much of a hoax as " palestine" and the "palestinian people "

I hope for Canada it will be a beneficial outcome for the Jewish community. Trudeau has to go.

We have always been the world's favorite scapegoat.
Yes, we have, but it's become extremely dangerous until these Western countries wake up from their stupor.
We have to work with non-Jews to help them see our fight is theirs too. Many already agree but they haven't been hit over the head yet with stuff that affects them personally so they stay quiet. And maybe paraphrase the words of British Prime Minister William Pitt about the Napoleonic Wars:
"England has saved itself by its exertions, and Europe by its example "
Never a better fit than today with Israel's war against Hamas.

Agree. Add Norman Finklestein to that list as well.
Bravo. Well said!

I agree fully that the US is the Western country that is the most saveable.

Don t you have to do allya to have an israeli passeport
Problem is that jews that live in any other country thinks that all there beligings
Are safe where ever they are.
Like All the jews that left all arabic countries left everything there, and came out with nothing.
My parents are one of them.
They had to work hard to make a new life
Elsewhere.
So i suggest poeple that have homes money, should not have all in the same bucket
To buy israeli bond and have a (pied a terre) in israe .
Of course if they can do it.
In case of any problem this is not easy to start over, it takes a lot of years to redow all.
When you see that in swizerland they beated jewish kids by 2by 4 plank of wood,
It gives you to think.
Please go and check that the rage t”of how they beated those jewish kids and police standing there doing nothing.
We do not do that even after oct 7
We did not protest we did not go to there schools and beat them.
