Feeding the enemy, trading hostages for terrorists, and extending the war under the banner of morality are not acts of ethics; they are acts of madness.
This is a painful subject. I agree with you that Hamas will never release the remaining hostages. It is the last chance saloon for Hamas and they will never hand them over. During the abysmal ISIS period Britain lost many hostages, however the government policy was never negotiate with terrorists. They believed this would encourage them to take more hostages.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 A standing ovation for a tremendous article that should be run in every newspaper in Israel and read by every Israeli and Jew around the world, Mr. Goldberg! You said it all here! Every single word was on point! No more negotiations, no more humanitarian aid, no more deals, no more waffling and indecisiveness. Israel needs to be in it to win it 100%! Hamas must be 100% destroyed! The hostages are important for sure but winning the war and wiping the demons in Hamas off the face of the Earth must come first. Henry Kissinger was right in the 1980s in his council to Yitzhak Rabin. This war needs to be finished quickly and with devastating force. No more pussyfooting around! It also needs to a decisive victory and Hamas must like the Third Reich before them, never rise again.
I was fascinated by the invaluable history you provided of how authoritarian regimes and terrorists use the UN and hijack humanitarian missions, to their own advantage and at the expense of civilians. It doesn’t surprise me at all. The United Nations is incredibly corrupt and inept. They have fallen for every single Hamas lie hook, line and sinker. Most of the aid they’ve sent to the people of Gaza got stolen by Hamas, organized crime families and bands of thieves. This is why the United States and Israel established the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation which has been such an improvement and has fed millions of people. The GHF has been so much more efficient and effective than the UN and NGOs ever were.
Israel is absolutely under NO obligation to give food, water and fuel to Gaza! None whatsoever! In fact when they did it, the world still gave them the finger and Hamas stole most of it and sold it back to people on the black market for ridiculous prices or kept it for themselves. What a surprise! This is why Israel is not doing this anymore. Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu need to wise up and see that no peace deal will ever work or accomplish diddly squat. Hamas will break it as they did the ceasefire and the war will start back up again. We all want to see the hostages come back home safe and sound. But not at any price. If you’re willing to pay any price for the hostages, Hamas and their allies will exploit that and seek to raise the prize the next time they take hostages and it will embolden them furthermore, to keep doing just that because it can make them rich. You are sending the message that all they have to do is kidnap an Israelis and you’ll give them anything their heart desires.
They’ll never stop squeezing you for every penny you’ve got. There is no rationalizing or cutting deals with these demons. Hamas are monsters with out any heart, any soul or any inner moral compass to guide them. You can’t reason with them. Let us not forget what these men did on October 7th. They invaded Southern Israel and took pot shots at random drivers on the highway, savagely murdered foreign workers, burned babies alive, beheaded people, brutally raped and gang raped young women, kidnapped hundreds of innocent people, sprayed playgrounds with bullets, slaughtered IDF soldiers, ransacked, looted and burned Kibbutzims, and massacred Jews in Tsarist Russia style pogroms. You really think you can just talk it out with them? You think they’ll keep their word to you? Don’t be daft! Hamas want nothing less than the destruction of Israel and the annihilation of the Jewish people. They then want to take over the world and build a global caliphate.
Trump and Bibi need to wake up and realize they’ve got to fight this war to the bitter end and achieve total victory over the Fourth Reich. Hamas is on its last legs at this point. They’ve lost control of 80% of Gaza, are having a hard time paying their fighters, most of their leadership is dead, their running out of food and ammunition, and the IDF is hot on their tail.
You don’t win a war by feeding your enemy and engaging in hostage negotiations You destroy the enemy militarily and destroy the willpower of a very supportive civilian population where there are no Schindlers and no righteous gentiles to support that enemy via siege warfare
With shoving and starving Palestinians around, you don't win a war.
If the idea of mr. Nethanyahu's right-wing coalition is to prepare the Gazanians for a transfer to elsewhere / anywhere, by now he should show his cards. Probably, he has none.
At present, he is only causing misery and prolonged suffering all over the place.
Mr. Goldberg is right: wars should be ended swift and mercilessly.
The only way to do that is to conquer the Hamas tunnels, that's were the monsters dwell.
But according to the 'Jeruzalem Post': "The IDF has only destroyed about a quarter of Hamas’s tunnels in Gaza, security sources said on Wednesday"( april '25.)
Mr. Nethanyahu is leading this war poorly and is causing enormous damage to Israel's standing in the world by his cruel foot-dragging.
I have been a voice for Israel in spaces where that is unpopular, if not unwelcome. I ended my brief #DemExit and returned from the Green Party because of Green Anti-Zionism. My dissent against the BDS campaign ended almost four decades of membership in the Democratic Socialists of America and inspired me to step back from the National Lawyers Guild.
Like many progressive Jews, the anti-Zionism of the left tends to make me reassert my Zionism rather than selling out on my Jewish identity.
Just the other day an organizer from the Working Families Party hung up on me when the fur started flying about the meaning of Zionism, because that organizer, and so many others, conflate indiscriminate murder and matter-of-fact human rights abuses as the nature of Jewish political self-determination in our physical and spiritual birthplace.
Yet, here we are... justifying indiscriminate murder and matter-of-fact human rights abuses as a matter of self-defense.
I appreciate the arguments about Israel existing in a tough neighborhood and our toughness being forced upon us in the struggle, but then there is the matter of simply giving zero f*cks or blaming Hamas for Jews shrugging shoulders about children starving.
After all the unpopularity I endured for maintaining my Zionism and Judaism, I'm supposed to sell out that identity to this shonda?
All the ingenuity of our people and we can't come up with something better than this?
Allow me to speak pure Chicago for a moment: Are you f*cking kidding me?
Here's some free fracking clues for the lunatic dumb azzh*les running Israel right now.
First off, it doesn't matter how much I love my imaginary ideal of Israel or how much I go along with your stupid cruel bullshit, Bibi's national security circus let our enemies overrun Israel and run wild on his watch.
Why is the Prime Minister of October 7 still leading this parade to nowhere?
How is Hamas controlling anything at this point? As a student of US failures in Vietnam and Afghanistan I'm reading the tea leaves and seeing something very familiar...wasted time, wasted money, pointless cruelty, and lives wasted just for the sake of killing people and considering it a means to an end.
High five for taking out some leadership in Iran and Hezb'llah, but step two was asking the US to jump in and finish the job? Did I miss something or was that what just happened?
Bibi looked at Trump and saw a viable leader for a real strategic goal like getting Hezb'llah/Iran the hell out of Lebanon? Wow. I'm not seeing the plan. I'm not seeing the road to victory. Someone break it down for me.
If we are re-enacting what the Romans did to us 1800 years ago, I should point out that there aren't a lot of Romans running around there anymore. I think they're mostly gone and the people that were completely beat down are running the place... maybe with the same kind of righteousness we had when we thought we could take on the Romans.
That WFP organizer asked me if I believed in Christians, Muslims, and Jews living side-by-side in peace with each other. When I said, yes, that's my goal, he said, "You're not really a Zionist then."
I asked him if he was a Jew. He said he was agnostic. I then told him he was Jewsplaining to me what is Zionism. I told him for most Jews, it was liberation, self-determination... that he was conflating a crazy rightwing version of Zionism with all of Zionism.
Could it be he was correct and I was wrong?
I wouldn't wish starvation upon my worst enemy. Does that disqualify me as a supporter of Israel?
Jews and Jews alone ought to define Zionism. Right now we're doing a lousy job of that.
Maybe ditch Bibi, and come up with better Zionism. To be a nation among nations. Retreating into fortress didn't work against the Romans. It wasn't a long-term solution in the ghettos, either.
Hi Bob - thank you once again for another well-articulated article.
You may be interested in the video series entitled Enduring Peace released by Chabad outlining the Rebbe's approach to war and peace as it applies to the current set of conflicts.
It is hosted by the Executive Director of JEM and provides a principled approach rooted in Torah and eternal values for how the Jewish nation should approach war to achieve real and enduring peace.
Confected Moral outrage of the Jew-baiters leading the media Orchestra. Behind them are the Nazi Elements in The State here in Europe. And all Hamas actually has to do is release the Hostages and disarm and leave Gaza.
Right, everyone against you is a Nazi, including the liberal opposition parties in Israel. Get real and get out of your echo chamber! I’ll do my part unless I’m cowardly banned.
Actual Nazis are Nazis though...like the so called "liberals" in Europe and America who cover for terrorism and maybe...you? Or are you a capo? No, capos were under duress so you're just...a dumbass. Nazis were far-right and far-left, just like today. National Socialists...
I am talking about the Core Elites here in Europe. We have monitored how State elements have Re-formed The Nazi Party. All of this is now monitored and verified here in London. And they are in Alliance with Hamas which is in the record too. Liberalism is viewed as fatal weakness in The Middle East, and despised by the Nazis in power near the Core. Don’t become another Useful Idiot, SM. Believe me I wish this was otherwise, SM. Don’t shoot the messenger.
This article doesn’t explain at any point what “winning” means, only that it will involve death of Palestinian civilians, which evidently it approves of. It also approves of the death of the
Hostages in service of the mirage of total victory. Hey Bob, why don’t you support a coalition of Arab States and the Palestinian authority governing Gaza if you want Hamas out. It’s pretty horrifying what the Zionist right has become. And also, maybe don’t talk admiringly about apartheid South Africa in your first paragraph?
Excellent exposition Bob, and I couldn’t agree more. I’m an American Gentile, so one could say that I ‘have no skin (or blood) in the affairs of Israelis’. But I do have a deep love for the Chosen People and for Israel. And I have ‘a heart of flesh’ and a good enough imagination to empathize with the family members of the hostages, as well as the family members of IDF soldiers, whether or not they have been wounded or died. In fact, I have dearly loved Israeli Jewish friends who serve in various combat units and I am well aware of the suffering of the family members at home.
But, your argument is indeed the moral, righteous one - particularly at this point, with an American Administration that, for the time being, is truly supportive and will follow through with necessary material and financial resources.
Israel was severely constrained by the duplicity of the prior Administration, which actively worked with Leftist Israeli NGOs (and, no doubt, others from ‘inside the wire’) to bring down the government and stop the war.
But that is history now.
Now, Israel needs to get this done and over with as quickly as possible; to throughly and decisively defeat Hamas.
I believe Netanyahu has previously put forward a proposal to establish secure camps for the civilian population, and force, if necessary, relocation of the civilians from areas of combat. If my understanding is correct, I believe the IDF leadership was against that proposal, but it seems a prerequisite to ‘finish the job’, in a way that is consistent with the high morals of the IDF, and the minimum collateral injuries or deaths.
Some would adamantly object, on the assumption that clearing out the civilians and going all-in with overwhelming military force would be a death sentence for any remaining hostages. There is no doubt that it would increase the risks of their injury or death, at least compared with doing more of the same as we have seen.
But, paradoxically, it might just as well be the pivotal means of preserving their lives, and freeing them earlier than anything else. Why? Because, at the very end, Hamas leaders would want safe passage to some third country, and the only negotiating chip they would have would be living hostages.
May the Lord continue to bless, save, guide, and protect Israel. May He give wisdom, courage, and protection to her leaders in every sphere. May He continue to restrain, expose, and thwart Israel’s many enemies, from within and without, and give her warriors strength of body, mind, and spirit, as well as protection and victory in battle. I pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and for these blessings upon all Israel, in the name of Yeshua, whom I love and serve.
There’s no such thing as “moral war.” War is one of the curses from the Garden-represented by one of the four horses of the Apocalypse in The Revelation of John. Hamas started a war. All parties in a war suffer. The most humane thing is to make a swift end of it and one side wins decisively.
Not an authority but agree 100%. Israel must press ahead, ignoring the negative voices telling her what to do. Most voices have zero concern for the State of Israel except as a punching bag.
Wow ... a punch to the gut that needed to be delivered.
In the Washington Post's latest hit piece, there's a statement that belies the truthfulness of the entire article that apparently the WP editors missed. In the version I read, in a paragraph beginning with "WhatsApp..." it's stated that the father of newborns couldn't afford the food necessary to sustain the children. Well ... who sells food in Gaza? Israel certainly doesn't. Proof positive from their own mouths. Unfortunately, the Philly Inquirer chose to silence me when I called out the deceitful narrative in a Letter to the Editor.
I consider myself pretty down to earth, but I'm beginning to think it's Sodom and Gomorrah time for the West.
Well, how's this for a policy? For every day that ALL hostages dead and alive are not returned, there will be NO food / water / electricity, etc. That should have started Oct. 8.
Feeding the enemy, trading hostages for terrorists, and extending the war under the banner of morality are not acts of ethics; they are acts of madness.
