Leo, excellent article. To me this is one of the most important days of the year, together with Yom HaShoah, when we remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. When you think about the fallen soldiers Israel honors on Yom HaZikaron, the overwhelming majority were incredibly young people who gave their lives defending the Jewish state. It tears your heart apart.
But there is also a lesson in it. The lesson is the absolute necessity of self-defense. And that lesson doesn’t apply only to Israel — it applies to Jews in the diaspora as well. For years I’ve argued that self-defense should be institutionalized in Jewish schools, yeshivas, and community programs so young Jews grow up with confidence and the ability to protect themselves. Too often it’s treated as optional or “old school.” In my view, one of the best ways we can truly honor those fallen soldiers is by carrying that responsibility ourselves.

Exactly right. Goes hand in hand.
The enduring pursuit of peace necessitates understanding and dialogue between diverse communities.
Historical interactions between Muslims and Jews often present significant challenges to achieving mutual understanding.
According to Jewish experience, the aspiration for peace by some communities is not really a shared human endeavor.
Historically, it appears unlikely that peace will ever be achieved between the Jewish people and Islam.
