During the American Civil War, or the "War of Yankee Aggression Against the South" (depending upon your perspective), after the fall of Atlanta, Union Gen. William T. Sherman spread out his army over a 60 mile wide front and methodically marched southeast to the sea. They burned and pillaged everything in their path. Was it one of our finest hours? Perhaps not; however, it sent the desired message. And within 6 months, that terrible war, with all of its death and carnage, was over. Get the picture?
Sherman Grant and Sheridan literally destroyed the industrial capacity and will of the Confederacy to fight via siege warfare the march through Georgia and South Carolina and the Shenandoah Valley together with a very effective naval blockade In WW2 round the clock bombing of every possible industrial and military target great generals such as Patton. combined with unrestricted submarine warfare doomed Nazi Germany and Japan That is how wars are won not by hostage negotiations
"Israel cannot simply save the hostages and then finish the job against Hamas in Gaza." That is one of the biggest messages delivered in this essay. There is no way to save all the living hostages and Hamas must be exterminated. Also, I think Joshua is a little unfair about why Netanyahu is making the decisions he has been making; Netanyahu has been making [mostly] very right choices under extraordinary circumstances. He will have the hardest, and most necessary, decision to make very soon: When to unleash hell and finish off all of this. I'm expecting a multi-front shock-and-awe. We'll see.
If you have cancer or a bad accident, sometimes you have to cut off your own leg to save your life. Hamas is the tumor growing in the psyche of Israel and Jews worldwide. Amputate them. Finish Hamas. Wipe them out. They know exactly what they are doing. Dealing with a junkyard dog at your throat may not allow for the preservation of pristine moral authority. That can be dealt with later. No matter what Israel does, it will be criticized unfairly. The sooner and more definitively victory is established, the better Israel can prepare for the future. Hamas will never release all the hostages. So are they going to be allowed to hold every Jew hostage? The murdered innocents and brave soldiers who have died defending Israel deserve justice.
Finish Hamas, indeed. I think they are first and foremost the tumor within the psyche of the Palestinians in the disputed areas. Israel proper shows us that living (rather) peacefully together is possible. So, expand the rule of (Israeli) law.
Ah, yes: Coriolanus, Shakespeare's play about how Morality changes, for both soldiers and civilians, during War. But Israel's Plight is not impossible, for The Plight of Morals in War-time is not a permanent one: I was liberal and woolly until we were and now are able here in London to openly see Nazism absolutely current and high up in the State. I soon wised up: The Re-formed Nazi Party is in Alliance with Hamas. All that is needed is to (discretely) show our People the verified Reports of all this. This is your job at Future of Jewish. Morality is right to change in these circumstances: We are faced with Genocidal Nazism once again. And we win too, (not least because Nazis are awful and actually completely pathetic). Am Israel Chai.
Isreal hasn't found a compromise, because there isn't one. There was only the pretense of one to garner world support. That game is over. Time for " refugees" to go.
We are Jews and we can trust HASHEM and only HASHEM ALMIGHTY. These are the “ End of Days “ in Torah and Kabbalah. We have to pray and pray, HASHEM will soon destroy all the evil and also Satan himself away forever to eternity. There will be eternal peace after the Judgment Day. The Third Temple and the Kingdom of Israel (Davidic Dynasty) are eternal and Sanhedrin is also in the Third Temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. HASHEM can make Miracles in an instant. We have NO other to trust but HASHEM ALMIGHTY 🙌🙏🔥🇮🇱✡️❤️✡️🇮🇱🙌🙏🔥🇮🇱✡️❤️✡️🇮🇱🙌🙏🔥
Joshua, thank you for an amazing heart-wrenching piece. Hamas and this war is beyond evil. My heart bleeds for Israel. "WE" all know that the solution is wiping out Hamas, but "WE" are not in this impossible and hateful situation. We do not have to decide on sacrificing innocent hostages. This is the euthanasia dilemma – who makes the decision to “pull-the-plug” Horrific and inhuman.
This reminds me of the terrible, apparently heroic story of Don Alonso Peres de Guzman (in 1294) was told to surrender his city or watch his son, a hostage of the Muslims, die. Rather than surrender, Guzman threw his own dagger down to them and watched as his son was beheaded - in true Muslim style. This deed earned him the nickname ‘The Good’ (El Bueno). A horrific, yet effective decision to sacrifice an innocent child.
He apparently said words to this effect: “I did not beget a son to be made use of against my country, but that he should serve her against her foes. Should Don Juan put him to death, he will but confer honour on me, true life on my son, and on himself eternal shame in this world and everlasting wrath after death.”
The king, Dom Sancho praised him “For the death of your son, which made you like unto our Father Abraham, out of courage, loyalty and fidelity to the oath you had made to me regarding the city of Tarifa, you provided the dagger with which the Moors beheaded him.”
May G-d lift this burden from the Israelis – his People. But then, I am a deist, and I do not think that G-d gets involved in the affairs of mortals.
There is no equal to Hamas’ and all Islamists deranged and evil vow to exterminate or subjugate every non-Muslim. That their “god” commands them to do so, should give EVERY civilised person pause for thought – What kind of a god demands that you slaughter and immolate little children, viciously rape and torture innocent girls and women to death, murder and kidnap innocents to serve your vile purpose? What kind of “person” obeys this command? This can only be an evil god, an evil religion and therefore evil followers and supporters of a death cult. Evil, pure evil
Brillant article Joshua, as always......The hostages, the Bibas family, those beautiful children....and all the others murdered.....We became a people in mourning !!!!!....Enough is Enough.....No more " Palestinians " in Gaza and no more Hamas!!!!!.....
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, Who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. (James 1:5) Israel needs God's wisdom to know what to do in this impossible situation. We are praying for you.
Most of the population of Gaza were emigrees from Egypt. Yes, Palestinians cannot be trusted, & we cannot foolishly believe that even though Hamas might be banashed from their governing- stronghold in Gaza, Egypt & the Arab union cannot & WILL NOT scrutinize & police members of the forming Gazan government in efforts to weed out terrorist sympathizers and any others with ties to the myriad of arab terrorist factions. We have seen that most if not all Arab leaders maintain these terrorist ties. With ANY terrorist faction in command, Gaza, & those horrible tunnels at the ready, Gaza will continue to be an explosive threat to Israel. Can we be complacent because Trump has stepped back to let Egypt & the European Union handle reorganization of Gaza? I pray that Trump does not "step back" completely, leaving Egypt to its own devices. I hope he does not disengage from advising & being the watchdog of Israel. Trump can be an intimidating, rabid dog, & while this threatens many humane, peace-loving people, the language of intimidation and threats apparently command respect & fear in the arab world. Bibi has "curvature of the spine." We NEED Trump's involvement now more than ever. We must address our savage, blood-thirsty neighbors with an unbending Pit Bull demeanor & hope that Trump continues to be our freightening watchdog with the sharp incisors.
We must send a message that taking hostages comes at too great a price and now, more than any time in history, Israel has a mandate to root out every terror network and operator. Israel is a tiny nation with enemies that seek her destruction. We can no longer apologize for Jewish existence in the land, Jews returned to their homeland in a respectful way, they purchased vast amounts of land at fair or above market prices, they built farms, they hired their Arab seasonal farmers from across the Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon. Half of the Bedouins sided with Israel when the Arab League of Nations declared war on her and lost miserably. They came to build a life that for most was nearly extinguished. They came in peace with the hearts of neighbors and it’s time to expect their Arab neighbors to choose sides: terrorists and death or live as Israeli Arabs in prosperity and peace.
"The violent jihadist ideology that fuels groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and ISIS — as well as the regimes in Qatar, Turkey, and Iran — is not an aberration; it is deeply rooted in an extremist interpretation of Islam that glorifies martyrdom, jihad, and the annihilation of infidels"
If these terrorist organizations carry out their atrocities in the name of their religion, it is not because they are putting an extremist interpretation on their sacred texts but rather they are only following the instructions to the faithful contained there in.
"Hamas fully understands Israel’s fundamental ethic: A country built as a refuge for the persecuted will go to extraordinary lengths to protect its own."
Is Israel really a refuge, a safe haven for Jews when it sacrifices the lives of not tens, not hundreds, but thousands of Jewish lives by trading one for a thousand terrorists, thus preparing the way for October 7th, and now trading the lives of less than a hundred hostages several thousand terrorists openly declaring their intent to continue the slaughter of Jews thus "endange[ring] every Israeli who might be the victim of the next attack."
"If Israel does not act decisively, then Hamas, and every future terrorist group that follows its model, will have learned a dangerous lesson: The moral conscience of democracies can be weaponized against them."
Too late The moral conscience of democracies has already very effectively been weaponized against them. Witness the claim to right of free speech by street and campus mobs to college podiums to halls of power with approving reportage from "legacy" media to justify their calls for a renewed genocide of Jews.
"Do the families of the hostages rank higher on the hierarchy of support than those of the fallen soldiers? I guess it depends on who you ask, and the answer is firmly philosophical."
Wrong question. The philosophical one referred to is the ethical question presented as the Runaway Train/Bus conundrum. Put very simply, how many lives are you willing to sacrifice — a few to save the many, or many to save the few. The moral version can be found in Torah where Abraham argues with God about how many good people it would take to save the evil doers of Sodom. Of course, allowing evil to survive means the continuation of their crimes.
Ultimately, then, we come to the cruel question of should Israel create the situation where many more of its people will guaranteed be slaughtered than those it saves or should it consider alternatives, like rescue by the IDF or exchange when conditions are more equitable, such as return of hostages for allowing the enemy's leaders to save their lives by moving to another country. Put another way, is hostage exchange of one for tens or hundreds of murderers dedicated to your destruction a moral policy?
"Much of what’s said and depicted about Israeli settlers is uncontextualized lies. The West Bank is not occupied territory; it is disputed territory as a matter of fact. And the vast majority of Israeli settlers are harmless, law-abiding individuals."
How is it Jews happily trade in the real, thousands of years old place name of the heartland of their people — Judea and Samaria — for a newly minted one — "The West Bank" — by their enemies with the express intent to erase their connection to the land? How are Jews living in Judea and Samaria settlers? Are they not more returnees to their ancestral homeland? Are not the later, post Moslem conquest arrivals the real settler colonizers?
"Many in Israel claim Netanyahu is putting his own political interests above the dire situation of the hostages, and they are probably correct in this analysis."
The media troll this line too. See 29 year old Netanyahu interview outlining his position. How has it changed? Where is he manipulating his position to avoid criminal charges or to stay in power? ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxIl0xTnExA
"There are also the politics of the Israeli Left, which has hijacked the plight of the hostages for their own sociopolitical agenda"
Staging demonstrations does not come for free. There are license fees to be paid to authorities, material for placards, merch like flags, hats, T-shirts, lapel pins, bull horns, coloured flares, tires for burning, etc. There is also the cost for front office and behind the scenes organizers for their time, speakers, offices to coordinate all events, participants, and materiale for the events. Follow the money trail. Who is paying for them? Are they funded by national and or international organizations/countries with their own agendas? Inquiring minds want to know.
"Hamas’ spokesmen . . . said, 'We made concessions regarding the future of the government [of Gaza]— but we have all the legitimacy to be present in the political scene.'
How stupid do they think Israelis are?"
The question should not be asked about the stupidity or gullibility of Israelis but about the stupidity, gullibility, and susceptibility of the Israeli government to international, especially US and EU political arm twisting and mob style demands for "protection fees" akaextortion threats using armaments and trade as bargaining chips.
"This was not just an act of cruelty; it was a calculated message — one meant to inflict maximum pain on Israel, demoralize the families of hostages, and remind the world that Hamas will always prioritize its own survival and ideology over human life, including the people they claim to represent.
This is why every diplomatic effort, every Israeli concession, every well-intentioned peace initiative has failed. It is not because of settlements, borders, or economic conditions; it is because the fundamental premise of Palestinian political and cultural life is that Zionists are evil and Israel has no right to exist."
Spot on analysis. Eliminating Hamas is not a choice. It is an existential imperative. World opinion be damned. History proves it always was anti-Jew.
Preemptive military actions are consistent with Judaism. Let's sign a peace deal, get the hostages back and then start the war again. We know that Hamas' stated goal is the destruction of Israel. It would be preemptive to go after them. I recommend starting with a double tap on the inevitable Hamas victory parade.
The Israelis need to do everything to ensure their security. Unfortunately, they need to look at the remaining Hoyas potential casualties in the next phase of the war. Israel needs to raze Gaza to the ground, leaving not a single structure standing. They need to forcibly remove the Palestinians permanently and annex Gaza as part of Israel.

Wars are not won by being nice and civilized to your enemy but rather by destroying the industrial capacity and will of the enemy to fight
Seige warfare would be easy to implement. Cut off all aid, water, and power and wait for Hamas to unconditionally surrender.
Absolutely! Siege warfare is a very effective form of warfare
"War is all hell"
"Israel cannot simply save the hostages and then finish the job against Hamas in Gaza." That is one of the biggest messages delivered in this essay. The fabric of war is such that in order to end the killing one must be willing to kill.
Think Dresden,Tokyo,Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The rules of war are written to justify the unjustifiable.
A rabid animal must be destroyed. That is reality. That is the moral answer to evil.
End it now.
Gazites must be made to surrender unconditionally.
