So very true. The first 12 years of my life, we lived in a Jewish neighborhood in Chicago. It was wonderful. All my classmates (only 25) were Jewish other than a few gentiles and we got along so well. I still think about them and how much we played together and really loved each other...especially my friend Florence and Barry who walked me to school every day. Such wonderful times

Your comment ‘parent expects something from a child because the child matters’, of course relationships cross a huge spectrum, but my first thought was that some parents are ever so controlling. Parenting is not easy, and years ago, a friend of mine wrote a book ‘be careful in your choice of parents ‘.
And whilst I appreciate and value the seriousness of your article, part of the article reminded me of a joke ..
‘A Jewish mother will always forgive and forget, but she will never forget, that which she forgave’.
That sounds like one of those unfortunate put downs of Jewish mothers. It implies that good forgiving requires forgetting, and that Jewish mothers uniquely fail that erroneous test of amnesia .
ASP, yes it could be considered a 'put down' or a compliment that a Jewish mother never forgets. It is often said that 'behind every successful Jewish businessmen' is a formidable woman'.
The essay addresses three levels of interconnectivity: that between individuals, that between the individual and the Divine, and that between a People and the Divine and shows how they are inextricably woven together.
At the same time, it presents a very cogent refutation of replacement theology, which argues the Covenant has been replaced by the new religions of Christianity and Islam because Jews broke the covenant.
