"No conditions except your immediate and unconditional surrender will be accepted." - U.S. Grant (1862). I am glad to see someone practice this philosophy again.
The history of Rabbi Goren’s life, juxtaposed with the one whose name is no more, is beautiful. Rabbi Goren was the one who blew the shofar at the wall in 1967 when Israel captured Jerusalem in defensive fighting…Shabbat Shalom.
It was not justice to let Sinwar live in Israeli prison ..... Israel should without a doubt have the death penalty when it comes to terrorist murderers like him. Perhaps Oct 7th might not have happened if he were electrocuted or given drugs. Better still why not go with traditional Jewish law where apparently there are four types of capital punishment: a) stoning, b) burning by ingesting molten lead, c) strangling, and d) beheading. My preference for Sinwar would be the molten lead or perhaps stoning by the families of his victims.
An "eye for an eye" sounds good when it comes to these wanton killers.
Have a good Shabbos Joshua and keep up the good fight my friend.
Thank you for citing the teachings in the Torah in your analysis today about Sinwar’s death Joshua. Brilliant writing once again. Glad I got up early to read Future of Jewish. Shabbat Shalom.
It’s certainly possible to overegg the pudding on these kinds of arguments. Regardless of whether one buys into the religious arguments surrounding the virtues of the historical Jewish states, (I am not so sure), it is clear that today Israel is in the right compared to their opponents. It is testament to the foolishness of the Palestinian side that they do not at least pretend to want to establish a single state with full rights for all ethnicities and religions. It would make defending Israel much harder but even that pretence is beyond them.
"the virtues of the historical Jewish state" is that Jews in Israel will not be vulnerable to historically repeated political tides where they make convenient scapegoats to be led to the slaughter for the sins of their executioners.
"We can argue whether it was a good idea for the Jews to achieve statehood in our indigenous homeland"
No, we cannot!!!
Without statehood, Jews are vulnerable to antisemitic attacks. It always begins with words and too often ends with Jewish blood flowing in their gutters.
The assimilationists, the naive, the blind, and the ignorant who say "It can't happen here" have time and again paid for it with their lives, and because of their complacency, added the lives of their fellow Jews.
In Western democracies daily we see the spectacle of the black and brown shirt rabble demonstrating in the streets and on college campuses with impunity under the banner of "Free Speech" crying for another genocide of the Jews, while the police who are supposed to enforce laws against licentious speech like incitement to violence, hatred, libel, slander do not just stand by but often even arrest pro-Israel demonstrators on the grounds of incitement to civil unrest.
And we must not overlook the fact that the antisemites have already elected officials occupying positions of political power in these democracies. The safe haven, the only true refuge for Jews is their legitimate, ancestral homeland, Israel: No other police force, no other military, and certainly no other government is going to protect Jews like Israel will.
Side note: the statement "Israel has said it will guarantee that those holding Israeli hostages would be given impunity" surely contains a typo. We should read the word "impunity" as "immunity." Otherwise, the statement would be saying that the hostage takers would be given every right to inflict what horrors they perpetrated against their innocent victims.
