The shift started in the 60s with the destruction of our universities by leftist ideologues who saw no value in true 'democracy'. These were the same people who admired Mao, Stalin and Castro. They inculcated these beliefs into two subsequent generations of students, and we see the result in the media, entertainment and now the pandering politicians on the left. It is ironic that the best hope for maintaining true western ideals will come from Eastern European nations (and they have their own issues).
This is why our high schools and universities need to make sure students are given alternative views from writers like Ayn Rand and the those who escaped from totalitarian and theocratic regimes. It is telling that our students are not exposed to these points of views, from those who have lived them.
I don't think that there is an erosion of liberal principles, there is an erosion of common sense and the decline use of brain cells by a certain portion of humanity.
Liberalism was rooted in Protestantism and its foundational beliefs of individual liberty, equality before the law, science, tolerance and a commitment to reason etc, and the liberal West, however secular, was rooted in the social norms that sprang from them. All these things helped create the cohesive societies of the West, which are now dead and gone, killed off by everything from mass media and mass migration, the global corporate state and its needs for addled consumers and cheap labor, plus mass secularization and extreme individualism.
What has replaced liberalism is a tribal war between globalists and nationalists, with an alliance of globalists that includes everything from global banks and corporations to massive media cos and then the campus/activist Left, who imagine themselves as a vanguard that will create an egalitarian utopia, if only we hand them total power to smite the Oppressors and center the Oppressed.
Under this dispensation, Israel and Zionism are the main enemies of the globalist class, for reasons that include the fact that Israel has a conservative govt, that Israelis are still willing to fight and die for their particular place and people (which offends globalists deeply) and because it's very important for globalists to present themselves as compassionate saviors of the brown and oppressed, which they imagine displays their moral superiority and provides their divine right to rule. Thus they have fashioned a mythical totem called the Palestinian, a proxy Christ who's suffered and died for the sins of religion and parochial particularism and who must be defended at all costs by all people who believe in the inevitable congealing of a universal humanity. (Of course there's also much Jew hate here, as the Jewish scapegoat is always wheeled out during times of social upheaval.)

The caption opines, “ ‘Silence is violence’ we’re told, while much of the Left did nothing about the Iranian regime murdering thousands of its own people in January.” The thing is, the murderous suppression referred to was far from silent, ergo, it was not violent! We can sleep easy with a clear conscience. If it’s not silent it’s not violent, the logic is entirely consistent.
