We have to stop sounding the alarm about antisemitism as a political strategy to get our neighbors to care. It’s not working, and it may even be hurting us.
Do you mean things like joining forces with groups fighting to protect our 2nd Amendment rights? Or, speaking out when white people are demonized— particularly white men— or denied jobs they are qualified for because of DEI efforts? What about supporting real masculinity for our boys and men instead of calling it toxic? What about joining with parental rights groups who don’t want graphic pornography or talk of a gazillion different genders in schools? How about protecting female sports from biological men? These are all issues ripping America apart. As an American Zionist Jew, I support these efforts—and I never see any other Jews in my very blue community supporting them. In fact, they are all on the opposite side of these issues from me. I agree with your point—calling out antisemitism is not working. Many Americans see Jews as the ones leading all the causes that have harmed our American values with the post-modern, oppression olympics crap, decolonization crap. And they’re not wrong.
You said it, MR. Best thing is to align with those groups and indeed, on some of them they ARE posting pro-Israel stuff, little by little. Our best bet is with the religious Christians. So many are extremely supportive and we NEED THEM.
You are exactly right, most liberal American jews(70+ vote Democrat) are on the wrong side of every issue, look at the ACLU who champion anti American causes like open borders, trans sexualism etc. look at despicable politicians like Schumer, Nadler, Shiff & Raskin. Look at Hollywood & the degenerate Jews in that industry.
I am a Jew & I am disgusted by them, what do you think Billy Bob in the trailer park thinks? We need to align ourselves with strong American values, the MAGA movement to an extent, second amendment rights & freedom, we need to demonstrate that we are not “victims in waiting” Strength & courage are American values. They should be ours.
You totally nailed it! I've been frustrated for YEARS that most American Jews vote Democrat even tho the party is increasingly becoming more anti-Israel & pro Palestinian every day! As far as social issues, I also think that the Torah is far more conservative on said issues as well.
Problem as I see it is at very least ALL the Reform synagogues with huge memberships are all full-tilt woke-tards... my former one (Temple Emanu-el) included. I wouldn't be surprised IF they hosted ManiPedi... it's sad. We left NYShitty a couple years ago but our fam wuz already banned from temple due ta them bein' nazis (oh yes!) an' imposin' absurd medi-cull mandates...an' Empire pass not unlike the yellow star! They host mahvelous lectures all the time but near-all the guests are lefties--the foul Chuckie ShooMerde included... blech. Just as there's product placement, some'buddy's gotta reach out a temples, one by one, an' place "right-minded" speakers! (Libertarians, a-politty-cull folks included!--many on the "right" hate us joos anywayz)... There could even be "lecture circuits" that tour--these folks are suckin' in CNN (still!)... An' yep, they need a support the 2A...fer sure! (how 'bout a funded / free lessons jooish 2A program fer us former lefties that woke up an' smelled the cawfee? I'd take self-defense over an attic any day!)
Totally! I get you. I've been a Democrat most of my life but I cannot tolerate the woke progressive left. (In some ways I changed on Oct. 8 when I lost patience with the whole idea of victimhood). I keep hoping a more moderate, logical, middle-of-the road Democrat will step up for 2028, but who knows? I absolutely support all you say.
We don't need a new antisemitism strategy. Israel needs a new war strategy and we should help it get one. Antisemitism is ingrained in the Christian and Muslim part of the globe, so much that even Israel's so-called friendly critics don't know how antisemitic they are and where it comes from. The best answer to antisemitism today is TOTAL Israel victory in Gaza, subjugation of the entire Muslim population there, followed by the elimination of the Palestinian Authority, extension of Israeli sovereignty to all of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, and lockdown of the self-described lunatic Palestinian population until they eventually leave while those who stay will respect law and order or be killed. There will be peace and quiet then, Gaza will be off our tv screens and free Palestine will drift into the neverland dustbin of history. The Christian and Muslim swath of humanity (sic!) will then move on to other important issues like Muslim prayer halls in western schools and jihad terrorism at Eurovision contests.
Of COURSE we need ta have total victory in Gaza... this mollycoddlin' fer the sake of "dip-lunacy" is losin' lives. BUT even if Israel prevails (g-d willin'!) the howls will be louder fer years... no peace & quiet, they gotta beat that dead horse 'til it's dust. "We" are hated an' folks are too blind ta see the incomin' caliphate... GOTTA be fought on BOTH fronts--PR, git some common sense inta the DemoCraps an' of course "Fight Fiercely"(includin' at HahVurd) an' win!
I respectfully disagree. The Jewish leadership in the Diaspora is weak and the surrounding governmental leadership in western countries is profoundly antisemitic, the current US administration being the sole exception. Argentina is on Israel's side and Hungary too for now. But trying to persuade suicidal gays and their ilk or any other groups in society who do not already support Israel is a waste of time. Even in the Diaspora we should be pushing for Israeli conquest of Gaza and then the elimination of the Palestinian Authority; and we should do this loud and clear, going on the attack, slamming the useful idiots like Carney, Macron and the jerk who is Britain's PM. Boycott Guinness. Avoid traveling to Iceland. Start denouncing beautiful Barcelona. How about Jewish power and a Jewish army in western cities. People will start noticing, believe me.
Excellent essay. We need to increase support with the religious Christians that are as passionately supportive of Israel/Jews as we are, like Mike Huckabee. Groups like The International Fellowship for Christians and Jews--those types of organizations. Various churches. And it would be great to find those quiet Muslim groups that are supportive (they exist).
You are making an excellent point that calling out racism, hatred, or discrimination as antisemitic is not effective. I imagine some Israel- haters even consider being called anti-semitic a badge of honor.
We need to stop being overly self conscious and focus on being better Jews by fulfilling mitzvot.
History has proven the assimilation is NOT the answer.
Non Jews only respect Jews who respect themselves. When we try to blend in and become like our non-Jewish brethren it only creates resentment.
Look at our history-when we tried to be like the Egyptians they enslaved us.
When we tried hellenisation the ancient Greeks desecrated our temple. When we tried to be like the Romans they sent us into the longest exile. When we tried to be English we got expelled, when we tried to be Spanish we got the inquisition, all through our long exile the story was the same culminating in Germany when the enlightened Jews invented a Germanised Reform Judaism and considered themselves Germans of the Jewish faith 6,000,000 of us ended up going up in smoke in concentration camps.
If we keep repeating the errors of the past how will that create a better future.
We are the chosen people- not chosen because we are better than anyone else but because Hashem chose us to be a light to the nations- a sort which f international conscience tasked with holding a mirror up to the societies among which we have been exiled for 2,000 years- in order to bring the knowledge and wisdom of the faith of the G-d of Abraham to the four corners of the earth- not though converting the masses but by, through our own moral behaviour showing the world a better way to live.
I proudly wear my kippah as an ambassadorial cap and am always kind, courteous and helpful to everyone around me.
In our faith we are taught, “it is not for us to complete the task, but neither are we free to desist from it.
Let’s all be better humans- one person cannot change the world but if everyone exchanged their sense for f entitlement with a sense of responsibility we could be living in the messianic era to-day.
The pursuit of equality if fundamentally flawed because we are not all equal- we are necessarily different- just as in a jigsaw puzzle each piece is integral to the entire picture, yet each piece is unique and different from every other piece.
So instead of worrying about what everybody else is doing we should each first concern ourselves with what we are doing.
Instead of standing in n judgement of others- judge yourself first.
So, I was raised a bagels-and-lox Jew. Then in my marriage I was conservator -- sent the kids to yeshiva, observed yom tovim and Shabbat, learned a lot. Now, I'm an atheist BUT I see everything through a very Judaic lens. I don't see myself as "assimilated." For me, it's the wisdom/morality of Judaism that still resonates for me (and the humor!). I have nothing against those who observe, but I couldn't be more passionate about Jews and Israel just as I am.
This would be a compelling argument if it didn’t ignore the fact that millions of unassimilated shtetl Jews were murdered in the Holocaust while assimilated Jews who fled to the West survived. You should remember that Israel was founded by secular socialist Jews who revered the advancements made in global science and culture. Guns and bombs defended that state, not prayers and rituals.
... And how do you propose we do this other thing you are suggesting?
I see thought leaders on social media and here on Substack crying out about how badly Israel needs a kick ass PR team. I couldn't agree more. Iran (and their proxies) China and Russia are winning the PR war against the Jewish state.
I very much admire Mijal, but she is not advocating anything new. The ADL has advocated against all forms of bigotry for years, to the point of minimizing its fight, until recently, against antisemitism. Various Holocaust museums have attempted to universalize the Holocaust, not as a particular Jewish experience but as one of many prejudices. I've recently reread David Wyman's "Abandonment of the Jews." I found it strangely comforting to realize that the level of antisemitism in pre-war America combined with the prominence of Jew-haters was far greater in the US then than now. There was open and unapologetic job and housing discrimination against Jews and obviously, in the elite universities. Today, the center of Jew-hatred is largely in academia and on the extreme left and for whatever his faults and for whatever his motivation, Trump is going after the Jew-haters with a sledge hammer. So while some Democratic politicians equivocate about Jew-hatred, Trump does not. (I'm not under any illusion here about Trump's motivations; I'm sure his main target is leftist indoctrination and ideology, not antisemitism.) So the alliances we are going to have to make are not only with our traditional liberal allies, but also with conservatives who oppose "anti-colonialism," DEI, trans extremism, socialism and all manner of wokism.
The ADL is an arm for the Democratic Party—especially the Obama wing. They have been smearing people as transphobes for “mis gendering” people and partner with the Southern Poverty Law Center who smears brave people who tell the truth about Islam such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali. They have failed completely.
Agree with the sentiments in this article. Despite the hue and cry against Jews worldwide what is needed is to connect yourselves to the best of Western and civilizational ideas. The anti-semites aren't going to change no more than the segregationists were going to change from Jim Crow and racial hatred. Speak to the best in people as Dr. King spoke to the ideals of the Constitution in his "I have a dream" speech in '63.
Of course, fight and educate against antisemitism. However, I think focusing on the larger, civilizational war--Radical Islam vs. Westen Civilization--is a more productive use of time, money, and energy.
Using antisemitism to define ourselves as Jews is a losing proposition and denies who we are as a people.
While I share some of your sentiment, we need something actionable. “Building alliances around public safety” is too vague. What concrete actions would you take or suggest to Jewish leaders? Taking joy in our Jewishness is one thing (Shabbat, kashrut, etc). But what specifically do you want our leaders to take on?
Anti-racism is divisive because many people are simply racist. The same is true of calling out Antisemitism, because many people are actually (fashionably) antisemitic. Far better to tell ordinary people that whilst they may have these feelings, they lead to criminals using these feelings to destroy free societies and Democracy itself. Thus safely is a good route to take, because the threat of Terrorism of Fascism which follows from Racism is indeed very real.
So called ''Antiracism'' IS racist. It's like CRT, judging people for good or ill by skin color. THAT is why it's divisive. X Kendi's book lays it all out. Most Americans are NOT racist.
100% correct. This is not surrender this is the path to less Jew hate in our world. Every post you make about Jew hate does not resonate with anyone who is not Jewish for the reasons you laid out. I barely get a like from Jews on my posts. The strategy has to be to stand up. First off be proud of being Jewish always, stand up for all hate to all groups, talk about America and a land of opportunity and freedom that Jews have helped create and what is has become over the last 150 years. Talk about America and our country or your own Jewish relatives who fought in World Wars for this great country. When you talk about Israel talk about how it has helped to eliminate terrorists who have killed Americans, always supported the US. Talk about other groups who have been targeted here and as a Jew you are someone who can relate to their issues especially nowadays to support them. Sure Jew hate needs to be called out but unfortunately most posts I see on instagram just speak to the choir. Talking about the United States that is most important. Example with Mamdani in NYC, it should be about socialism, communism (do you know how many Americans lost their lives fighting communism for good reason), idiotic policies like defunding our police, lack of experience, a wealthy kid who never held a job but throws lavish weddings for himself. If your Jewish it should be a no brainer to go to the polls against this guy as he literally has called for the murder of all Jews (I mean get out and vote). As someone who wants to show the other side of what this means think of his policies that mean something to other groups. First of defunding police, crime will surge, socialism doesn't work see SF and every other socialist country/place in world history, talk about him capping our education system into the best schools. Many immigrants come here and push their kids who work their ass off to get into these schools and he will cap them? Crazy. There is so much to discuss but unfortunately the Jew hate stuff is there and I hate even writing this but even from some of our own which is absolutely disgusting (Brad Lander, Nadler) etc.
“I know this might sound like surrender to some. Like we’re abandoning the fight or conceding too much ground. But I’m not asking us to stop calling antisemitism antisemitism; I’m asking us to stop making it our primary political weapon, since that weapon has been compromised.”
Well I am the term antisemitism is an intellectualisation of Jew hatred call it what it is Jew hatred and while your at it stop with the West Bank nonsense it is Judea and Samaria it’s much more difficult to get the Jews out of Judea than the euphemism the original Jordanian king came up with.
One way this is happening in Washington state is by forming political action committees focused on things that matter to mainstream Americans - public safety, good education, etc - and supporting candidates who show they are friends of the Jewish community. They are not focusing so much on fighting antisemitism, rather they are cultivating relationships with public leaders and opposing candidates who work against Jews, because those candidates usually work against common interests like public safety too. https://thecholent.substack.com/p/washingtons-new-pac
Agree 100%. The cries of antisemitism are falling on deaf ears. But it also isn't just about us, it's about liberalism and Western values. That's what is at stake now. We need to ally with people who want to defend those values and fight against the toxic ideologies that are working to undermine them.
Do you mean things like joining forces with groups fighting to protect our 2nd Amendment rights? Both! One speaks of a U.S. domestic strategy, the other addresses a potential Israeli strategy.

At his core, every person thinks his tribe is the only one that matters. You can drill that right down to guitar players and keyboardists.
Second point: every person is a member of many tribes.
So, what is the name of a tribe that Jews should identify themselves as belonging to?
The tribe of Western Civilization? The tribe of rational persons? The tribe of hard workers?
Perhaps you could learn to say yeehaw with conviction.
I don't know the answer. Just spitballing here. Good luck with this!
