"Those who embrace such tribal and sectarian hatreds will invariably, in time, aim their guns well beyond the Jewish people. Indeed, if we open our eyes, we will see that they are already doing so."
A heart-breaking, but not soul-crushing summary of all the world DOES need to know. Sadly, the Canadian government is just as shameful in their back-pedaling. Is there a Canadian reader out there who knows better than I why that waffling has become expedient for our Liberal Party since mid-October? If you are in Vancouver, please come out to our weekly rallies at the Art Gallery on Sundays at 2 p.m. Am Yisrael Chai!
Another excellent and useful essay, Joshua. Just one comment, though. When talking about the experience of Jews in governing, or lack of it, it has been noticed here in the UK how often the British Conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli is ignored or forgotten (even in official documents in this country that mention Jewish participation in politics). So, just to remind you all, here is the opening from the entry in - yes, you guessed it - Wikipedia (a source I always recommend my students to avoid at least until they know how to use it properly, which of course I do!):
"Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, KG, PC, DL, JP, FRS[1] (21 December 1804 – 19 April 1881) was a British statesman, Conservative politician and writer who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He played a central role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party, defining its policies and its broad outreach. Disraeli is remembered for his influential voice in world affairs, his political battles with the Liberal Party leader William Ewart Gladstone, and his one-nation conservatism or "Tory democracy". He made the Conservatives the party most identified with the British Empire and military action to expand it, both of which were popular among British voters. He is the only British Prime Minister to have been born Jewish."
PS Disraeli was also a novelist, who some consider rather good in a 19th century sort of way. Always amazes me that these folk can find time, but I suppose having servants helped a bit. Anyway, his complete works can be bought very cheaply in the excellent Delhi Classics epub series.
Delphi, not Delhi. Another stooopid autocorrect. I am sure there are excellent epubs (the autocorrect tried to change this to 'pubs'!) associated with Delhi, but this is not one of them.
Excellent. The pity is that neither the Palestinians nor the left world wide will settle for a solution less than the death of every Jew. This has been particularly distressing in the USwhich has exhibited a level of antisemitism that exceeds my worst imagining and a feckless natioal goverment seemingly prepared to abandon Israel for the sake of electoral college votes in Michigan. I always presumed that the Holocaust could never occur in the US. I now believe that is wrong. There are large elements of the general population and distressingly large numbers among the elite class in the government, media and corporate world who would stand by and cheer as the Jews are loaded onto rail cars for transport to the death camps. At the end of the day there are no reliable allies for Israel and the Jewish people. Israel is on its own and must be self sufficient in its economy, its weapons industry and in its defense. It must be prepared to act ruthlessly in its own interests and ignore the handwringing and protestations of its fair weather friends, particularly the US whose rapid leftward drift will make it increasingly unreliable as an ally or supporter.
Absolutely brilliant Joshua. This needs to get into the mainstream media particularly our
Jew hating BBC and Guardian. They might learn something.
The Israelis who were murdered in the kibbutzim, towns and villages on 7th Oct were from the left wing of society. Many saw a future for a Palestinian state as they welcomed Gazans into their homes and businesses as employees. They trusted them. For those who survived that trust is now gone.
While many Gazans may be delighted to see the end of Hamas they have no intention of living beside Israel in their own state. It remains the objective of Palestine eherever they are to see Palestine free (of Jews) from the river to the sea.
I would like to add something to the discussion. If one chooses to go into government, especially niche areas, shouldn’t the number one prerequisite be knowing the language spoken in the area. I do remember during the Cold War when knowing Russian was a given. Why, why for decades is there no Diplomats , nor politicians who speak Arabic? How can you run a foreign policy without having any knowledge of what is being spoken? How dare these grovelling politicians, who have no idea what they are talking about be in charge of deciding the future of the Middle East. Until such time, there will always be “East is East and West is West and never the two shall meet “. Shabbat Shalom from a Canadian who really misses Stephan Harper .
However, as history shows, such elements sometimes behave in the opposite way: Obtaining power allows them to accumulate more resources, which are used to further promote their ideological vision, as proved by Hitler, the Iranian Republic of Iran, and ISIS.
A worthwhile article, I think (as a Brit), even if one might disagree with some of the sentiments or recommendations. But for those just glancing at this post, please note that I assume Bernie's little piece above is intended to be a reference to the article concerned, i.e. an article with the title 'Are Islamists in charge of Britain?', in the interrogative and on a site called 'The Free Press'. At first I thought Bernie was wanting to make an assertion, that the free press consists of Islamists who are in charge of Britain. That would have needed a longer and critical blast from me!
Congratulations on reaching 76, Bernie. We are of the same generation (74 this year - and with early myeloma! But finding it absolutely fascinating). What a mess we seem to be leaving to our grandchildren and - in my case, at least - great grandchildren. But I continue to hope. 😀
Another one of so many excellent assessments, Joshua. I hope this one is shared widely as it is bound to open some minds and alter misperceptions.

Just so right and on the button and there will NEVER be a two state solution!

So sad and so true. You left out academia in your “elite” list of those wishing to purge their worlds of Jews.

6 months of intensive language instruction can bring a person up to speed, followed by 6 months in the language environment of the speakers.
Exactly, so why isn’t it a prerequisite?

Joshua did you really mean to say:
The Iranian republic of Iran?
or did you mean Islamic republic?
Good catch! Fixed.
Wished there was a way to just pm to avoid a published comment about something that happens to us all in the days of self editing.
