What a touching article, Joshua. I so enjoyed reading it. This was, for me, quite nostalgic especially when you described the 'profile' configurations. As young kids living in south Tel Aviv, mostly Mizrahi/Sephardic populations, we were incredibly and almost unanimously Likud, and thus very patriotic, so serving was seen as such as honorable and prestigious thing to go through. I remember that profile 97 was the highest but I knew I could never earn that because I'm so short and I didn't care. What a sweet memory- thanks :-)

My aunts in Israel, mothers of both male and female soldiers (my cousins), don't get much sleep so they are doing just that. One of my cousins volunteered to help rebuild the agricultural plots that were destroyed in the kibbutzim.

How amazing, your cousin who chose to volunteer. I wish things could be different. Hope your family there is well and safe.

My heart breaks for these families. I admire Israelis so much for their sense of duty. I myself, am intensely fearful, as a British citizen of the mindset of the younger generation today. No direction, no loyalty and absolutely no work ethic. If there was a World War tomorrow they would be off duty! Things have gone so badly wrong! It is frightening.
