I was in the US Army in Germany in the 1960's in Oberpfalz/Bavaria where I was a spy for the Army division of NSA. I learned passable German in addition to my Warsaw Pact language.

I visited Dachau, not far from Munich. I also visited Flossenburg - 75 km away. Flossenburg was where Hitler had Dietrich Bonhoeffer executed days before the war ended.

Do you know how many concentration camps the Nazis had? 1,000 of them plus 30,000 slave labor camps and then the Vernichtungslager. These were the death camps: Sobibor, Auschwitz/Birkenau, Chelmno, Majdanek, Belzec and Treblinka. You lasted a day or so there - that's it - the end.

If you ever run in to someone who denies the Holocaust ask them what camps they have personally visited, because I can personally tell you that you won't forget it and you won't put up with with Holocaust denial either.

You might as well deny the Atlantic Ocean or the Moon.

Thank you for this moving comment. Seeing for yourself is so powerful. For those who want to read more about the Nazi camp system—more than 44,000 sites in all, including ghettos—here is a link from the National World War II Museum: https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/nazi-concentration-camp-system

Thank you for your very moving and truthful personal account Mr Galt. After World War II Major Gen. Grigory Krivose'ev documented each village and town and city where Russians died, too. His work is fully available in Book form in English at The British Library here in London. 27 Million Russian folk perished in total. All documented.

Thank you for the beautiful introduction to the poetry and life of Leah Goldberg... I know many of the Hebrew children's books and songs but I am looking forward to reading her in English...

My pleasure! Goldberg is wonderful. I often write about Jewish poetry in my newsletter, and I try to spotlight writers who deserve more attention.

Get your own sticker that says "Palestinian genocide" and put it on top of the word Holocaust. Mission accomplished!

There is no escape in the loneliness of Intellectuality. All very Romantic and beautiful, and important as this is to preserve the facts and memory, but I also like the fly-posted response you show - ‘Nazis are weak’. Indeed they are, Utterly pathetic in fact. 27 Million Russians were murdered by Hitler. Try saying this also did not happen in Moscow, and watch the Nazis get their heads kicked in by Russia.

27 Million or Soviet citizens died during the WW2. Mostly Jews, Ukrainians, Belarusians as well as Russians and many more. And Hitler and Stalin were responsible for that. And history has a way of repeating itself in a twisted way: modern Russia is a Nazi state.

A truly beautiful and touching article, Aviya! This sign denying the Holocaust and claiming it was fake being put up not in Cairo, Damascus, Amman, Baghdad, Tehran, Beirut, Algiers, Rabat, or Istanbul where you’d expect to see something like this, but in Chicago in 2025 not 1938, is shocking! It just goes to show how prevalent antisemitism still is around the world and how bad it is particularly right now. Holocaust education in this country has clearly failed. Many young people know nothing about the Shoah at all. So many folks on the right flock to morons like Tucker Carlson, Darryl Cooper and Nick Fuentes who tell straight up lies about WWII, the Holocaust and the Jewish people. Universities and academics compare the Nakba to the Holocaust. This is all indicative of how poorly we teach the Holocaust in school in this country. As to the comparison between the Nakba and the Holocaust or the comparison to the current situation and the Holocaust, lets get something straight, the Nakba was a terrible tragedy but it was not ethnic cleansing or genocide.

Nor was Israel responsible for it. The Palestinian leadership and the Arab countries caused the Nakba by not accepting the Jewish state as their neighbor and invading Israel as soon as it declared independence. As to the situation of the Palestinians today, first off, there is no genocide in Gaza. Second, while there is no doubt the Palestinian people deal with very real hardships, their plight as tough as it is, is in no way comparable to the Shoah. The Holocaust was oppression on a whole other level. To make either of these comparisons is to insult those European and North African Jews who were persecuted, discriminated against, had their property stolen, were deported, forced to do hard labor, starved, tortured, raped, and murdered by the Nazis and their allies. I would like to leave a little list of recommended reading below for anyone who might read this to educate themselves on the Holocaust so things like what happened to Aviya and her fellow community members don’t keep happening:
