100% correct. You're describing the nebbish mentality, which is the little voice that says, "If you don't make them angry, they won't hurt you." Unfortunately, that's not true. Weakness and passivity invites contempt and predation.
Look at how the October 7 attack was widely described as "resistance to Zionist aggression." In this world, simply existing while Jewish is considered a provocation that justifies violent reprisal.
There may only be a tiny fraction of the population that actually wants to go out and hurt Jews, but history shows that the rest likely would not object. That's why it is important to exercise forceful resistance at the beginning.
There was a huge outpouring of support for the frat boys who protected the American flag from being replaced with a Palestinian flag. People respect strength. I would love to see Jewish college students physically break through the human chains and barricades erected against them. That would do more to elicit public good will than the so-called high road.
No one’s erecting barricades and human chains against Jews. There are a number of Jews in those protests and maybe there are some in the barricades and human chains. Those are overtly pro-Israel Jews who are trying to walk through the encampment and they’re not letting those guys through.
In another case they were blocking an entrance to a library, but they were blocking it for everyone, not just overtly pro-Israel Jews.
You are trying and failing to rationalize and excuse what is obviously an anti- Jewish movement with connections to terrorists and the organizations who fund them. If there are Jews who choose to protest along with Islamofascists and other Anti- American Marxist fanatics advocating murder and the destruction of Israel, and the United Staes, they are either morons, Marxists, or ashamed of their heritage. And not indicative of anything but the need to whitewash what’s going on from your perspective.
That’s not true about the flag. What happened was the first ran up the Palestinian flag on the same poll as the US flag. Both flags were on the same pole with the US flag above the Palestinian flag.
When I was at high school someone made an anti-Semitic remark. Three of us, one the son of a Holocaust survivor, corned him after school, warned him, and punched him in the jaw. That ended that. The idea then was that you stop these things before they start. We seem to have forgotten this and let it spread.
Great article. Jewish organizations, not just individuals, need to understand this. As a parent of a college student, it’s clear that Hillel needs a new mindset. Its project of educating universities on spotting & combating antisemitism seems to have failed. While it’s important to create safe spaces on campus for Jewish students this is not enough. Hillel must teach students the importance of fighting back instead of just retreating to safe spaces.
Excellent article. I encourage our local Chabad to arm up, learn gun safety and practice target shooting. They did tell me that the local police have their backs and have shown up unexpectedly.
I have been asking myself the same question. Two weeks ago my neighbour called me hysterical to say “they’re here” we live down the street from a synagogue so I asked her what she was talking about. There were demonstrations across the street from the synagogue. I didn’t even think about it, I grabbed my Israeli flag and ran outside and I walked over to the synagogue singing and raising my flag with pride. The police called me over to say that I shouldn’t instigate any violence. What? They were about 100 people screaming through a megaphone Intifada, but I was the only person the police spoke to. Enough! At least in Montreal we have a large Sephardic community and they have initiated a voluntary security presence for all Jewish institutions. This is insane, have we not learned anything? Where is the JDL?
G-d bless you. I'm a Montreal Jew - not Sephardi, but my late husband was. The JDL has been labelled a terrorist organization but I'm hearing that Jews are reorganizing in small groups in other cities - especially in the US - to "take care" of the bullies without police involvement. They are doing this under various names and organizational covers. Forget about getting any help from the Montreal Federation. If you want, email me at susanhirshorn@gmail.com. Let's talk.
If there is only people protesting one issue, violence is unlikely. But as soon as counterprotestors show up, the odds of a confrontation go way up. Hence the police reaction.
In my country the National Union of Students voted to expel Jews. The West is full of anti-semitic groups and has discarded the philosophical heritage it shared with Jews. How long before another pogrom I wonder.
Wait a minute. What country was this? Maybe they threw out “Zionists.” That’s unfair because they leave the Gentiles Zionists alone, but it’s not a Jew-ban.
Yes. The only thing bullies understand is "physicality". I've been saying this online since the world turned against us after Oct 7 under the guise of political correctness. Time for diaspora Jews to exert it. We love Israel but our ancestors helped build the Western democracies and we should not abandon our rights as citizens of the US, Canada, Britain, etc. The Jewish Defense League is still considered a terrorist organization and it's on the FBI list. But I am hearing that it is reorganizing again under different names and organizational covers. Just like the Islamo/Leftist alliance has been doing for decades. If they want war, let us give it to them.
The JDL murdered the head of an Arab organization in California with a bomb. Hence they’re on the list. I met Irv Rubin once. He came to my school. He was very tall! Basically a loudmouthed belligerent look if you ask me.
Be realistic. The Jews who are willing to get physical are not going to be your Yeshiva Bochers, dentists and insurance salesmen. My question to you is: did they ever catch the individuals involved with bombing that Arab org? If they didn't, then it was a successful mission and likely saved Jewish lives. Once the word is on the street that it's not only Israel's mighty IDF and Mossad who can pile on the hurt when needed, I suspect the anti-Semites will think twice about threatening us.
They know who did it. Two Jewish men who soon took off for Israel who refused to extradite them. They are still living openly as settlers in the West Bank today. The Arab organization was not dangerous. It was something like “The Arab American Antidefamation League.”
I don't know about that org; whether it was dangerous or not. Plenty of Islamist terrorist groups or their supporters hide behind innocuous "covers". (Ditto for the Jewish ADL, which has long been a cover for Marxist operations, I'm sorry to say.) And I'm glad the guys are living in Judea/Samaria. I don't say "West Bank". That is the name Jordan gave these areas in 1950 to try and erase the fact that Jews are indigenous to it.
During the Enlightenment, Jews in Europe and America were grateful for the freedom and progress it brought. Although there were still remnants of antisemitism from old regimes, we believed they would fade away in modern times.
However, we failed to recognize that antisemitism had deep roots in Western culture and religion. As secular modernity rose, so did hatred towards Jews – they were once again seen as greedy, inferior, and a threat to traditional values. This led to the Holocaust, a systematic attempt to eliminate all Jews in Europe. The indoctrination of this hatred, particularly in Nazi and communist states, prepared the masses for mass murder. As a result, Jews learned that they could never truly be safe in the modern world.
And here we are again. The thriving Jewish communities of the West are now a thing of the past. Powerful figures on social media, elected officials, and mainstream news outlets promote extremist ideologies under the guise of supporting Palestine. While it is important to address anti-Israel sentiments and condemn excessive reactions on college campuses, we must also hold protesters accountable for their extreme actions.
By aligning with radical groups and taking polarizing stances on the conflict, they undermine the efforts of peace activists and harm those they claim to support. This trend poses a threat to the peaceful coexistence and prosperity that has been experienced by Jewish Americans and could potentially lead to the downfall of the liberal order that they helped establish. Both left-wing and right-wing anti-Semitism must be addressed as it stems from centuries of persecution within Christian societies, creating a constant sense of insecurity and vulnerability for Jewish people.
Leftwing antisemitism doesn’t exist much unless you think strong anti-Israel sentiment is antisemitism, in which case, fair enough.
I have spent a lot of time on these strongly anti-Israel Hard Left spaces. Let me tell you something.
The Left is allergic to “vulgar antisemitism” or the dislike of Jews as Jews, not as Zionists.
If anyone engages in vulgar antisemitism, others will quickly pounce on him and beat him up, saying that the problem is “Zionists,” not Jews. They also say that Zionism has nothing to do with Jewishness or Judaism, which is of course bullshit. They also say that Zionist Jews are not “real Jews,” which is more bullshit.
Even singling out “Zionists” as the problem is disengenuous. 86% of American and 95% of British GENTILES are Zionists, along 94% of American and 95% of British Jews. The Left says these people called “Zionists” are the problem. So in other words basically EVERYONE is the problem? What a dumb politics.
No comments even remotely critical of Jews are permitted in these forums. If you keep doing it you get a loud and very public ban. A lot of those forums have strict “no antisemitism” rules which are strongly enforced. So disliking Jews for anything other than pro-Israel sentiment results in a quick ban on these forums. If you hang out on those forums, you will see people getting banned for that all the time.
The insidious spread of Nazi propaganda on race was like a virus, infecting the minds of ordinary Germans and twisting their moral compasses until they could no longer differentiate right from wrong. Trudl Junge, Hitler's former personal secretary, witnessed his uncanny ability to manipulate others' consciences, a key factor in his success as a dictator.
But it wasn't just Hitler's charm and charisma that led to the widespread adoption of Nazi racial ideology. As author Koonz (Duke Univ.) reveals, academics played a crucial role in legitimizing and amplifying these dangerous beliefs. German universities were "Nazified" under Hitler's regime, with professors becoming strong supporters of his ideals and lending academic credibility to his twisted theories.
As we fast forward to 2024, do you see any parallels between this dark historical period and our current world? Perhaps in the treatment of marginalized groups or the manipulation of public opinion through propaganda? The haunting echoes of the past can still be heard today as we continue to grapple with the consequences of allowing hateful ideologies to take hold.
Antisemitism in communist states (USSR) paved the way for the Holocaust? No way Yitzak Shamir said, “The USSR was anti-antisemitic.” Antisemitism was a capital offense in the Soviet Union.
Jews say antisemites think Jews are inferior. Do they though. A lot of people think Jews are superior. The complaint is that they act bad - lie, cheat, and steal - that they are a race of White collar criminals.
To me, antisemitism is often driven by the success of Jews. They outcompete Gentiles and end up with disproportionate power and money far beyond their numbers. That pisses people off. They ask, “How did they get all that power and money? They must have cheated.” Hence antisemitism.
Of course it doesn’t help when Israelis themselves write opinion pieces such as this one in Haaretz: “As Israeli professors in America, we are safe. Our students are safe. Israel, however, is in peril.”
This was written by a Guy Grossman and Mical Raz. I tried to provide the link but it doesn’t work.
“Jew” in the western world has become conflated with “High Status person playing the eliteness game.” This is unfortunate - there are historical reasons why this association has been made, but as we all know, when someone says “you are ‘this’ because you are a member of a group”, it is innately unfair - we are not identical to some simple description of a group. We’re individuals!
Plenty of non-Jews, who are High Status, play the “eliteness game”.
However, because Jews have been guests in non-Jewish cultures, for 2000 years, they have come to (unfortunately) view their High Status “elite game players” (remember, this is a minority of any Jewish population, but they invariably become the leaders of that population) as guardians against oppression from the majority culture. And, I am claiming (I could be wrong here) that the larger population of Jews have come to view the success of their eliteness game players as vital to the safety of the whole Jewish population.
But this assumption, if it exists at all, is completely at odds with reality. The “eliteness game” today completely precludes certain classes of people from participating, without telling those players that they’re being set up as scapegoats.
To the average Jew I would say you can no longer trust those, in your own “Jewish” community, who are playing the “eliteness” game. However, I believe, here in the US you have two self preserving options. One: become an American citizen and patriot who actively espouses and promotes the traditional virtues of American identity. Second: emigrate to Israel, and become an Israeli citizen and patriot who actively espouses and promotes the traditional virtues of Jewish religious practice.
If you depend on eliteness players, they will betray you.
PS - I am a Christian - if you’ve read this far I would say look into my favorite Jew - Jesus of Nazareth.
I am a non-Jewish American supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. I have a very dear friend in Chicago whose father and mother from Germany fled the Nazis in the 1930s and came to America where they built very successful lives. I sent my friend a note offering my apologies for what is happening in our country right now. He responded by thanking me for my support and mentioning how glad he is that his folks are gone and don’t have to go through this again. My rage knows no bounds. This is not an America that is worth saving if this is the best that it can do for its Jewish citizens. I don’t know what to do. I know one thing. I’m going to learn how to shoot and I’m going to acquire a firearm. When the civil authorities fail to protect or even actively harm a very vulnerable part of our community, what other alternative is there? God forbid, but the day may come in this country when the only alternative to a second Holocaust is an armed defense. I intend to be a part of it.
Jews can organize to defend themselves without the JDL. There are people who train synagogue security teams, all kinds of sophisticated training resources are already out there. The problem is most Jews have been dismissive of these efforts in the past. Perhaps now people will wake up, but I would not hold my breath. It just needs to be enough people to perform the function.
I am a Gentile Zionist, I speak out at every opportunity for the Jewish people and Israel. have always believed that diaspora Jews have to to speak up! It is even more essential now in order to counter the anti semitism that is evolving around the world like a plague. It has never been more important. All for Israel!!
Your support is much appreciated, Susan. I believe that Jews and Gentiles must speak out for Israel but, together, should also broaden our involvement to rid Western democracies of Islamo/Leftist controlled "woke" dogma that is manipulating and perverting our institutions (i.e. govt, academia, media - even the medical profession) This dogma includes false or misleading narratives about the following:
1) The so-called Palestinian people. The only ones who “victimized” them historically – and now – are their leaders in the Muslim world. Jews have never “occupied” their territory – land which was always indigenous to Jews and always disputed politically. Twice, Israel offered to relinquish territory to give them statehood. Twice they refused. Any policing actions by Israel were in response to attacks by the Palestinians themselves. Moreover Israel had no presence in Gaza since 2005, but the Oct 7 attacks on Israeli civilians had to change all that. The various lies associated with Israel and the Palestinians has led the “woke” crowd to dub Jews “oppressors”. The Islamic world has always called for our destruction – along with the persecution of Christians - and continues this now under the cover of “wokism”. Ironically, the barbarianism of the Islamic and Marxist worlds is well documented. It includes horrific purges on innocents and, in the case of the Islamists, many instances of the genocide of Christians, Jews and fellow Muslims. (I’ve been writing a paper about this and cannot believe how their atrocities are ignored by world leaders!)
2) Western civilization. The Islamo/Leftist alliance has a common goal: to destroy it. The postmodernism and critical theory/intersectionality taught by Marxist professors (and which is being adopted by our institutions) insists that our democratic systems are “systematically racist” and should be replaced by a system that favors “historically oppressed” people of color, LGBT and women. This has led, for example, to horrible DEI (Diversity/Equality/Inclusion) policies in academia and workplaces, where well-qualified white males are being passed over for hiring, promotion, grants, etc in favor of less qualified individuals who belong to the “historically oppressed” groups. In other words, it is racism. The fact is: all of the historical injustices have been addressed in Western countries via legislation. Some of it, many decades ago. But Marxism, by its nature, always needs to invent or exaggerate the grievances of various groups to foment division and strife. At the same time, Marxism seeks to destroy traditional sources of authority; namely the family and religion (notably, Christianity and Judaism which form the foundation of Western law). For the Islamists, who want Islam to be the sole world religion, working with Marxists has been helpful in the current “destabilizing stage” of the West. Certainly, if this unholy alliance wins the West their need to work together will be over and they will fight each other for dominance. For an interesting take on the Islamo/Leftist alliance (a.k.a. Red/Green Alliance) – including its incredibly long history – read historian Mark Cote’s article at https://providencemag.com/2023/11/the-new-red-green-alliance-1/

I meant frat boys.
