Nice sentiment at the end, but it is not going to happen for all the reasons given in the lines preceding the last paragraph. And the one before that is out of the question. Israel cannot afford to experiment with another Hamas government or any Palestinian government in Gaza. Nor in Judea and Samaria. Nor Hizbollah in Lebanon firing rockets daily. So this war will be a war to the finish and say goodbye to any Palestinian state west of the Jordan. What mayhem the other Arab states might want to entertain from Palestinian murderous desires is up to them. Of course the G7 leaders do not understand that, so they too will be responsible for the destruction that is going to ensue.
Because they have a different agenda, one that includes tossing Israel to the wolves. Thely are profoundly stupid, self-destructive, blinded by the gobbledygook they think erroneously passes for science, reason, and justice all rolled into one. They misunderstand modernity and that leads them to sabotage the society they do not understand but which has provided them with untold wealth and untold freedom and untold complexity. Unfortunately, the latte lis doing them in since they are not equipped to understand dit or handle it. Things are so bad that I have to admit it would be better if the USA had remained a Christian country, even if Jews were excluded form golf clubs.
…The Muslim brotherhood is a terrorist organization that also managed to provide actual aid to people. I cannot believe how low the bar has been set. The west has blood on its hands. Though it will never happen, absorption of Palestinians into Egypt and Lebanon along with a larger buffer into the 1967 land would be a better solution than a two state one. No other refugee problem has gone on this long and this deliberately with an exclusive group to tend to it. It’s not fair to call the descendants of refugees refugees once you reach the third generation that’s an absurdity. The refusal of Arab neighbors to absorb the Palestinians esp when the numbers hadn’t ballooned is evidence of what the truth is. It’s not about land. It’s about the Jews being there. The Arab lands were carved up pretty indiscriminately in terms of what was moral or politically sensible. They aren’t any more authentic than Israel. That the Kurds will never have a state that the Copts are truly an ancient but persecuted and shrinking people shows how counterfeit the indigenous people claim is. For some reason successive Muslim conquest including of non Arab people is glossed over as some fait accompli unworthy of discussion while Israel is derided as a colonial project. While Jews absolutely fared better under Arab rule in the Middle Ages they were second class citizens whereas the Arabs currently living as Israeli citizens are full citizens and most report being quite happy and grateful to be Israeli. Palestinians are third class citizens in Lebanon and yet Lebanon wants to criticize Israel?
The saddest aspect of this conflict imo is how much better Israeli Palestinian relations were before Arafat returned. If you read memri.org it isn’t difficult to see why Oct 7 happened. If the unrwa and whatever other bodies want to run schools like this it should be on their own dime. Money from places like Qatar will pour in. Israel must shine a spotlight on the curriculum. Right now whether the west likes it or not a meaningful plurality of Palestinians support terror. More so in the West Bank because they’re not defeated. Israel is already hamstrung. Mowing the lawn didn’t work and won’t work. A two state solution now would lead to all out war. I do not trust the west one bit to mediate this conflict. The west is in a state of purposeful delusion.
You cannot take a fake and invented identity seriously that is not one culture or one people but based on only one common goal: the destruction of Israel and killing all Jews. The so called palestinians are a death cult that is based on a blatant lie. This cult should never get a state as it is morally wrong and does not make any sense. These people are different clans and tribes and just Arabs from the region, not "Palestinians"! As long as they won't admit who they actually are, there will never be peace. They never wanted a state and never will want one as their goal is not to build a state but to destroy Israel. They lie about their intent just to get money from all over the world so they can kill more Jews and live forever on benefits. Their morals are rotten to the core. Their idea is rotten to the core. Their lie is rotten to the core. Until the world and those so called Palestinians won't admit this truth there won't be any peace for Israel.
Thanks Vicky Cohn. I agree totally for the same reasons. The only fault as such with the essay is that it perpetually labels the said identity group as "Palestinians". For the purposes of public writing and communication that 'group' needs to be only referred to as "So-called-palestinians". The term 'west bank' needs to be eradicated and only referred to by the proper ESTABLISHED historic names of "Judea and Samaria".
There will Never be peace between Israel and the so called Palestinians. Israel has tried everything in its power to accommodate this. Hamas DOES NOT WANT PEACE! The rest of the world has got to get its head around this.
Thank you. Concise. Clear. Honest. Informed. Share the love. And arm yourselves. We're only in the very beginning stages of a convolution of several wars. The main warlords are simply playing the liberal-minded 'west' for the patsies they/we are. Quite straight forward really. I'm not saying that something cosmic could not ruin their plans/hopes/scheduling adjustments. But until such a profound event i.e. series of events occurs - until further notice the Convoluted Wars have only entered the simple, easy, lite phases. Hussain as usual you've done your best, which is great. Thank you and get prepared.
As noted in 2 other comments above - I do not support referring to the so-called identity group as "Palestinians". I think it is well past time to only refer to that 'group' as "So-called-palestinians". Additionally, I think that 'west bank' should no longer be used and that the actual names of "Judea and Samaria" are the only true, honest, and appropriate names for those historic areas.
I think the world is a better place without American democracy building. The people tasked with this have a benighted understanding of other cultures. It’s a fool’s errand. Building a democracy where no civil society structures exist to counteract an unelected government is an impossibility. There’s an old joke about people deserving their democracy good and hard and the same applies to tyranny. It is unfortunately embedded in the human condition including in the west to sacrifice freedom for other impulses including to take it from others. Covid brought out despotic urges in many people. Freedom and democracy are the not the norm for most of human history and require prolonged cultivation. In a decent world which we do not live in, Hamas would be isolated. Aid would not flow from the west in the way it does with the knowledge that Hamas runs deeply anti semitic schools, constantly recruits civilians, terrorizes others and uses aid mostly to build a military machine and enrich themselves. The Muslim brotherhood is a terrorist organization that also managed to provide actual aid to people. I cannot believe how low the bar has been set. The west has blood on its hands. Of course Israel can build a State for the Palestinians, the Israeli's did exactly that with the foundation of the country in 1948, a State with equal rights for Jews and non- Jews.
In other words, a non- tribal State in contrast with all its neighbouring Arab countries.
Tribalism doesn't exactly inspire to compromise, the essence of democracy.
That's why I deplore Israel didn't have the audacity in 1967 to simply annex the Westbank: bring all its inhabitants under Israeli rule of law, preferably in a Confederate structure.
The tribal structure of the Westbank region would have been replaced by a model of pacification, which has a proven record in many an European or American country.
No, they cannot, any more than you can create a career for your child. Israel can give them the opportunity to build their own state, but that is the most it can do (and given that they have gone down that path for 30 years and it has failed, I prefer the Netanyahu approach: make peace with the various Arab states. Deal with the Palestinians after that.

Too many Arabs. It would have ended the ability of Israel to be a Jewish state. Look at what happened to Lebanon as a result of that approach.

In 1979 the British handed Rhodesia to Mugabe even as they KNEW exactly what would happen. They know. Ask yourself why they would do it anyway.

The terms “settlers” and ”occupied” have to go, too.
Because the Palestinians refused a state 5 times before now.

How do you write this piece wkrhooaddressing the fact that Israel also has no interest in a 2-state solution?

Where does one turn when compassion, kindness, generosity and real assistance have not worked? Is the solution to try the opposite?
It’s clear that Israel cannot live next to the people whose charter is to annihilate them.
