The "contradiction" between religion and science is mostly a product of the Christian Reformation. Protestants accused Catholics of blocking technological process; Catholics became so afraid of another Reformation that they indeed feared any scientific challenge to the status-quo. In the Jewish world and the Islamic Golden Age, on the other hand, very devout people were also scientists.
Rambam (Maimonides) was the prime example: one of the greatest Rabbis ever, and the greatest scientist of his time, employing the rational scientific method to become a wondrous physician serving kings!
Maybe. The anti-science stance of the Christian Church is much exaggerated and much debunked by some scholars (eg David Bentley Hart). Modern science does however owe its genesis to the worldview gifted to European Christian thinkers by Judaism. Makes perfect sense that a biblically backed worldview would allow you to understand & engage with the creation tho huh? Yeah ok, assumes one actually accepts ‘The Creation’ in the first place, but even for those who may not, it’s a pretty big coincidence to ignore. Don’t see too many Muslims in the Nobel Science annals do we???
I found this article to be pertinent and relevant to the dilemma we have before us of more superficially layered thinking, answering to a preferred model that ignores nuance, replacing the necessary tested thought processes of slower, mistake-laden findings coming to fruition. Although, of course, as new knowledge is gained findings can change.
It is lovely to consider the fact that science, religion, art of all kinds, are interconnected, not necessarily separated out as some would have it. I believe there is a symmetry to the animate and inanimate world that is all of a piece. Thank you for your discussion.
This unbroken chain of respect for the Life of the Mind, and the power of Thought to make life so much better for Human beings, through Truth and Ethics and Military Strength, has its origin in Early societies in the belief that in the deepest sense Rationality is Divine, and therefore must be preserved at all costs. This idea is attributed to Plato, but is present in Jewish, Arab and Greek thought at the time. The Wisdom, of Mathematics and Ethics and Legal systems as well as Religion, of these societies was preserved in the Values of The Catholic Church which systematically preserved this knowledge in The Vatican Library. Without The Church, and The Jewish Rabbinical Tradition, there is some doubt what became Civilisation in The West would even be in the form we are today.
