So the world ignored the land which God had given to Israel in order to appease the Arabs? Well that went well. God removed from the British their great empire, allowed them to become nothing but a little island with not much political clout and they are still appeasing the Arabs while the country turns slowly but surely into another Islamist state, and the politicians are still to blind to see…. My poor country…..
Everyone including the USA had an opportunity to save Jews - Shanghai took Jews in (for a price) the western countries? They didnt do it., years of Jew hatred from the Romans - 250 CE - Christians and Muslims was so ingrained they all kept quiet - perhaps hoping that once and for all we would be annihilated by Hitler and his many collaborators. Thousands of Jews did survive because thousands of non Jewish individuals in several countries helped and / or hid Jews - but the churches, the governments and institutions? Nothing. Jan Karski spoke about this many times. At least the UK had their kindertransport - two politicians in the US tried to do the same for 20 K Jewish children in Germany however the American antisemities shot it down and it never even reached a vote. After all they had their German American Bund - doing their sieg heils in NYC while training with the KKK. I am a gen # 2 - many family members including my paternal grandparents - and entire family members (uncles, aunts cousins) with children were wiped out. My maternal side also had many losses - one uncle even went down with the ship the MV Struma, on their way to the British Mandate from Romania -my oma and opa and mother fled Germany after the Nuremberg Laws were passed - on a quota visa.
Israel became a state too late for my family and six million other families. Two out of every three Jews in Europe were murdered. Let that sink in. Today most countries try to lie and distort their complicity in the murders. The same people who do not support Israel today are most likely the descendants of those who murdered our families, or turned their heads. Even those who claim to support us are suspect as to their real agendas - for me personally, its difficult to even believe anyone - Forget not, that Hitler and the "grand mufti" of Jerusalem met in Berlin and discussed murdering all of us. Today? Todah L'El For Midinat Yisrael - either you are with us or not, we are not going anywhere.
My Mother hid on Krystalnacht & witnessed the whole incident. My Father lived on a farm which of course was taken. He came to America his sister to UK then S. America. My Uncle & Grandparents didn’t get out. Others left for Israel.
A Cousin opened the first zoo in Tel Aviv.
My Father became a Sargent in the Army.
I’m glad my Parents aren’t around to see the scum in DC.
Yes pretty much the profile isn't it? - they were all scattered, in a perfect world where Jews were respected and not persecuted by the majorities - we would have lived down the street from each other. I agree my late parents would be rolling over, if they saw the sieg heils rendered at rallys by wealthy and entitled fools.
The Antisemitism from the British, most of Europe and especially, my homeland in Canada, is so disgusting, that it's hard to believe that history has taught them all nothing. They are buying into the Palestinian lies, even though they are quite familiar with actual facts, straight out of history. They know these are lies, but they have all been threatened by the Arab world. In my honest opinion, sorry for being blunt, but The United Kingdom and any other country that is complicit in the murders of innocent Israelis and Jews in the Diaspora, are getting what they deserve. Israel has done so much to change their ways, since many years ago, by accommodating many different societies and peoples, Jewish and not, to improve the country, but nobody seems to care. There are approximately 2.1 million Arabs in Israel, all with equal rights, something not given to them in their own countries of origin, as well as Druze, Christians, Baha'is, etc. The queer, Trans and Gay communities all have rights that they would never have, anywhere else in the world, where Muslims exist. We cannot allow the world to keep lying about us, just because they are too afraid of the Muslim Extremists of the Muslim Brotherhood, but also, their true agenda of hatred towards Jews and Israelis, just because of who we are. We are not going anywhere and it's up to us to spread our 'Tikkun Olam', repairing the world, as much as we possibly can. Nobody is going to do it for us, so we need to unite and do it together. We can still help make the world a much better place. Amen.
British Guiana was not the Promised Land. But as independent Guyana, it did have a Jewish president, Janet Rosenberg Jagan, from 1997 to 1999. She followed her late husband, Cheddi Jagan, a long time political leader in the country.
It's confounding that nations actually wanted to rid themselves of a peaceful, intelligent and industrious Jewish people that could support themselves while other nations refused to allow them in. Why wouldn't you want to better your society?
With war clouds gathering over Europe, Chamberlain told Cabinet members, “it was of immense importance… to have the Moslem world with us. If we must offend one side, let us offend the Jews.”
Such an informative article. Thank you. I confess to crying as I read with disbelief the appalling attitude towards the “Jewish problem”. Some things never change.
I'm not Jewish, but I find this Substack interesting, as an antidote to the one-sided nature of coverage against Israel.
I am strongly in favour of a supermajority Jewish state. I support Israel now that it has been created.
That being said, part of me does wish that somewhere else more remote and less populated could have been found, so there wasn't constant conflict in the region.
But Palestine was their first choice, and they got it. Other candidates for settlement are just a historical curiosity.
Various schemes for Jewish colonization. What about Juden Savanne in neighboring Suriname?
Australia's far west in the prelude to WWII. Came as a revelation that other ships than the ST Louis searched for ports of entry in Central America. Some Jews reached Bolivia. As noted Shanghai. Dominican Republic's Sosua. Birobibizhan's Soviet masters refused Jewish refugees. Crimea after the Revolution was a budding Jewish homeland till Lenin and cohorts changed their minds and destroyed it all. Maybe too nice for Jews...better they should be sent to a marshland on China's border. It's a miracle that Jews found refuge anywhere and they some managed to break the British stranglehold on Jews entering the Mandate territory.
Thank you for writing this. I was unaware of most of these details. I only knew there was some debate pre-WWII about "where to put the Jewish people" (...for lack of a better way to phrase it. I'm trying to convey my impression of how those involved in the debate seemed to be thinking.). It's strange to me that the Bible was until relatively recent times the most widely read book by educated "Westerners," yet, they ignored the Biblical history and God's promise to the Jewish people regarding the Promised Land.

Is that the gan chayot (zoo) off of Rehov Hakalir in Tel Aviv? I used to take my oldest son there in the mid 1970s.
You said it: “either you are with us or not, we are not going anywhere.”
Oren good job!!! Todah rabah. I should have thanked you first - before I wrote a response - age does that to one I suppose. shabbat shalom

Thanks for the history lesson.
