In economic terms the $3.9b of aid to Israel is essentially a welfare (aid) money for American defense industry and is returned to American economy in the form of employment, taxes, local development etc. since, as you indicated all of it has to be spend with US defense contractors who are getting easy, paid for orders for their wares bypassing regular and difficult US budgetary controls and constrains. In addition they get free quality control, testing,, ,modifications, know how and marketing in the form of reputation of the product deployed by Israeli military . Value of all of it combined , if properly accounted for probably exceeds $3.9 B .
General - I appreciate this article very much. Lots of good info. I have been leaning toward Israel becoming less dependent on the U.S. (I must admit that the thought of hearing the military industrial complex cry about it was strangely satisfying). But you make a lot of excellent points about how beneficial the U.S.-Israel partnership has been and can be going forward. I do want the "handout" metaphor to stop. I'm so tired of it.
I'm no expert on weaponry, but while we in the U.S. keep hearing about the nuclear deterrent issue, isn't non-nuclear the real issue? Things like drones, surveillance, etc.? Israel nuclear deterrents can't be much of a real-life deterrent because Israel isn't crazy enough to use them right there in the Middle East, right? As for Iran, Israel has to monitor Iran closely and constantly and take action as appropriate, maybe even just assassinating a few key players? We keep assuming that cease fires enable the terrorists to keep rearming, but perhaps they also enable Israeli reservists to return home and develop day-to-day weapons more quickly?

I would love to see a continuous program of assassinations: political leaders, scientists, Iranian Guard leaders, maybe business leaders if there are any. Israel has limited strategic importance for the US. Israeli claims that Israel and the US have many major mutual security interests are false. Hamas and Hezbollah are not a serious threat to the US. Iran is a general threat to many countries, not just the US and Israel, but the level of threat to the US from Iran is still nowhere near the same as with Israel. Israel now has the financial means to purchase armaments on its own, without financial assistance from the US, just like Germany, Japan, South Korea, etc., and that is the arrangement the US should have with Israel now.

American voters, beyond being tired of endless wars oceans away that have chewed up trillions of dollars and thousands of young American lives, are smart enough to know, after the Iraq fiasco, that accomplishing regime change in a country as large as Iran will inevitably entail boots on the ground - most of them American boots - and that such a war will once again be massively expensive in terms of American lives and treasure, all of it in order to achieve a goal that does not, regardless of what its supporters may claim, perceptibly enhance the security of the North American continent where those voters actually live. No, Iran does not yet have nuclear weapons, is not on the verge of having them, and more importantly does not and will not for many years have the capability of putting them on ICBMs and sending them thousands of miles through the stratosphere to places like New York or Chicago.
