Savages come in all shapes and sizes. Educated savages, professional savages, barbarian savages, ignorant savages, all driven by hatred looking for an object to hate. They find virtuous reasons for their hate but its still hate.

The bogus 19th century “science” of “race” that became the foundation for Nazism was also developed in universities, spread by “educated” people and considered virtuous in its time. And here we are again, the Jews, at the sharp end of the stick.

The core of the anti-Israel movement is to deny Israelis and Jews, in general, the right to even exist. These protestants, not the religion, are people looking for something to protest and right now attacking Jews is the latest example of their mental irrationality. I say this noting that climate change screaming has been displaced by Jewish and Israel hatred.

As dreadful as all of this is, it was apparently there well before 10/7. As such, it is reality. It is better that we all clearly see the magnitude of this problem than pine for a return to the previous state of affairs. This is real. We can try to convince others of the correctness of our position, we can try to change the structure of the US education system to address this or we can accept it and take appropriate defensive measures, including but not limited to leaving. That's pretty much it.

While I agree with the contents of this article, I find the problem with the article is that its preaching to the choir about things we are in agreement with for a long time. It is my belief that antisemitic behavior cannot in most cases be eradicated from a person's belief system because its part of their basic personality. I do think that if we face it head on and cause these people to be ostracized and penalized to such a extent that they are looked on by the majority of people as the dregs of society we can at the very least control it to the point where they cease to pose a physical threat to Jews no matter where they live in the West. Asking them to apologize is fruitless and self defeating because it does not change their core beliefs. We as Jews have to make their lives by use of the existing laws as miserable as possible.

What an important essay -- breathtaking! It helped me to see that we've entered a new phase of battle with the enemy. The first phase was their effort to circumvent the framework of human rights protection, to find ways to infiltrate and wreak havoc. This second phase involves taking over the role the defenders. The immune system which was developed to restrain antisemitism has been infiltrated and is being subverted to turn on benign agents.

Compassion itself is being high-jacked and transformed into a lethal force. It's been a while since I've read anything this deeply disturbing.

If you're referring to the federal government defunding Harvard, no one is defunding scientific research. Harvard has a 50-billion-dollar endowment. They can choose to use that vast amount of money for scientific research. Purging antisemitism from universities does not in any way amount to empathicide. International scholars should be vetted before being allowed in.

"If the fight against antisemitism becomes an excuse to indiscriminately defund scientific research or blanketly purge international scholars, then empathy has not been restored; it has been corrupted. That, too, is empathicide".

I agree with the preaching to the choir part of this... Like it's important to have the words and the mental framework to describe the problem but that does not therefore lead to solutions.

However I'm not sure that it's a basic part of people's personality...
