The French will rue this departure, which I heartily support. My dear departed husband Rabbi Mordecai Kieffer said that Europe does not deserve the Jews. He is correct. The French economy will suffer because of the Jews leaving. We have been kicked out of many countries, all of which suffered economically as a result. Look at Germany after WW II. Ruined. Wrecked. Had to be rescued by the Americans and their Marshall Plan. Have you noticed the outpouring of gratitude from the rulers of the European nations? Hopeless. I am amazed that people can’t see what has happened right before their eyes. Finally after paying an unspeakable price, the Jews were able to capture Israel/Judea again. Seven Arab nations attacked the next day. The Israelis were few. Many of them were refugees from the Shoah (Holocaust), frail and undernourished. They had very few weapons. It looked hopeless. Jews from the Diaspora rallied and did what they could, but against seven Arab nations? But, guess what? The Jews, the Israelis won the unprovoked war. This scenario has been repeated again and again ad nauseum. And who wins? Not easily or gladly. With misery, because the Israelis are forced to fight the Arabs, which means a lot of people are killed. Men, women and children. Israelis are decent people. The soldiers are husbands and fathers and sons and also wives, mothers and daughters. It causes the soldiers unending pain when they have to kill other people in order for Israel to survive. Jews have been through many centuries of suffering and oppression. That they have survived, when the ancient kingdoms and empires who reviled them have gone to dust, is a miracle. A miracle. And who or what ( depending upon your philosophy) is in charge of miracles? People have been trying to get rid of the Jews for thousands of years. Do you ever wonder why the Jews are still here? Read about the wonder that Judaism is. The way Jews have been obeying the Torah (Bible) and having a good time doing it even with all the suffering. We have something very precious. A holy Covenant with HaShem (God). We entered the Covenant at the foot of Mt Sinai in the desert when God gave us the Torah, which, by the way, contains 613 commandments. Some of which we can no longer obey because they have to do with the Holy Temple that the Romans destroyed in 70 AD when they kicked the Jews out of their homeland. However we do our best, at least a proportion of us do, to obey the ones that are left. Just fyi. I just wish that people would stop with this insane hatred of Jews. Please. What does it take?

Alison's avatar

I am a Protestant Gentile, but I appreciate the Jews and always have. Certainly obeying God's laws given in the Torah will bring about a better life, because God's ways are always higher and better than man's ways. Where Christians have taken God's law seriously, they have prospered. Where they have ignored them, they have suffered. However, the problem we all have is that we have not kept God's law perfectly. Originally, God provided a system of animal sacrifices to atone for the sins of His people, but that was only temporary. He promised to send a perfect Lamb to take away the sins of the world, and that happened when Jesus came. He came for the Jews first, but also for the Gentiles (I am one, and I am eternally grateful for that!) We all need a Saviour, Jew and Gentile alike. He is yours as much as ours. May you all be blessed!

Justin's avatar

Please, just leave us alone.

Alison's avatar

Sorry you find it offensive to be blessed and prayed for, Justin.

Justin's avatar

I'm offended that while we're being murdered, attacked, and harassed, and trying to be proud Jews, you're trying to get us to forsake our Jewishness. That's what I'm offended about.

You can't relate. I don't expect you to get the pain. Stop trying to change us. I'll speak to you plainly.

Penelope Oppenheimer's avatar

He is not offended by your good intentions, if I may be bold and speak for him. He is just asking the people who hate us to please leave us be. We are doing our best. Of course, we are only human. We are trying to be good Jews, most of us, according to our own lights, but we are trying to survive. I know that is hard to understand. Go live in Israel for a while and maybe you might begin to understand. We have been under attack by the Arabs and others since 1948, and it wasn’t easy before that. Israel is only a small part of the planet. We do not want to fight about it any longer. Many Arabs live as full citizens in Israel, seemingly quite happily, or they would leave. And I am sure some have. It is a free democratic country. Hallelujah! There are many Arab countries. Millions of Arabs live there. The poor Gazans were left alone by the Israelis years ago. All the Jewish Israelis who had settled in Gaza and built houses and schools and synagogues and clinics were forced to leave by the Israeli government. The Arabs had their own state. Were they happy? Well? They continued to lob bombs into Israel. They had an intifada during which they blew up busses in which were children, women and men. They blew up busy markets, ditto. Need I elaborate? Surely some of you remember. It was and is tragic. Now the people in Gaza need rescuing, but not from the Israelis, who continue to provide for them in many ways and have always done, but from whom? Hamas. Hamas tortures the people, steals the food and supplies and money other nations including Israel, of course, send to Gaza, and the poor Arabs voted for them. Back when Gaza was a free democracy. It is unbelievably sad. And most of the people in the world do not understand. Probably that is the saddest part. I feel sorry for God. What a mess! Thank God, though, because we need his help. Obviously the humans are too ……. What can one say? I don’t want to insult us, but what can one say? Keep praying!!!

Penelope Oppenheimer's avatar

Dear Alison, one more comment. We Jews do have a Saviour and have had for three thousand years. He is God. HaShem. And many other names. One God, many names. He has been saving us for thousands of years, which is why we sing his praises and say prayers of thanksgiving constantly.

Alison's avatar

Yes, He is indeed our Saviour, and the only Saviour from sin.

It's over for France.

I'll never forget that in the shadow of the Charlie Hebdo murders, the French marched in the streets, wearing "Ju suis Charlie!" t-shirts, but I never saw one single person after the Jewish murders that followed wearing a Ju suis Juif T-shirt.

France is also the country that gave sanctuary to Yassir Arafat's family. They made their alliance with Muslims decades ago, partly to ensure plenty of oil from opec countries.

Now, there are "no-go" zones is Paris, ruled by islamists, where the police will neither patrol nor intervene.

Eric R.'s avatar

And also gave sanctuary to Khomeini

John Galt III's avatar

The French also gave sanctuary to Haj Amin al-Husseini - Hitler's favorite Muslim - who was responsible for the murder of the 400,000 Hungarian Jews late in WWII. That was after massacres in the British run Palestine Mandate when he was Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Did I mention he was a relative of Yasser Arafat?

After Charlottesville, "Jews will not replace us" BLM!!!!!! Not one "we are all Jews" t shirts at any protest. No signal at all to the Jewish community "we stand with you" If any very muted. After Oct. 7 CELEBRATION at all the university campuses. and BLM!!!!! and freee freeeepalestine. Ugh.

You are absolutely right that thieves and killers don't deserve our admiration and respect no matter how well-dressed they are. But this makes it even more painful to watch France going down the drain. Along with the abysmal failure of the French to become decent human beings there stands one of the world's great cultures. Second only to the Italians, the French have a great love of beauty and freedom of thought. To the French we owe many of the hallmarks and important milestones of our liberal, secular culture all the way from Gargantua wiping his ass with a goose, to Montaigne's essays, to Voltaire, to the Impressionists, to the Moulin Rouge. So, it pains me to see France commit suicide and watch one the bulwarks of Western civilization become gradually covered by desert sands

Yes. But that was the past.

I have a friend who lives in the Chapelle-Pajol area and visit her at intervals. It is by no means a no-go zone in the daytime or early evening.

The corresponding section of Boulevard de la Chapelle is a haunt of drug and cigarette dealers, but that is a different problem entirely.

No apology necessary. Your post says it all. You are someone who reads a post making an excellent point and yet can't do anything other than criticize a tiny typing error. You got me!

Ann K Sterzinger's avatar

Ya did it twice, kiddo. You don’t get to rate your own point as « excellent » when you’ve already blown your own credibility. You have no idea who is marching around wearing what in the streets of France when you don’t know the first thing about the language. I doubt you’ve ever even been here except maybe to go shopping on the Champs-Elysées with the girls. The Internet is full of people blabbing about shit they know nothing about and I see no need to let you add to the shitpile.

There is one community in France that is a danger to the Jews here and it ain’t the French.

Before I read this essay, I had no idea of the historical dastardliness of the French. After all of the Jews are gone and the Islamists take over, the star and crescent will be flying from the Eiffel Tower and the pretty girls at the Moulin Rouge will be dancing in full length burkkahs. May they be happy with their choice.

A very interesting well written historical review, than you. Increasingly it seems moving to Israel is becoming the only viable way to be part of a positive society with a clear sense of identity as a homeland. The West has lost that and effectively excludes Jews from being part of a multicultural society.

Hopefully they will stop coming to Canada, now the worst Jew hating country in the English speaking world, where the Liberal government is complicit in the incitement of Jew hatred, with a huge uptick since the Irish Catholic Carney, became PM, who himself incites hatred, and has absolutely ignores the violence including arson, shootings, physical assaults, Jew hunts with machetes, while the police all look on as they are designated the bodyguards and buddies of the jihadists, and not the victims, the Jews. Courts have thrown out all but a single digit of the ones indeed arrested which is probably less than 1% of those breaking the hate crime laws. He has attempted to use the Jew hatred to unify the 2 million Muslims, most who have poured in since the Liberal came to power, seemingly mostly unvetted, despite coming from the worst radical areas of the ME and Asia, despite warnings from Canadian intelligence services. His famous statemet that he announced to the nation, was that "Muslim values are Canadian values". Yes, indeed, including I assume Sharia law, multiple wives, and all the rest. Why? He desperately needs them to vote as a bloc for the Liberal Party, which used to be centre and now has become France, Ireland, Spain and Italy all wrapped in one.

I think it depends where. I should have said I left Toronto in 2020 and it's much better in small towns. However, we're not practicing Jews who are part of a Jewish community so we can kind of disappear and stay under the radar. I worry more for my elderly mother who lives in a Jewish area and is very much a part of her synagogue. For lots of reasons we have residency in Mexico and Panama so we've got places to go if things in Canada become worse (in every way, not just because of Jew hate).

Bonnie Geller's avatar

Not anymore. I have a family member working at the U of Saskatchewan and it is actually worse because there is a tiny population of Jews, and thus everyone is in the frontlines of the Jew hatred. On campus, they have had to make a Jewish network, which meets secretly wth the local rabbi assisting. Many who work for the U of S are terrified to be known as Jews, even before Oct. 7, so one can imagine how the fear has ramped up. Parents have to do shmira for the after school, Hebrew school, so they can phone the police immediately if they see anything suspicious occurring. This is happening from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to Vancouver Island, in comparatively small cities in Canada.

Canadasceptic's avatar

The universities are the epicentre of Jew hate so I'm not surprised. I lived through Israel Apartheid Week at York U in the early 2000s and left academia before things got as bad as you describe.

If you're visibly Jewish or spend time in Jewish schools or institutions you're not really safe anywhere in Canada. I just watched a podcast with a Norwegian Jew and he said that Jews in Norway can exist but not live, which I thought was an apt distinction and probably applies here as well. In Oslo one cannot wear a kippah or a Star of David without assuming a great deal of risk. Jewish kids have armed guards at the Jewish school and it's the most guarded building in Norway. I really do recommend that people have a Plan B. It's not my phrase but it resonated: when you see a tsunami coming the only thing you can do is get out of the way. We have options today that weren't open to the Jews of Europe in the 1930s.

You can throw in the new American Pope who not so subtly has joined the anti-semitic sweepstakes. Such a proud tradition of the Vatican save the 50 year pause beginning with Pope John in the 1960's until after Pope John Paul early in the 2000's. who were true friends of the Jewish people.

Most Americans only know about the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion of Jews inn 1492, followed by the Portuguese one. Few know the first expulsion in Europe was in the 12 century by the French. This piece by Ms. Brodsky was thorough and accurate. However, what was missing was the completion of where the Jews went.

Yes, Germany was a destination, but it was Bolestaw, the Duke of Sandomierz who saw an opportunity when the Jews were wandering eastward after France's expulsion and welcomed them to Poland knowing the prowess of the Jewish people in bringing economic success to places they had settled and so it was. The Jewish population exploded in Poland between the 1300's and 1900's to over 3 million before the Holocaust. 10% of the entire population of Poland at the beginning of World War II was Jewish. No wonder the industrial killing factories of the Jewish people of Europe was placed there by the Nazis of Germany murdering 90% of Polish Jews during the Shoah.

It is well documented and mentioned by Ms. Brodsky that the Germans didn't need to push Vichy France into doing their dirty work for them. Even the Germans were surprised not at the French complicity, but both there active willingness and enthusiasm in the roundups and transport to the death camps. So, France has a proud history of Jew hatred.

Macron and other French (throw in the English, as well) politicians have made the Faustian bargain with the devil, trading their Jews for Muslim votes and we would be fools in America to believe it can't happen here, as well.

An independent observer's avatar

Thank you. I have to admit I was completely ignorant about Jewish expulsion from France and only knew about Spain and Portugal. French persecution of Jews over centuries is not such a common knowledge for some reason.

I can only add that French were not the only people during WWII who willingly rounded up their Jewish population. Poles, Ukrainians, Latvians. Belorussians, you named them, were all too happy to get rid of thier Jewish neighbors. There was no shortage of volunteers, and Germans didn’t have to dirty their hands. In that regard, French were not unique.

Excellent assay by Ms Brodsky.

The unchill filtered Zionist's avatar

Yes. You have further enhanced the discussion and indictment of all of Europe, not to leave out Romania and Hungary which were responsible for murdering over one million Jewish people in a single year of which over 20 were my direct descendants from May of 1944- April 1945…….with the lonely exception, Denmark, which actively saved their Jews, and we must recognize the righteous Gentiles spread across Europe many who are named at Yad VaShem in Jerusalem.

France, like much of Western Europe, has decided to replace its Jewish population with ever increasing hordes of anti-Western Jew hating Muslims. This is what is behind the modern incidents. And while the Jews will leave and start a new life where they aren't under threat to the same extent, the French people will remain to become the new targets as their elected leaders continue to protect and promote Islam at the cost of civil society.

The ethnic cleansing of Jews from Europe is almost complete. If Europeans cared, then they would do something about it. Their inaction speaks volumes. I doubt the Europeans will miss their Jews. But I am certain that the Europeans will continue to blame the Jews for their woes, even after all the Jews are gone.

An independent observer's avatar

You are right. Jewish presence is not a necessary condition for them to remain scape goats. Or even for celebration of Jewish culture!

There are no Jews in Poland - almost none, but there are antisemitic graffiti. And Krakow makes good profit from an annual Jewish festival, where tourists from all over the world buy Jewish souvenirs and listen to Klezmer music. Guess what is the most popular souvenir? “Lucky Jew" - a small figurine of an orthodox Jewish man with a coin. The current number of Jewish residents in Krakow is under 1,000. The Jewish revival is happening without Jews LOL. Because that’s how they prefer it. I think Europe will feel liberated when it gets rid of its Jews. Again.

Whizjet's avatar

The refusal of the Western world to acknowledge the truth about even modern Jewish & Israeli history seems literally incredible.

The penchant for senior Western politicians not to refute the lies told by antisemitic ‘antizionists’ is inexplicable.

Why would Starmer - for example - not make any speeches regarding the legality of Eretz Israel?

Why would he not openly accuse the ‘Palestinian’ concept of being what it is - fiction?

Why would he not “J’Accuse” the clear, present and obvious genocidal ambitions of Hamas, Hezbollah etc?

The answer lies in the truth.

As Sherlock said:

“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains... must be the truth."

And the truth is that being Corbyn’s No 2 was no coincidence when it came to antisemitism.

I am heartily ashamed of my country for so many reasons, but Starmer’s tacit support for the antisemites is one of the main reasons.

I'm a bit of a Franco phile even with the sorry history you recount ....and for that reason I'm hoping that the French Jews can rebound and recover from the past 3 or 4 years of hate....wishful thinking. Since DeGaulle had the gaul to make his racist comment about Jews directly after the Six Day War...which I remember ....it's been downhill for France's relations with Jews....Israel in particular. Jews are moving to Germany from former USSR. How a Jew lives in Germany, I can't fathom. My friend asked me would I visit. "NO" I'd have to have a very compelling reason to go. Do I have any interest in visitng the former Pale of settlement .....Ukraine....not at all. What's that place have to do with my current American Jewish identity?

How Jewish is Zelensky? So France, I spent a summer in Avignon learning French.....attended a Shabbat service at the synagogue. Have been to various regions of France.....always have a great time....friendly people for the most part....wearing a Jewish symbol...a kippah ....maybe not so friendly.....especially if Muslim. So French Jews....if you come here, you've got the racist mayor of NYC who openly backs anti Jewish demonstrations outside synagogues. If I go to Israel I have the crazed Haredi calling Israeli police "nazi" Jewish people survive all....even our own Jewish self haters and anti Zionists who receive cheers and ovations at Oscars and Cannes....that's the world we live in.
