My question is why American Jews and even many Israelis assume the Diaspora consists of American Jews, and those outside of the US are carbon copies of American Jews in every way possible. The American Jews are incredibly different from the rest of the Diaspora, and it is disgusting to assume that Jews like me outside of the US are carbon copies of a very highly assimilated American Jewish population, with Reform , a social action movement with a tinge of Judaism as the major Jewish sect of non-Haredi in the US. Reform is negligible in the rest of the Diaspora and it has had hugely negative effects on American Jewry, with its decades long demonization of Israel and religious Jews, thus brainwashing their children and youth for decades, and their standing up for every minority including those who want to kill Jews, but refusing to standing up for Jews unless they worship Marx and their religion is Jew hating Progressivism. Due to total assimilation, and intermarriage, how many younger Jews are there left in the US other than the religious Jews, that actually identify fully as Jewish and not those who use the label Jew only to attack the Jewish community in the US?

Because the vast VAST majority of Diaspora Jews are in America. Here is a partial country list of numbers of Jews in each country:

North America

United States – ~6,300,000

Canada – ~400,000

Europe

France – ~438,500

United Kingdom – ~313,000

Germany – ~125,000

Russia – ~123,000–165,000

Netherlands – ~35,000

Belgium – ~29,000

Italy – ~26,800

Switzerland – ~20,500

Sweden – ~14,900

Spain – ~13,000

Austria – ~10,300

Hungary – ~45,000

Ukraine – ~32,000

Actually these figures are seem to show selective cherry-picking to boost the Ashkenazi Weltanschauung, omits many Jewish communities (eg major bases in southern hemisphere) and is probably overcounting non halachic subjects.

Dana Ramos's avatar

I noted it was a partial list, and you can google or AI the same and additional questions about where the Jewish Diaspora is if you want to see.

Liat Kirby's avatar

Having the vast majority of Diasporic Jews in America doesn't mean one can assume anything at all about Jews living elsewhere. Every Jew matters. Every community of Jews matters. We are all coloured by where we live and difference prevails.

Exactly. The rest of the diaspora is negligible by comparison. Metro NYC has 1.4 million Jews. My city metro Detroit has 72,000.

Bonnie Geller's avatar

What people call Jews in the US are not usually Jews at all according to Jewish law.

Clarity Seeker's avatar

Thx for the stats . I often have wondered about this.

Bonnie Geller's avatar

Actually the person omitted anyone not living in Europe or Ashkenazi. Thus the numbers are skewed. As they say statistics can be made to show anything. Plus who is considered Jewish in the US is often not considered according to Jewish law or Israel. So omit at least half or more from the US.

Bonnie Geller's avatar

I did not realize Jews only exist in the West and there are non Jews elsewhere. That is news to me. I assume you will be shocked to learn that the majority of Jews in Israel are actually Mizrachi and Sephardim. Just because most so-called Jews outside of Israel are located in the US, does not mean we are carbon copies of you, in the rest of the Diaspora. In fact, numbers are meaningless. What you may refer to as Jews in the US other than Dati are often people who happen to have a grandfather or father as Jewish and have not converted to Judaism, or Marxists who have denounced Judaism, or have become Buddhists, Hara Krishnas, Hindus, and other religions or cults that they have taken as their own.

Dana Ramos's avatar

? Jews do not exist only in the West. They are in virtually every country. I only posted the countries where the most Jews are outside of Israel. There are Indian Jews in India, Chinese Jews, and on and on.

Bonnie Geller's avatar

Yes, there are. As I said, numbers do not count as how many in the US are actually Jewish as defined by Jewish law? Other than the Dati, probably not even half, thanks to total assimilation and intermarriage where the mother does not convert.

Dana Ramos's avatar

oh, I see what you mean, now. I misunderstood.

it is a strange and recurring phenomenon that the dead white guy Karl Karx with his verbose, unproved theory of economic history from the 1840s and a centuries of failed experiments still gets people lining up to endorse him and pretend that he would endorse them (if not for the fact he is deceased). Not limited the know-nothing progressives , but also a leading foreign religion import to China aka CCP

I am a non Jew in Canada. I am gay and have voted Conservative since 9/11 because the Conservative party here is pro Israel. I vote Conservative because of the Jews and Israel. The Liberals and NDP here are very anti-Semitic. It is disheartening to know that Jews will not vote for their own safety and security.

It will be interesting to see which path is taken by Avi Lewis, the new Jewish leader of the NDP. His grandfather David Lewis (from Poland) was the first Jewish leader of a CDN political party (NDP) in the 1970's. Hopefully Avi Lewis will take the NDP Party on a less "progressive"

trajectory. However I am not holding my breath.

J Street is a shanda - I’m guessing they polled their own contact lists.

That was my first thought.

Honestly, I can’t believe that we are still having this conversation. This is the most depressing news that I’ve heard today. I’m a Canadian Jew still in disbelief over our last Federal election.

Weisshorn Ent's avatar

It is abundantly clear that J Street managers only pays for polls when they have been assured the results will agree with what their slogan sheet. Same too with their donors who operate in missionary mode using information manipulation to get the outcome they want. Same too with the grassroots symbols who are drawn to savior psychology as a means to bolster their feelings of smug superiority. We need systematic deprogramming for this corrupt ecosystem.

Ok all you American liberal/progressive jewish Democrats who even bother to know of the existence of this website or even give a shit that it exists and read it-weigh in. Let your numbers be heard!

I am a lifelong liberal voting Jew that started to have inklings in the early 20s that the progressive arm of the D party was rotten. 10/7 i am an independent leaning conservative and most of the Jews i know feel the same.

Reform Judaism and J Street.

Super hero self loathers.

Fierce competitors of the Neville Chamberlain” award for cowardly acts, they both come in first.

They disparage the Jewish people and the Jewish homeland any chance they get. They will be incinerated when Moshiah comes. Oh well.

On another point, JStreet is an anti-Zionist organization that aligns itself with the anti-semitic wing of the Democratic party. It is in no possible way "pro Israel". It should not be considered a Jewish organization at all. I have no doubt that this poll is distorted to meet the result JStreet wants. However, support for Israel among American Jews ought to be 100 percent and certainly a large super majority. It is not and a lot of this is because of organizations like JStreet as well as almost all of the legacy media.

You cannot extend an analysis of American Jews to other Jews in the Diaspora. Most certainly not to Australian Jews. While there are certainly 'liberal' thinking Jews in Australia who are anti-Zionist and anti-Israel, the huge majority - perhaps 85% - are solidly behind Israel and understand the necessary decisions that have been made in war. I have written before about what I perceive to be differences between Jews in the US Diaspora and elsewhere. Generally, they seem less comfortable in their Jewish identity and more likely to feel they have to fit in with others. I'm not sure why this is.

Even the Reform movement in Australia is very traditional in its religious practice and solidly behind Israel.

There will always be individual Jews who become enemies to an extreme in their assertions against Israel and they are used extensively by media to invoke prejudice and assert bias. We have our share of them in Australia. It does, however, become tiresome to be thought of and lumped together with American Jews insofar as attitudes and practices are concerned.

I don't think very many Democratic Jews have learned much of anything. They continue to use cognitive dissonance to deny what is right in front of their eyes. Ultimately most will choose their domestic politics and their hatred for Republicans over Israel's security and perhaps even the security of American Jews as things have not gotten THAT bad.. yet. Europe Canada and Australia is a different story. They are clearly coming to realize that the ever growing Muslim population means they have no future in these places. They will first abandon the left wing parties and if doesnt succeed, they will abandon these countries for Israel.

In the United States Muslims make up barely one percent of the population and Jews still outnumber them 2 to 1. While certain areas and cities begin to resemble Europe in their acceptance of hostility to Jews, and American Jew can leave these places and go to many other places in this giant country where such conditions don't exist. But that could change.

Excellent article. If "progressive" Diaspora Jews keep shooting themselves (and the rest of us less moronic Jews) in the foot then perhaps it would be helpful if we picked up the gun and taught them a thing or two so they will more effective defending themselves when the true enemy shows up at their front door.

I learned that I can no longer choose a side. Each issue must be faced with critical thinking, and it's important to research.

For instance, I am now an independent. I can't stand Trump, and I don't like how he has handled communicating with the country. I also dont like Netanyahu and the officials who ignored the female analysts reports about something brewing in Gaza.

Iran has proven to be what we learned in 1979. An evil regime that would turn on the whole of Middle East to keep its wealth within a group control.

I lost all of my Democrat friends. The final one yesterday when she told me Israel is evil and stealing land in Lebanon. It's disappointing that everyone relied on me for years of research and my critical analysis of things, and then assume they know how I feel about things related to Israel. Meanwhile, antisemitism is up 300%.

Just wanted to let you know I read your post.

Joshua, frankly I think the problem goes even deeper. Too many Diaspora Jews are still trapped in illusions about politics and ideology. When you see that roughly 30% of Jews in New York voted for a candidate like Zohran Mamdani — someone openly hostile to many of Israel’s core concerns — it shows just how disconnected parts of the Diaspora have become from the realities Jews face today. October 7 should have shattered those illusions, but for many it clearly hasn’t. Until Diaspora Jews start putting Jewish security and survival ahead of ideological loyalty, these same mistakes will keep repeating.

This post reminds me of Exodus:

The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by GOD’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots, when we ate our fill of bread! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to starve this whole congregation to death.”

Exodus.16.3

How is it possible that the Israelites, who were slaves in Egypt, describe life in Egypt as a life of plenty and satiety as they trekked through the desert?

Besides the "pot of meat," what other food do they mention that they ate in Egypt?
