Great piece. We never read about the Israelis displaced in the North. My daughter- in- law's Mom was living at the beautiful Rosh Hanikra kibbutz. After the 10/7 massacre she's been staying with different relatives.
I loved this piece so much! It shows us what a remarkable Country Israel is from every dimension. I lived there in in the 1980s and was infected with this special and remarkable place called Israel. You are special, living under constant threat and you deal with it! Exhausting but you do! The West needs to defend you because you are our last defence!!!
Every article I read here is informative and heart-wrenching. Thank you for being honest, for taking the time to educate, for pointing out just how intimately 10/7 affected every Israeli. The ice cream picture was emotionally evocative, but the quote really brought home the reality of being a Jew: "We’re the only people in the world where our neighbors openly announce they just won’t have us here".
Forgive me, the Gold quote reminded me of a line from a song in the musical "Chicago": we had artistic differences; he saw himself as alive and I saw him dead." Anyway, this business of not going all the way because of civilians and what the world will think has to stop (in my opinion). They will hate us anyway. They MUST fear us; we MUST devastate them. That's the only way.
I'm 68; I have a nice house and a lovely life in southern Florida. More importantly, I have three children with their own families in the States. I'm not going to leave. It's that simple. If things got ridiculously bad, that's another story. Then we would all leave. But until then, no.
Well written and very true. As an Ex-Rhodesian I can, along with many others who were forced from our country and watch it get destroyed,
I partially understand what Israel is going through, but in a much bigger way. I pray for you all.
Keep up the good work Cape Town

Joshua, you are so brilliant. I know your mother is very proud. Keep up the fabulous work.

*the Golda quote . . . "
I don't know why. I see Bibi as a heroic figure standing up to the world.

"I know many centrists and right-wing folks who have had enough with Netanyahu".
Like every politician, Bibi has good, bad, and ugly. The question is what percentage of each, which is often in the eye of the beholder.
