“Israel is not viewed by progressive activists as the world’s embodiment of evil because of settlements or policies or any of the other red herrings that are thrown up to justify the hysterical condemnations. It is viewed as the embodiment of evil because Jews have traditionally been the empty vessel upon which humans have projected their sins — and the Jewish state is both the national embodiment of the Jewish people and the natural inheritor of centuries of projection and vilification of Jews.
Jews worldwide are not targeted because of Israel’s existence. On the contrary, Israel is targeted because of Jews’ existence. At a minimum, it is the Jewish people’s insistence on existing as a self-determined people that sets off the haters.
It is not, fundamentally, the existence or actions of Israel that lead to global condemnations and acts of hate against Jews around the world. No, we’ve got this exactly backward. It is the hatred of Jews around the world that leads to the military and rhetorical assaults against Israel. Global antisemitism is not a byproduct of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a byproduct of global antisemitism.”
The cult of Critical Anti-Zionists have created entirely symbolic entities called "Gaza" and the "Palestinians" that have almost nothing to do with their referents, and through intense social pressure and a great deal of inflammatory propaganda (all rooted in Left academia and whitewashed by global media) have made these the heaviest, most sacred symbols of the Social Justice movement, which is the post-Christian post-Marxist faith of young secular Westerners who've been processed and conditioned by our most prestigious universities.
As this is still a young faith growing stronger and gaining power, first it needs unifying symbols, which usually means something both highly simplistic and moralistic that also overrides all reasoned thought and any grounding in historical context. And what could be better than the "Palestinians" (at least the symbolic entity stripped of real-world agency and responsibility): a people synonymous with displacement and oppression, darlings of the Western Left since Munich 72, who are poor brown indigenous victims who only want grandpa's farm back, the world's only fourth-generation refugees, who excel at getting their kids killed on camera. And there is simply no argument or idea that can refute the image of a bleeding or dead child, especially not when blasted out on every screen and verified by the UN and the BBC.
But more important than symbols, this new faith needs coherence and rituals of bonding, and there's always only one group that provides the most bang for the buck when it comes to potent concentrated hatred: the eternal Other, Abel to the Christian Cain, the Jews. ("What joins men together is not the sharing of bread but the sharing of enemies." Cormac McCarthy)
The cult of Critical Anti-Zionists have been so smashingly successful that they've conditioned just about everyone in the West to think "baby killer" and "genocide" when they see or hear anything about Israel and this is why Progressive Leftists NEED to vote for whoever vows to hate and oppose it the most (even if they live thousands of miles away and are voting for municipal offices), as they've been conditioned in the style of "A Clockwork Orange" to believe this is the most crucial and mandatory belief and way to signal your loyalty to your tribe, faith and its morality. Anything otherwise would feel blasphemous.
The Western Left has now been completely conquered by the Critical Anti-Zionists, which essentially sells the same old Jew hate in shiny new bottles. Ugly times up ahead...
50.78 % of the vote in 2025 went to Mamdani. Cuomo, the Democrat Independent, gathered 41%. Mamdani won through the energised youth vote who registered in large numbers, even if the record turnout was still low at 43%. The manipulation of this vote by Islamists through the use of AntiSemitic sentiment cloaked in the language of Oppression, has divisively replaced the optimism that used to be the Hallmark of the Politics of White America which in turn used to appeal to all Ethnicities in The USA. Also, Mamdani is a Liar, who knows full well that Socialist Economics do not work. But admitting only White Excellence including America’s Jewry built America and her wealth, sticks in the craw of all Islamists. Out-competed, the response of Mamdani and Islam is to abuse a small and successful minority, the Jewish People. Sentiment: and the Politics of Envy. Plain for all to see. Stated simply, the same as 1930’s Germany.
The morning test will only grow more anti-Jew, because that's it's intended purpose.
Today it's Israel. Tomorrow it's AIPAC. Next week it will be celebrating Jewish holidays or going to any synagogue that doesn't specifically condem Israel. What comes after that? Eating corned beef? Being circumcised? It may never end, unless the Democrats force the socialists out of their party and start holding Jew haters to account.
It is too late for the Democrat establishment to gain control back. Those who want to retain power will jump on board the DSA platform and become even more extreme.
Excellent article. One thing I would add is that I hope Jewish voters have finally learned the lesson of the last few years. Too often we've voted as though Israel were just another foreign policy issue. It isn't. Whatever our views on taxes, healthcare, or any other issue, Israel is the one place that exists as the national home of the Jewish people. History has taught us how quickly circumstances can change.
I hope more Jewish voters make support for Israel their first question when evaluating a candidate. And I hope non-Jewish voters eventually reach the same conclusion, because the forces targeting Israel today don't stop with Israel. History shows that extremism rarely confines itself to one community. In real estate they say, "location, location, location." For Jewish voters, perhaps it should be "Israel, Israel, Israel."
I have a bad feeling that you are reading too much into the motives of Mamdani and his followers. There may be a few here and there who will engage in the convoluted reasoning that gets someone to hate Israel. My gut feeling though is that they are just plain old Jew hating antisemites who have found a way to express their pent up hatred to their heart’s content. Everything else is just a pretext that gets them where they want to go.
New Yorkers have lost their collective minds. 3,000 were killed on 9/11, 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, this takes you straight to S A. And since 9/11 over 45,000 terror attacks have been committed by Islamic Terrorists in over 70 countries around the world. The Jihadis are fearless and NYC Jews are spineless cowards.
The constant repetition of genocide, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, baby killers, all falsehoods, have colored the minds of otherwise sensible people, and reinforced and invigorated the pre-existing hatred of devil spawned antisemites. Sadly, a small minority of Jews believe this BS. It is a devil spawned brain rot that defies logic and reason, despite efforts to assign reasons that don't cast blame on the devil. It reminds me of the friends of Job who tried to rationalize and explain why Job's life had turned for the worst, why he was suffering. His friends mean well, but the bible tells us Job was blameless and the devil is the cause of his misery. The Book of Job is the story of the Jew through the ages, with various rationalizations given for why Jews have suffered across nations and continents, but as the devil hated Job because he loves Hashem, so too the devil hates the Jew who as a people continue to love G-d. As G-d restores Job, so too the day will come when G-d restores the Jew and no longer allows the devil to poison the mind of men.
(I am Jewish; obviously we are a people, not only a religion).
I agree that there is a profound question regarding being a unique people within a nation. And of course George Washington's take on the Jews was wonderful. There is a BUT, however. The reason the United States can welcome, tolerate, understand the Jews as a separate people within the larger nation is because OUR FUNDAMENTAL VALUES ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE VALUES OF THE LARGER GROUP. This is simply not the case with fundamental Muslims. It's a very important central point, I think.
Ms. Strasser's essay is spot on and the themes have been presented by others. The real question is what is the realistic future and how to deal with it. Our Jewish leadership organizations in the US and other western countries almost seems in paralysis. The conditions facing the US are similar in many ways to what Germany saw in the late 1920s and early 1930s. We are seeing a radicalized Jew hating movement which has all but usurped a formerly legitimate political party, we are seeing our legal system reluctant to tackle Jew hatred as they did other attacks on minorities, we are seeing Jewish businesses threatened by mobs with no consequences and we have seen the accepted demonization (if not actual promotion of demonization) by our 'elite' universities, media and entertainment. Time for analysis is over. Time for developing plans is needed.
I am not a New Yorker but during the mayoral election it looked to me like the Democratic Party rebranded Mamdani as OK for theJews merely a week or two before the election. In other words, the Dems consciously lie and pressure voters every day to contribute financially so they can screw voters over.
Progressives are almost as nutty as MAGA but they control the Dem stage. They played their Native American apology thing to pretend some moral excellence while it cost them nothing.
They have no reasonable economic plans to solve problems.
It's hard for the Dems to lose the Presidency in 2028, but they're doing their best to achieve it.
I predict some Normi Repubs will run for President and will win.

I think some 'white guilt' is at play. Isn't it fashionable to mention Manhattan is on stolen Lenapehoking Native American land?
Israel should say sorry you won't fix their rat problem, seeing their vote was mostly concerned with geopolitics.
