Learning is iterative but should be more than reactive. It should anticipate. Inside jobs are not new. As brave as many of the Israeli passages were it would likely been for nought if not for the pilot who open the door with mortal wounds

This excellent summary of Israel’s ever-evolving approach to airline security stands in stark contrast to most of the Western world’s failure to learn and adapt to the evolving internal threats we face on numerous fronts.

"Institutional memory" is key. Having an agency like Shin Bet and the El Al crews aware of what has already happened and taking steps to stop these terrorists fights complacency and causes them to see the entire view as important. This recent flydubai flight was immeasurably helped by the Captain unlatching the cockpit door which allowed the passengers and the relief crew to gain access to the cockpit and foil the Omani who started the entire debacle. As to the 1972 Sabena rescue, Bibi was accidently shot in the arm by one of his mates and the terrorists were neutralized. Finally, Entebbe made the world know that Israel will move Heaven and Earth to rescue its citizens.

I'm Israeli born and need a separate Israeli passport to travel to Israel. In 2010 I was visiting and was gifted a special book from Kfar Etzion from the current residents there. Upon leaving Israel--they examined my luggage and because of the book --we were detained several hours--with questions. I didn't mind. I'd rather they interrogate me--than trust anyone--including me. Everything must be scrutinized.

Now they know the pilots themselves need to pass intense background checks.

"Praise God!" The same words of the enemy. "God willing" as well. In truth --it is the acts of man himself that we praise or despise. There is one God--and if so --we are all God's creation. Sadly right vs wrong is up to man to uphold.

Some 15 years ago, I went to a Krav Maga dojo that opened up near me out of curiosity. I talked to the owner/sensei/chief instructor, who had done a stint working in Israel’s airline security. I asked him, “Is it true that you used racial profiling, and one reason America’s security system failed is that they didn’t do that?”

His answer was, “You’re only right about the ‘profiling’ part. You’re wrong about the ‘racial’ part. That’s because bad people who want to do bad things come in every race, creed, and color.”

“Sure, certain people of certain backgrounds get looked at more closely, but what we really focus on is your behavior. We study every incident and look for behavior patterns that mean trouble. That means we are checking you out the minute you buy a ticket—I can’t tell you the details of what we do, but even then, we look for certain patterns and red flags just in buying tickets that point to trouble—We gather a lot of data on incidents and the events that led up to them and what happened afterwards to help us spot those patterns and behaviors that are red flags.”

“And we don’t just check you out at the checkpoint and call it done. As I just told you, we check you out when you buy a ticket, and if there are certain red flags we’ve spotted when you buy the ticket, we give you and anything you carry extra attention when you get to the airport, when you check in at the check in counter, when you drop off your luggage, when you go through security, when you’re at the gate, and on the plane. What’s more, you’d never know it—the folks checking you in and taking your luggage might be asking innocent questions and making small talk, but all that is really them checking you out.”

Thank you for this superb compendium. Many of the readers probably have not heard of most of these incidents. Add Flydubai to the long list of airborne attacks against Israeli and Jewish passengers. I am proud and thankful for the amazing Israeli intellect. Am Yisrael Chai!

One essential point is missing in this historical aviation report and that is the fact that the major part of these terrorist attacks are perpetuated by the cult of death - Islam.

Never forget 9/11

What a great historical walk through things ,few of us would have thought worth the connecting

You saw a trend ,and threaded it beautifully a bf with real lessons.

This deserves a modular course at any decent college or yeshive actually. That the world won't notice ( only Jews after all) makes it invaluable to your allies like the Worldwide Israeli Friends Initiative( WIFI)...😇.

Good overview of the challenges that Israel had to meet to secure its planes and passengers from hijackers. However, it should be pointed out that the danger of a jihadist pilot is something that was very much on the radar of the Israeli security services. So the fact that Hamam al Hamami, with a profile that raises multiple red flags, was allowed to fly into Tel Aviv, represents a severe failure of Israeli security.

Of course the common thread tying all the hijackings together are those sweet, innocent victims whose cause needs to be championed in the street, on campuses, through the Press, on social media, "humanitarian" NOGSs, realpolitik practicing politicians, and let us not forget that institute of paragon virtue, the UN and its subsidiaries.

Easy solution — give them another state from which to launch attacks. But now their base of operation would be a state which comes with a lot more protection from those evil Jews. Jordan would love it if they succeeded. That is why they annually celebrate Black September.

Once returning from Paris I almost missed my flight and ran to the wrong door....a door to the el AL Flight to Tel Aviv....I realized my error when I was confronted by Israeli security....good for them....I found the right ramp to the flight to NYC. I went through the period you recount....so I know that one of Palestine's major contributions to world history and culture is the hijacking of flights.....and I'm so glad to know that this is a bitter pill for a thing called a hasan piker to swallow.....how much more happy he'd be at more dead Jews, who deserved it ......in his small, bitter, angry and twisted, distorted mind. And he's an influence. he gets to appear at any university with accolades.....Ayan ali Hirsi. or Alan Dershowitz or any Zionist Israeli....no way.....I wonder if the Naza flim makers can show up or are they tainted too by birth..... well fcuk them.
