The pivot to Qatar began in 2003 when President George W. Bush moved American air bases from Saudi Arabia to Qatar, because SA forbade the use of the bases to attack a fellow Muslim country. Qatar placed no such conditions. Otherwise an excellent article.
We knew Vance was trouble when he refused to refute or denounce his close friend tucker carlson, amplified by his refusal to visit the Western Wall during his trip to Israel. tucker is a Muslim lover and I suspect similar from Vance. Israel is a useful foil and negotiating piece so far as Vance is concerned. It is up to Israel whether it asserts itself and follows its own path. This ill conceived MOU depends on Israel accepting the insult of not being included in negotiations, and doing what it is told. It falls apart if Israel does what it feels need be done and asserts in doing so that it isn't a signatory to the MOU and not obliged to abide. Vance will continue to follow the Qatar and Gulf States first posture, America second; Israel needs to chart a path best for itself. Vance isn't Trump, and Trump seems to have washed his hands of it and left the decisions to Vance.
