On that topic, in 2024 my wife and I, and some friends, were in southern Tuscany over Simchat Torah and we decided to find a shul. Services were being held on an estate owned by a congregant as the Siena synagogue was closed while being renovated. In the middle of nowhere, to protect maybe 50 people, there were 2 Italian police cars and 4 armed policemen, which quite surprised me.
(Side bar: after the service the entire community asked us to join them at a local pizza restaurant where they’d reserved tables for all! The poor rabbi was left behind with his strictly kosher meal but didn’t seem bothered!)
