Social Justice Jews continue a tradition that's existed for centuries among Western Diaspora Jews (akin to the maskilim, Reform and socialist Jews etc), which has as its fundamental belief the idea that if Jews can only just prove to their enemies that they are MORE moral, MORE selfless, MORE devoted to Justice, and that their religion isn't foreign or threatening, but actually even MORE Christian than Christianity, then they can lose their stigma and somehow end the hate always aimed in their direction—that this strategy has only ever failed only seems to make it stronger and more unkillable.
The notion that Jews can only assert their worth by claiming that the ultimate goal of their faith and traditions is a desire to "heal the world", a preposterous sentimental form of utopianism that's only ever backfired, just goes to show you how deeply embedded Jew hate is, and how deeply internalized it is by Western Jews.
Jews don't need to argue for their right to exist freely or for their right to have their own homeland (which is only painted as some sort of ethnocentric hate crime when Jews do it), and have nothing to apologize for.
Social Justice Jews are willing to sell out their own people for a bit of safety and some assuaging of personal anxiety, but they will get neither.
I came here to say this, but not as eloquently as you.
I've always been puzzled by why Western Jews refuse to advocate for themselves. Think about the United States Congress. Think about its black members. They have no problem advocating for their fellow blacks. Affirmative action? No problem. DEI? You bet. Reparations? Absolutely. There are Hispanic representatives who advocate for open boarders. There are even (infamous) representatives from Somalia and Palestine, who have no compunction about advocating for their fellow nationals, even over the welfare of other Americans.
When it comes to Jews in Congress, I cannot think of a single one who has ever explicitly advocated for other Jews. Bernie Sanders? Are you kidding? Chuck Schumer? He wouldn't even bring a vote on defining antisemitism to the Senate floor. Jerry Nadler? He's too busy talking about islamophobia.
If you want to see support for Jews in the legislative branch, you need to look to folks like Representative Elise Stefanik and Senator Tom Cotton. Both are amazing.
For too long, Jews have been valued for eschewing Judaism and their fellow Jews. That time needs to end. At a time when the instinct is to hide one's Judaism, Jews need to be more visible and more vocal.
I'm not Jewish but my wife is, so I've been very puzzled by the tendency of some Jews to be always apologizing, to be afraid of standing up for themselves and their people, to be almost reflexively willing to say to their enemies "Well, I do see your point and hope we can have a discussion and come to an agreement..." (which is mostly sad but absolutely insane when it comes to Hamas and their backers), or witnessing all the Jewish politicians you just mentioned prioritizing the needs of their careers and the Dem Party over the safety and survival of other Jews—and in searching for answers, I came across this excellent (if disturbing) book I'm currently reading "The Oslo Syndrome: Delusions of a People Under Siege" by Kenneth Levin (2005). Here is an excerpt from the intro:
"The profesional literature seeking to explain in psychological terms this tendency among at least some members of besieged or abused groups to embrace the indictments and calumnies of their abusers has often invoked the psychoanalytic concept of "identification with the aggressor." The concept, and the term, were introduced by Ana Freud in the 1930s. They have been used to refer to a defense mechanism in which the individual blunts the pain of negative interactions with others, such as criticism or rejection, by embracing the indictment, making it one's own self-criticism. The individual thereby at least attains a sense of being in control of the indictment rather than simply feeling the passive victim of assault by others, and he or she attains also a sense of shared comprehension and rapport with the attacking other rather than feeling simply the targeted outsider.
The pain of the abuse and the fantasies of relief—however divorced from realistic expectations those fantasies may be—generate both self-denigration, the inclination of some in such circumstances to blame themselves for their predicament, and grandiosity, the inclination to believe that they have the power by their own actions, by their self-reform, to alter the behavior of their abusers.
These dynamics can be seen at work repeatedly in the attitudes and behavior of significant segments of Diaspora Jewish communities subjected to anti-Semitic pressures from surrounding societies."
Is what you describe the same as "Stockholm Syndrome" ? They sound about the same.
One other thing that I'm frustrated with is when Jews defend Israel from criticism, but start their thought with, "I know Israel isn't a perfect country, but...". As if any country is perfect. And comparing a functioning democracy to a kleptocratic, gender-apartheid, death cult, you need to equivocate about Israel being the "good guy"?
I think the book "The Oslo Syndrome" was written 20 years ago in the wake of the Oslo Accords, so it is referring to that by updating Stockholm Syndrome and pointing out how Oslo was another false hope that there would be peace bw Israel and its enemies. It is well worth reading.
"If you want to see support for Jews in the legislative branch, you need to look to folks like Representative Elise Stefanik and Senator Tom Cotton"
And John Fetterman.
And Senate Majority Leader John Thune, whose words on Nov 19, 2024 I will always remember:
"To our allies in Israel and to the Jewish people around the world, my message to you is this: Reinforcements are on the way," Thune said at a Republican leadership press conference Tuesday.
Yes, John Fetterman has been quite a pleasant surprise. Of course, his Democrat colleagues now have to label him as "mentally unfit". He seems very clear-eyed to me.
Social Justice Jews are the self erasing Jews. 1000 times worse than kapos during WWII. Kapos existed; their job temporarily assured their and their family lives. When they were no longer needed they were deported and murdered. They were murdered last. Jews had no choices in surviving in the Ghettos and the Holocaust in general. The rule that prevailed in the temporary Ghettos was that of a jungle, the enemy raged inside the Ghettos. Outside the Ghettos, the Nazis and supporters of the Third Reich’s ideology surrounded them.
Social Justice Jews have a choice, they choose Hamas and their supporters whose ideology rests on violence, that Israel can be undone, that Israel is temporary and violence can erase Israel. This always was and is about the resentment that Israel/Jews exist.
An analysis that cuts to the chase. Thank you for explaining why so many well intentioned Jews appear to support everyone except their Jewish family. Hopefully they will be open to joining us again.
There's a time and place to be good to others, to fight for the downtrodden, to speak out for those who can't, but October 7th took us to an entirely new level. This quote, “If I am not for myself, who is for me? " Hillel the Elder, Pirkei Avot 1:14, was more necessary than ever. We saw that many were not for "me," including social justice Jews who felt their conscience eased by aligning themselves with the 'poor Palestinians.' Where was their conscience for the slaughter of Israelis, the hostages hidden away, tortured, not fed? As you said, their Jewish values were to fight for those who were oppressed. I agree that once these institutions collapse, we must greet those who want to come back. Maybe, they will have realized that their own people deserved social justice and can begin anew.
Nice Irvings, Rabbi Kahane called social justice Jews. He nailed it. Too nice to own a gun. When black panthers were showing up to harass Jews at synagogues, announcing it with all the news channels meeting up with cameras for the show, Kahane brought his own style Minyan with baseball bats and lead pipes. Probably a few were packing. The news reporters were shocked and aggrieved. And Kahane was right. Imagine: Jews fighting like punks…anyway, the Jew haters whom social justice Jews petted slinked away and Kahane was the new story.
I am not sure I understand this article. Jews should be human. They should take care of their own and Israel should lead. They should also show humanity in their treatment of others. We should be proud of helping ourselves and we can look to other ethnicities to see how they help their own, not accept guilt for being kind to ones own.
I have always told my friends that Tikken Olam is not the bedrock of Judaism. It is an aspect, but that’s it.
Interesting to note, the Hebrew word for conquest in your top photo is spelled incorrectly. If you are carrying a sign, get your language right. The spelling should be כבישה.
@Suzanna Eibuszyc you are absolutely right, in part. You are actually referring to T’Shuva. Even if a tragedy is befallen upon the Jewish people, Jews are required to look inward, to do T’Shuva. This will hopefully contribute to the betterment of the world
I am referring to how the self-erasing Jews have hijacked the Tikken Olam concept, that it is up to the Jews to heal the world. Which is total nonsense.
I’ve never really thought of it this way, but I think you’re right.
When I saw that *none* of the groups we have so tirelessly fought for for *decades* not only did not step up to help *us*, but in some cases, actually abandoned their own almost sacred mantras (#MeToo and #BelieveAllWomen) and accused us all of both lying about everything that happened on October 7 (especially the brutal rapes) as well as orchestrating it *and* committing it all ourselves, something in me broke and said “Enough.”
I will still defend individuals and even groups when I actually see injustices being perpetrated upon them, but I honestly want nothing more to do with general advocacy for other groups, at least any that have not stood up for us.
Even as a disabled person as well as a Jew, I absolutely eschew the whole “intersectionality” movement. That has made me uncomfortable for quite a while, especially the “oppressor/oppressed” focus and aiming it at Israel, and the obvious difference in needs of all the included groups, but now, I’m like eff them all.
We have only ourselves to rely on as history unfortunately repeats itself once again - and that alone can be a full time job.
Just reading on TOI the smarmy, sanctimonious proclamation from "artists" who condemn their Industry for failing to condemn the "genocide in Gaza." Oh yes, they cover their butts with a single mention of massacres of Oct. 7th....that's it...otherwise no mention of the overtly genocidal Iranian regime and its Arab proxies. Jews fail themselves over and over again....yet somehow the Israelis pulled it together after Oct. 7th...when the Muslim world was so sure that with massive anti gov't street demonstrations, Israel would crumble under its assault. And as long as Hamas is in Gaza they pledge to do it a thousand times more. This seems to be of slight concern to "artists" and a lot of progressive Jews who fall over themselves providing aid and comfort to those who'd slit their throats in an instant.
Another great article on the self-righteous, "holier than thou" crowd, many of whom refuse to accept they were hoodwinked by the "progressives" they tried to befriend. It was an effort born of cowardice: the inability to stand up for their fellows, and their moral values, against the opinions of others.
There's a wonderful image in another article in this substack:
It shows a large sign "Boston Jews say Free Palestine". Just a few feet behind them is another, smaller sign "Resistance is justified when people are occupied". Now what would that refer to? Shani Nouk? Shiri Bibas and her two babies?
That one picture captures the point of this essay.
It was only after Oct 8 that I realized "Ahav Yisrael" can be a very difficult mitzvah to keep.
the media ...say NY Times....never fail to zero on the "Jews say" posters....so as to create this" narrative" of a ground swell of American Jews repelled by Israel's actions and even its existence...see the execrable p. beinart.
For the good of the state-- Marxism-- rules out the community. Social Justice (an oxymoron) Jews then are Marxists that care for all, but not their Jewish brothers and sisters. Shame on them, the "good Jews". I am glad their era is (almost) over. I have a hard time with Jews that don't really like being Jews, which they are. I will likely neither shun those who have seen their sins nor will I embrace them. Let them find their own way or, better yet, pray to G-d for some guidance.
I am exhausted. Just exhausted. Too exhausted to even write politely anymore. There are too many braindead self-hating liberal Jews. They exhaust me. I can play Whack-an-Islamist all day long, even though the supply of those fuckers is unlimited.
But when faced with the steady stream of Religious Democrats who fear Carbon more than Hashem and believe St. George Floyd of Blessed Drug Addiction, Home Invasion and General Horribleness is more important than American girls raped and killed by illegal migrants, and who think the Fakestinian cancerous demons in human form "have a point" after doing nothing but try to kill Jews since before Israel's founding, I just get tired.
There are still hostages being held under Gaza as douchebag "As-A-Jews" in Dyke Slope, Brooklyn hold weekly bitchfests about "Zionism" across New York, supported by vicious Hamas fangirls.
Most Jews I know are too stupid to understand that the activists in the liberal/progressive causes they spent years supporting actually hate us and will be first to use violence against Jews as soon as they can. History tells us that could be soon..
I don’t support social justice movements bc I don’t know what it means and the term is deliberately ambiguous bending to mean anything even going against the core meaning of justice.
I am proud that Jews have often been involved in movements to reform societal deficits and ills. Now it’s not Jews in particular it’s a sickness of the west to create new wounds where wounds have largely healed to really abuse power for pathetic ends and it’s uglier than it sounds bc it materializes into a power grab and cash cow for the people at the top.
I am stupefied by social justice Jews who are not only safeguarding the tribal identity of others but lavishing praise upon even coopting other identities as if they don’t have their own long standing set of traditions to pluck from but for whatever reason those are perceived as superstitious and deficient.
But there are also social justice Jews who respect tradition may even follow it without horrifically bastardizing it. I think this is more common in Israel mainly bc of social mores there.
The problem is not the social justice Jew it’s the causes being espoused. Soviet jews were unfortunately at the forefront of communism but it didn’t give them the liberation they desired and it ended with a giant prison where neighbors ratted each other out. But the true believers never balked and makes you wonder what they were really after.
Those Communist Jews give the rest of us a bad name and a reason for others to hate us, others who lump ‘all’ people of a group together to hate because they have no critical thinking. Of course the ‘Pro Palestinian’, anti Israel ‘Jews’ also give permission for others to hate us, if they can hate their own well then so can anyone else.

An outstanding explanation that goes to the heart of the "social justice Jews" and their overriding objective to conform

You were quite eloquent yourself!

He was also right. I heard him speak in person in NYC when I was in my 20’s. He was mesmerizing, I never forgot it.
Such a memory—how wonderful!
It actually was. He spoke the truth.

Tikken Olam means we have to heal yourselves and this is how in the end we heal the world.

Get your hugging game going. Reality generally mugs liberals in to a practical conservative outlook. It might be a law I don’t know.
I think the law is ‘slay Amalek,’ no mercy…
