I was familiar with such information warfare tactics from my intelligence work, although I have to hand it to Hamas for perfecting it. It comes down to images versus words, and the relative power of both. If you show someone a horrific image they respond immediately. If you then explain that this image is actually fabricated in some way, look at this and this and this, you are depending on the viewer being able to quiet their emotions by re-interpreting the image. Most people don't have the time or often even the ability to do this. Hamas and other Palestinian movements use images while Israel uses words. This is why Hamas won the PR war.

One point you might add is that all the bureaus for the Middle East for all the major news organizations are in Israel because it's the only place their staff would live. They disproportionately cover Israel because they live there and because there is no consequence to criticizing Israel, whereas there are extensive consequences to criticizing Hamas or any of the authoritarian regimes.
