Nachum, this is an excellent article, but in my opinion you omitted our number one vulnerability: the massive, bloated Jewish organizations that dominate diaspora Jewish life.
They take in enormous amounts of money, yet there is almost no accessibility, almost no accountability, no unified strategy, no coordinated messaging, and very little real leadership that reaches ordinary Jews on the street. Everything is reactive instead of proactive. We respond after the damage is already done instead of building long-term communal strength beforehand.
The other side understands slogans, propaganda, activism, emotional narratives, and strategic coordination. Meanwhile, our organizations often seem trapped inside endless bureaucracy, fundraising, conferences, statements, and institutional caution.
That, to me, is the true Jewish swamp.
And until that swamp is torn down and rebuilt from the ground up with real accountability, accessibility, clarity, and strategic seriousness, diaspora Jews will continue drifting without unified direction while the threats around them grow more organized and more confident.
This is the exact problem in Canada which is now the worst Jew hating country in the English speaking world as the Liberal Party and its PM, incites Jew hatred and condones the violence against the Jews in Canada. Worse, Carney has bought off the main media as they fund "acceptable" newspapers who follow the Liberal Party line faithfullyand censor anything that taints the PM or the Liberal Party as well as the jihadists and Leftwing puppy dog Hamas wannabes, and the CBC, the party funded by taxpayer money , is the worst inciter of Jew hatred in Canada. Carney several months ago rewarded their "good work" with an extra billion dollars.
Bonnie, yes, I live in Toronto, so I know exactly what you are talking about, and I agree with you completely. The atmosphere here has changed dramatically, and many ordinary Jews feel abandoned, dismissed, or gaslit by political leadership, media narratives, and institutions that seem unwilling to confront what is happening honestly.
And thank you as well for your thoughtful comment.

Frederick, If your comment had been a monologue in a play, I would have given the actor and the playwright a standing ovation. JUST WOW! You nailed it!
Your post is exactly why I do not give any money to legacy Jewish organizations--it's worthless.
Hello9, thank you very much for the kind words. And believe me, I genuinely wish I were wrong about all of this. Nothing would make me happier than for someone to give a convincing argument showing that these organizations are strategically prepared, accessible, accountable, unified, and truly functioning at the level this moment requires.
The most dangerous lie New York Jews tell themselves is that New York cannot turn because Jews helped build it. History laughs at that fantasy. The mob does not care about Jewish comedians, hospitals, universities, publishers, or bagels. The Islamist does not pause because Brooklyn once had Jewish neighborhoods. The revolutionary Left does not spare Jews because Jews marched in old coalitions. Today’s antisemitism calls Jews oppressors, colonizers, capitalists, globalists, whites, not-whites, Zionists, and enemies—whatever label fits the day’s rage. Mamdani’s New York will not be a Jewish city. It will be a warning siren. Wake up before Election Night and elect Bruce Blakeman.
Where did you get the 2 million figure? It's less than 1 million now. Not to worry, in 2027 NYC Jews will have strong representation in Congress. Their only Jewish congressman will be brad Landers, Mandami dhimmi and anti " Zionist " and all around kapo. Vibes of 1933 berlin.
When they tell you what they will do, believe them. When my wife’s mother read Mein Kampf and Hitler attacked Warsaw, she escaped east towards Russia. She pleaded with most of her family to do the same. She survived hardships and survived - they stayed and perished. When current NYC mayor openly ignores Jewish community safety, he tells you that you shouldn’t ignore his stand.
We need to remember that American "elites" were very instrumental in the creation of nazi Germany through their efforts at making the delusion of eugenics into "science fact". Hitler even wrote to the American Augenics Society to thank them for the ideas with which to rid the world of "unwanted populations". It was only changed from eugenics to "population control" following WW(eleven). Many American soldiers in that war no doubt were killed by weapons manufactured by American industrialists. Those of us who are still living who have memories of the war were seriously impacted by it, probably especially if we were Jewish. It's haunted me my whole life and yet somehow we never discussed it or how it affected us. I was born in 1938 with a very good memory. I remember being in my crib, being pushed in my baby carriage, so yes, I remember WW2. I had a sister born in 1936 who, as an adult, became what I would call an antisemite. My sister, born in 1943 with no memory of the war, dismisses antisemitism, felt it was okay to be "objective" about the Muslim ideology. My sisters and I did grow up in NYC. It's possible that if a person hasn't lived through it, hasn't experienced it, that it becomes ancient history and therefore isn't real. When I was young, before we became "white", the help wanted ads in the NY Times commonly had the proviso "Blacks and Jews need not apply". How many people are aware that there was actually one Jew who was protected by Hitler and remained living in nazi Germany. That was Otto Warburg, the brilliant (and gay) chemist who Hitler thought could figure out how to cure cancer. Hitler was terrified of cancer and Warburg actually did come up with a cause and potential solution. Now, after 75 years his findings are being taken seriously. But why did he stay? Why would he want to help Hitler? Perhaps it was the same psychology that afflicts those Jews who support Mamdani.
1) "We need to remember that American "elites" were very instrumental in the creation of nazi Germany through their efforts at making the delusion of eugenics into "science fact". Hitler even wrote to the American Augenics Society to thank them for the ideas with which to rid the world of "unwanted populations". It was only changed from eugenics to "population control" following WW(eleven)"
...and you can name them: The Democrats!!!!!! The Party of Slavery, Jim Crow, The KKK, Eugenics and now Muslim Jihad.
2) "Many American soldiers in that war no doubt were killed by weapons manufactured by American industrialists."
What on earth are you talking about? America didn't make Nazi Weapons. No rifles, no planes, no ships, no tanks - nothing. The only thing we did supply were trucks made by Opel and Ford, but they were also commercial trucks. We did send arms to the UK and the USSR.
Funny, I was stationed in Germany in the US Army on an old Luftwaffe base back in the 1960's. No American planes, amigo. Messerschmitt and Henkel were German.
3) "When I was young, before we became "white", the help wanted ads in the NY Times commonly had the proviso "Blacks and Jews need not apply."
I was born in NYC in the 1940's and I worked with Jews and Blacks at 3 different companies. Name the companies that had these ads. I never saw them.
At the NY Times today few/no Whites are allowed to work for the NY Times. There are now lawsuits by whites against the Gray Lady.
A note to say that extremist Ideologies are only a front or a cloak or cover for the basest and nastiest aspects of Human nature, which I add we all share in our darkest moments. Society breaks down when this Darkside is used by powerful malicious elements in society, and the Darkside becomes organised. This is where we are heading now. What is interesting here is how the educated middle class in America have adopted Hate on the campuses. Note well how this is being organised. This is Stage Two of a Four-stage Process, as Hatred and Exclusion become a Political program which ends as either Expulsion and/or Genocide. I have said before that Islam, when Islamic Demographics are not addressed, becomes a threat to the Host Community. This is where we are now too. Jewish Demographics are stable in the West. Islam is not. It is these concerns, and The Far Left’s response to this, which are driving Hate in the community today. The Jewish People in America have become a Projected Cypher for this. As always, the scapegoats.
Thank you so much for your wonderful/honest/illuminating essay !!!!!!!!.....Definitely, the writing is on the wall, we Jews see it , and always remember the tragic results of the sick antisemitism !!!!!! ( especially now, with a mayor who's a radical Muslim friend of the proPalestine protestors solidarized with TERRORISTS !!!!!!!!!!!........
I grew up in NYC. It's not the city I grew up in. My mom, one sister and two nieces still live there. My mom is 89. She just hopes Mamdani doesn't really do anything. The rest of my family supports him. After October 7th I paid more attention to the history. All these places where Jews were assimilated. I asked my mom after October 7th, were we living a lie? She said no, we were assimilated. I see wild anti Semitism online. I do not see it in my daily life, but now I know that can change. I just know I am too old for this foolishness.
If the Jews want to rid NY of the evil mayor, they need to elect a governor who has the guts to impeach him (for Civil Rights violations in the least). Watch him flee while choking on a bagel.
What we can do is donate money to charities that provide services in Israel. War is very expensive. Second, donate to Birthright Israel to expose young Jews to Israel. Third donate to Jewish education in America. Fourth: File lawsuits against our enemies, tie them up in court.
Israel has a tremendous future ahead, Rabbi Nachman said "Seit night measch" do not despair. Nachman also said "Shrei a gevalt" Sound an alarm. Wake up people.
Islam and communism are a danger to all of western civilization. To defend western civilization we must have regime change in Iran. Whoever controls the energy of the world controls the world.
The Jewish NYC I grew up is a thing of the past. The ubiquitous kosher butchers, Jewish style delis ...some even kosher.....and the appetizing stores are now like museums. Not of an extinct race but a very assimilated one. Our Jewish reps are abysmal. Nadler? Our Jewish court jesters are now Jon Stewart...shrieking about how hateful Israel is. No movie like EXODUS will ever be made by "Jewish controlled" Hollywood. Perhaps some younger Jews are awakened by Oct 7th and 3 years of hate demonstrations and a racist mayor. Others are motivated as 50 year ago to run to far left DSA which is virulently antisemitic...all the evidence for this means zero....what does seem to motivate the anti Jewish Jewish left is the so called resistance to Israel's alleged far right apartheid government which began a genocide using the the tissue of Oct. 7 as their excuse. So maybe the long long long New Yorker essay on division within the Jew is true....from their perspective that's good as Jews turn away from identification with Israel. The UWS is their bastion and J street their public personna....the alleged pro Israel anti Israel organization. is it receiving Soros funding and Muslim Brotherhood funding like the antisemitic jvp?
Part of the problem is that "Jews"like Ladner and Bernie are all for this. "Jews" don't speak with one voice. In fact the ultra-Orthodox sect that often demonstrates in the "Free Palestine" demonstrations--did the same in the 30s. They--and numerous "Jews" are easily "used" against Jews who see the problem. Additionally most NYC Jews vote "Dem" (and it's now a Marxist/Islam Party"The Red/Green" alliance). The DNC is riddled with antisemites. Dan Goldman in his desperation to keep his seat (losing to Ladner in the polls) is selling his soul demonstrating against ICE. Nadler already has by endorsing Mamdani.
NYC Jews are convinced that Trump (the best friend to Jews and Israel--ever)-is their enemy! They tend to not care about Israel. They tend to hate Bibi.
In other words THEY have brought so much upon themselves--yet they don't have the emotional acuity and common sense to see it.
Nachum Kaplan has written the historical warning that every New York Jew needs to read — and then look out their window.
Because the warning is no longer abstract.
His name is Zohran Mamdani. He is the Mayor of New York City. He governs the largest Jewish population outside Israel itself. And he has spent his tenure making his true intentions unmistakably clear — not through innuendo, but through documented action.
He invited Mahmoud Khalil — the ringleader of the campaign of intimidation and harassment against Jewish students at Columbia University — to Gracie Mansion for an iftar dinner, calling it “a great honor.”
His wife Rama Duwaji liked more than 70 Instagram posts endorsing extreme anti-Israel positions in the immediate aftermath of October 7. She liked a post claiming the New York Times investigation into sexual violence on October 7 was “fabricated.” She provided illustrations for an author who called Israelis and Jews “vampires,” “parasites,” and “cockroaches.”
When confronted, Mamdani called his wife “a private person” and refused to address the substance of the findings. Yet in the same breath he had previously called her his “best advocate” for influencing his policy decisions.
Meanwhile Mamdani has called for the NYPD to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, labeled him a war criminal committing genocide, and advances what can only be described as Qatar and Iran-aligned narratives into American institutions through the vehicle of the Democratic Socialists of America.
And yet liberal Jewish organizations — the same ones who cheered J Street, defended Jeremy Ben Ami, and spent decades assuring us that progressive politics and Jewish safety were perfectly compatible — have lined up behind this man. Some endorsed him. Some celebrated his election. Some continue making excuses for him today.
Kaplan is right. Jews repeatedly mistake prominence for protection. But what is happening in New York today is something even more disturbing than complacency.
It is collaboration.
Liberal Jews embracing Mamdani are not merely deceiving themselves about their safety. They are actively serving as political cover for a man whose wife celebrated October 7, whose guest of honor terrorized Jewish students, and whose ideological framework is indistinguishable from the forces that want Israel destroyed.
The strategy is transparent — use a small circle of extreme left Jewish activists as a shield against accusations of antisemitism. Some Jews support me therefore I cannot be antisemitic.
These Jews are not allies. They are not bridges. They are not peacemakers.
They are sacrificial pawns in a very dangerous game of chess — moved into position by a player who has made absolutely clear which side of the board he is on.
Baghdad in 1930 did not believe it was about to become Baghdad in 1941.
New York Jews who are providing political legitimacy to Zohran Mamdani today should ask themselves — what city do they think they are living in?
