I have some really fabulous stories about my interactions with El Al security when I worked at Heathrow airport. I have detailed some of it in a book, which unfortunately I'm not allowed to have published. Great airline, great people who work for it and extremely safe.
I’ve been to Israel once and we flew EL AL. There is nothing like the emotional experience of the passengers singing HaTikvah when the plane touches down.
One of our flights was right after the Yom Kippur war when I volunteered to help on a Kibbutz. Have never experienced something so emotional that when we were landing in Lod, the passengers were crying and singing Hatikvah. Yes, tickets are more expensive but you are supporting a country not just a business.
In the ‘80s my parents flew El Al from London to Tel Aviv. My mother always spoke about how severe the journey was from checks in to the plane. But she also said she felt the safest ever.
The chilling reminder of this story was when the delightfully sounding “boyfriend” was happy to send his pregnant girlfriend on a flight with a bomb. Seems nothing has changed amongst some people.
Oooh they just featured this story on the Simple Hebrew podcast!! Turns out I understood a lot more than I thought I did, so thanks for that. El Al deserves a Nobel Prize - no other nation has to operate an airline this way.
