I remember hearing that the rise of the Medici family was one of the worst things that happened to European Jews, because it meant Christians got back into the moneylending business, so Jews were still resented but were no longer as economically vital.

I also remember hearing South Park mention that in the United States, Jews often ended up in showbusiness because they were discriminated against in so many other employment sectors, so now in addition to being accused of 'running global banking' Jews are now accused of 'running Hollywood'.

A key point to add is that the whole world benefits from the existence of the finance industry, through provision of resources for investment and saving. The resentful idea that financial profit is harmful is wrongly grounded in emotion rather than reason.

Interestingly, there was a secular Christian man who at one point supported the emigration of German Jews to Palestine. He delved so deeply into Jewish history that he actually applied to his government for funds to get a rabbi to teach him Hebrew so he could read Torah. This was turned down.

That man was Eichmann.

Unfortunately, a knowledge of history does not prevent one from having vile views, or even committing vile actions. There needs to be a foundation of sound values of decency and humanity, and a society which promotes this decency and humanity, rather than hate and indifference to rule of law.

On the other hand, there are many entirely ignorant people who are decent and humane.

I think you've fallen into the leftist-statist belief that all humanity can be made good if they are simply educated properly, and we have the right set of government policies, etc. But individual values and a society's culture matter, too.

This is such an important piece. When I was young, I was as an avid archaeologist. I was fascinated by Biblical archaeology! I learnt something very important. Jews before medieval times in Britain were forbidden from farming the land. They were allowed to look after money and money lending. Fascinating, there must be a thread there. What an about face when you look at the miraculous events that they brought to Israel through their miraculous tending of the land. They are world leaders.

This is an important topic, and I've had similar discussions with people like "Shaun." The problem is that even though the historical context is believable, it's not considered relevant. In other words, people will largely accept the argument that Jews were forced into finance in the middle ages, but it doesn't address what they perceive as the modern problem: Jews using their influence over the financial industry to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else.

Is there anyone out there who would like to work with me on a big piece comparing enlightenment values to Islamist Hamas' values, I mean a point by point walk through and comparison, one of of those long complex pieces that most won't read haha. I think one point people don't realize is that everywhere the Palestinians go they cause problems, their culture (which evolves out of values) is Islamist and largely radicalized, and just as an individual cannot flourish when they are fixated on grievances, and/or when they are chronically unemployed they cannot succeed.

Well, if you’re really concerned about getting people to read a piece involving a contrast against Hamas Islamist values, that contrast should be what Jesus taught.

1) God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son (Jesus’ voluntary death as a payment for the sins of the world), that whoever believes in Him will not die, but have eternal life (with God).

2) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.

3) Love your neighbor as yourself.

4) I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to The Father except through me.
