The one type of Jew not discussed is the anti-Zionist Jew that, unfortunately, is growing more common among younger Jews of the “liberal ilk.” I consider them to be atypical, and we most definitely do not need that type of diversity.
Yes in big tent Jewishness, an authentic Jewish postion is not the dismemberment of the National Homeland of the Jewish people. We were not awarded a land by Balfour or the Brits or even the UN....Jews who were motivated won this land by a hard struggle. Their work isn't going to be disparaged, dismissed and denounced by the likes of if not now, breaking the silence or jvp Or so called "open Hillel"
Our cultural and ethnical diversity is a product of the diaspora. It is how we survived. But our strength is not in our diversity. It is in our unity. E pluribus unum would be good motto for Jews post 10/7.
All i know is that however different a Jewish person can be from the way i am, once he says he is a Jew, there is that feeling of meeting another "family" member. Perhaps that is a gift we received from the anti semites of the world? papa j
And may we continue to flourish in diversity as we contribute to the family of Jews in Israel and the world. That concept gives me hope Shabbat Shalom.
Multi-Racial, Multi-Ethnic, Multi-National, Multi-Cultural and Multi-Religious (Orthodox and Reform) ... and all Jewish. Get used to this. We are all Jewish.
I love this essay. Early morning covfefe, waiting for dew to evaporate so I can gather herbs…bargaining w Adonai that this is not work on Shabbat…I love this essay. Shabbat shalom.
"But one thing is unequivocally true amongst Jews, no matter their place of birth, ethnicity, customs, traditions, and interpretations: When one Jew meets another Jew, there is an immediate inseparable bond." -- On a personal level, I have found this so true and could cite several examples -- part of a large extended family (who argue, fail to agree, pick fights and yet recognize the "connection" Am Yisroel Chai)
I would have left “‘liberal’ ilk” out of this essay. The left look down on the right, and the right look down on the left. Condescension and exclusion go both ways and is not limited to one end of the political spectrum.
Thank you for your observations on the multiplicity of the Jewish people. I love the variations on my chosen religious/spiritual path. We are all one heart beating to the origins of our culture/religion/tribe. We have joyful roots to cling to even after Oct 7.
A very noteworthy and informative essay. What I came away from is in agreement with you that Jews, as diverse as we are, must embrace this Jewish diversity. If we don't and criticise those Jews that we see differently than ourselves, then we will dissolve our strength. As the saying goes, strength is in numbers, and we can't afford to splinter Jews into groups based on religious, cultural, etc. differences. It is in appreciating our differences as Jews that we can be a unified front for those who throw hate at us.
As always, I love reading your informative articles, but I would like to talk about something extremely sad and disturbing, those young jews pro Palestinians at the encampments at several universities.....

I cannot understand this; so very sad.

I'm new to Future of Jewish. Excellent article. Even as a Catholic, I feel more Jewish everyday.

Jews are like everybody else-only more so.
Everybody is above average.
