I want to warn people that I’ve seen the future of Jewish New York, and it doesn’t look promising. New York is over for Jews. We had a wonderful city and a glittering life once, but that time is gone.
Jews of New York own their bad decisions that led to this disaster. Decades of blind allegiance to corrupt Democrat politicians and governments leading to ever more failed leftist policies, now culminating in the potential election of a known Jew hating Communist. The author's distain for Florida says it all, even in the midst of obvious failure of leftist politics over religion and common sense, single issue Democrat talking points emerge. Now that the author has fled the failure that she helped to create, she appears to bring her same left leaning politics to Israel. So sad that her political dogma is so entrenched that she cannot see that she is the problem.
I'm afraid I have to agree. Being a kid in the 60's I remember when the democrat party were big supporters of American Jews and Israel. The "Diary of Ann Frank" was required reading in my high school. I saw the worm turning when Obama was elected but I never thought it would lead to today's appalling situation.
People who are similarly appalled need to wake up! The democrat party is no longer your friend.
Obama told us who he is when he published his autobiography, "The Dreams from My Father". Obama's father was a Muslim and Islamist who likely hated Jews. That Obama would love to have the approval of his father tells us mountains about Obama. Keep in mind that he is the Godfather of modern Democrat, dare I say Democrat Socialist, politics. Obama is aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm, CAIR, for his political power. This is his master plan. Do not be fooled by his smile.
Antisemitism hollowed out the Democratic Party, leaving it in the hands of a radical Islamic socialist-progressive wing. I worry the Republican Party could face the same fate. After all, so-called conservatives like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens are already spreading antisemitism like wildfire.
Yet mainstream Republicans and conservatives are doing what the Democrats refused to. Admitting there is going to be a battle over this and being willing to fight it.
Except Tucker Carlson has pushed himself into the fringe of conservative politics which is the opposite treatment of Democrat Socialists who are embraced by mainstream Democrats. It is like night versus day. The two circumstances cannot be any more different
She doesn’t like armed people, apparently even armed Jews, in Florida, but is now living in a heavily armed Jewish society. And continues to claim that “no reproductive care is available in Florida.” Sadly, the meet-up video of the 4 “Rabbis for Zohrani” that was afflicted upon us consisted of the very people the skier from Texas were speaking of—“Jewish homosexual communists.” I, too, struggle with when and if it is time to leave for Israel, but at least where I live now, I have the 2nd amendment.
She worked for the Obama White House. Says all you need to know. We are our own worst enemy. The Federation has Rahm Emmanuel speaking at the Washington Conference 🤮
It takes a lot of gall to have worked for Obama with his hatred of Israel and end up moving to IsraeI. I can imagine making Aliyah and ending up with her as my neighbor🥴
Read above: Obama was / is demonstrably anti-Semitic based on his alliances with radical Muslim organizations like Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm, CAIR. I think he is behind these mayoral races featuring Africans. Obama identifies as a Muslim African
My thoughts exactly. She also laments the exodus to Jewish Day schools which to her represent the new modern ghetto. I’ll take a Jewish day school anytime over the DEI nonsense that’s being taught in the public schools now.
Yes you’re right though about the Democratic Party. People always told me the Right were antisemitic but they are wrong. The only antisemitism I ever felt was from the Left. Left wing Jews are the worst! Remember back in the 1930s many joined the Nazi Party, and even worse turned their families in for their own freedom. I know this from personal experience.
No Jews were joining the Nazi party in the 1930s. The Nazi regime’s racial laws and policies immediately began excluding Jews from political, professional, and civic life. Not at all allowing them to join the party.
I feel this quite deeply. I had a similar experience when we went back- the one time we went back to see my mother’s home, where she was born and lived until her teens, when the family left Rabat (Morocco). All the Jews were leaving at the time, and she never really had a clear answer for why they left when they left. But it happened that a couple of days after we arrived, the King died. And there was such a fear among my (distant) cousins- all the younger ones had also left or were leaving, and some older ones had mostly stayed- and my mother who I had never seen afraid until that time. What would the new King do? How would he treat the Jews? It ended up that the new King was alright, moderate, but that fear, the memory of that fear still stays with me. This is what it is to be dhimmmi (second class citizen). I never thought it would happen in NYC, but I guess we always think it’s not going to happen to us. Whatever happens with the election or Mamdani, the embrace of him and his normalization of antisemitism has shown that too many NYers are not good neighbors.
They say that, don’t they? I just saw a similar story from Frieda Vizal doing a tour of Krakow where the tour guide made the comment that losing their pre-war Jewish community feels like a phantom pain when you lose a limb. But maybe I am cynical when I think of survivors returning to their Polish homes, for example (because this happened all over Europe) only to find their neighbours ensconced in them, their valuables, buried before they were forced into transports, dug up and vanished and hostility, dangerous hostility, from the people they had lived cheek by jowl with for centuries. And many, many were killed for expecting to return to their former homes, it’s a dirty not so secret and disingenuous for people like that tour guide to speak wistfully of the loss of a city’s Jews. So many actively participated and profited, while the majority closed their eyes, their ears and their souls to their former neighbours.
New York without a thriving Jewish community is not New York. It is hideous that this creature is permitted to run with his overt antisemitism, making (or not making, for example, when asked to describe Hamas as a terrorist organisation) statements that must set off intergenerational trauma alarms in a community that has contributed so much to what gives New York its internationally recognised character. I cannot even imagine. And it will come to Sydney and Melbourne here in Australia too. NYC is going to determine, I fear, the attitudes of Jews and non-Jews alike world wide. Not a world I want to live in.
My Hungarian family tells this exact story about their apartment and silverware. The neighbors had distributed their belongings amongst each other. And someone was living in their apartment.
I just finished reading The Boy From Block 66 by Limor Regev, the biography and survival story of Moshe Kessler. He was born in Berehovo which was then Czechoslovakia but one of those areas in Europe where borders changed frequently. So this town became Burgsass when it was Hungarian.
I encountered the names of towns I recognised, there was one - I cannot recall the spelling- but it sounded like Monsey, which I associate with Satmar. I realised reading the strong connections that to this day still reside in the collective memories of those who for generations lived in areas all over Europe, celebrating the holidays, building and attending synagogues, serving in the armies of the countries of which they were proud citizens. And now? Silence. Homogeneity.
I can understand why some Hasidic courts preserve their connection and traditions formed in these regions. And the incomprehensible reality that it is all gone. Wiped out like centuries just didn’t happen.
To see the conditions that led to such a catastrophe appear again, not 80 years since the Holocaust/Shoah is mind boggling, it defies logic, reason and decency, not to mention historical fact.
The ethnic cleansing of millennia old Jewish communities all over the Middle East since 1948 is bad enough, but now? Are we seeing it happen in Western countries as well? I feel so ashamed of humanity. I cannot even begin to fathom how it must be affecting kids going to school who now cannot be protected from reality because they are being told not to ‘advertise’ their Jewishness.
The complicity of the Western media in amplifying antisemitic propaganda is disgraceful and I really believe it - and the UN - need to be held accountable. Now the war is ‘over’ ( is it though?) it is plain as day there was no genocide and no famine, the two biggest blood libels Hamas and its Iranian/Qatari backers have disseminated. The media- the BBC, the NYT, CNN - have been forced to retract blatant blood libels over and over yet they continue to print them. They will continue to do so unless they are forced into accountability or enormous huge fines. Something. They have actively put Jewish lives and communities in danger. In Australia, we have the highest percentage increase in antisemitic crimes in the world. All fuelled by ignorance and the media reporting propaganda as fact.
If Israel wasn’t tearing itself to pieces with this Military Attorney General scandal - which is actually exactly what I’m talking about: terrible and false blood libels disseminated by antisemites - I would hope it would not let the UN and western media off the hook. I don’t even know if a nation can sue for libel/defamation, but it would be a positive step to find out. Centuries of this stuff has to stop. Otherwise are Jews going to be confined to Israel as the only safe haven on the planet? This turns my stomach. And also proves why Israel must always exist.
Dear Hana, sadly true. My family flew from Hungary during the pogroms, I think it 1917, they flew to Germany (of all places). The rest of my family in Polen, Ukrain, Romana, France and Germany were killed in WWII. Jews are never save, unless in Israel. And still we have to fight till the end. We have no choice. Dear Hana I wish you a good day and stay alert, even in Israel. AM ISRAEL CHAI!!
You do understand that she and her halfwit idiot comrades are the actual problem, they are the very reason that this is all happening, this insidious moron still does not get just how much damage they have done to the Jewish nation, so no, kick her the #### out Israel as she has no right to be there, no leftist tool does, send this worthless garbage back to NYC to live in the cesspool her and her vile kind created. Its long past time that we Jews started cleaning out our own house and rid our world of rabid filth like this.
I'm not Jewish. I'm a (Hindu) reader from India who has been following the plight of the jewish community after October 7th. There is an intimate bond between us Indians and the Jews of the world. We have repeatedly offered sanctuary and a home for Jewish refugees escaping whatever expulsion they were facing at different points of history. Israel is one of our favored nations.
Reading this piece from Hana, I couldn't help thinking how blatant and open antisemitism is a sign of things to come. They invariably mark watershed moments in the history of nations. It was so in the defining years of Christendom. Later, during the rise and spread of Islam. Much later came the nazis and ww2.
Now that it's happening again we can assume that it portends another major cataclysm and a reset for the world.
Painful as this saga is it seems to me that this crisis is uniting Jews like never before. NYC's (and other big cities of the world) loss is going to be eventually Israel's gain with so many Jews from the Western world relocating there. It could be the beginning of something new - a resurgent Israel and Jewish community that can remake the world in their image.
You people are among the most visionary and innovative of God's creations. Perhaps he has brought this about to get you out to Israel before he burns the (Western) world down as it's time draws nigh. And then you will be called (as always) for the work of civilisational restoration. So hang in there good people. We need you to light the future for the rest of us :)
The author writes: "A national discussion about Jews never works out well for the Jews." This isn't only about New York, because the NATIONAL discussion is happening already--and getting louder and more awful each day, especially since last week (anyone who doesn't know why, yet, you will very soon hear about it). The "discussion" is causing a rift now even in the Republican party. A tipping point is coming, and nationally--not just in New York--things could get real bad very quickly. It's horrifying.
I hope this writer understands that the only world leader who supports the Jews today is Trump. Her support for the Democrats and the Jews who read the NYT like it’s their bible are partially responsible for this situation. I had to leave NY because my family and friends despise the fact I voted for Trump. Too many American Jews have no understanding of the growth of antisemitism in the western world and their left wing views encourage it. I hope this author is not aligned again with the left wing politics in Israel!
Guaranteed she suffers serious TDS and hates him and the Republicans with a passion, she is too damn stupid to realize that its all her and her pathetic mealymouthed spinless husband that have brought this horror to our doors once again.
This essay makes me incredibly angry. Perhaps I should take a beat. If she and I ever met, there's a good chance we would not like each other. In fact, I abhor self pity. This is one Jewish voice I could have gone my whole entire life not hearing.
I could not agree with you more, in fact if her and I were ever to come face to face, only one of us would be walking away, she would not survive and encounter with this ex soldier, I am so done with these leftest tools.
My first reaction was to fault the author for helping ruin NYC and other Democrat-run cities. But looking closer, I see she was just another true believer. She backed Obama because he promised change. Later, she probably supported DeBlasio and Bloomberg—not for their ideas, but because they seemed like the “good guys” compared to the other side. The sad truth is that people like her are easily swept up by whatever’s fashionable. And right now, that fashion is antisemitism.
Sorry but I cant help but despise this author and everything she did and stands for, she lived her whole life viewing the world through her right to kill the unborn and looking down on her own tribe in pursuit of her own leftist objectives, she is the very epitome of what is wrong with today's society and leftist Jews, first they destroy everything they touch and then they run away from the mess they created.
She is the very reason that October 7 happened, she is the very reason that NYC and the USA is in the trouble it is in, she and her fellow Judenrot are the garbage that are the card carrying leftist idiot tools that are bringing about the next holocaust, Jews, men, woman and so many of our children and young soldiers are now dead because of this vile human being, and now she has the audacity to land in Israel and wants them to defend her miserable and utterly worthless life, sorry but she has no right of return or the right to live in Israel, she is a traitor no less than Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, they are the reason why we will be facing extinction in the not too distant future.
May Hashem show her no mercy as she does not deserve it.
I don’t think you should hold the author responsible for all the ills you describe. She sees the danger if Mamdani becomes Mayor of NYC which is a lot better than the many Jews defending and supporting him, including (I’ve read) parts of the Satmar Hasidim in NYC.
You are scapegoating and trying to sugarcoat her, I did not hold her alone responsible, I said it was her and people like her who caused this, but what makes her 1000X more vile and disgusting is the fact that she is an Obama alumni, she helped get that vile Jew hating sodomite elected and then served him and his Jew hating agenda like an obedient little useless tool all while he flooded the world with islam and evil, make no mistake in her and Obama's part in what is coming for the Jews, he planed it and enacted it, and she and her despicable kind enabled it all to happen, I have been forwarding this track on to my counterparts in Israel, if I was her I would leave Israel while she still can.
A quick question for you, Hana. What is the Demographic situation for Jewish People in New York? Has the Jewish population shrunk due to less Jewish people having Children? Wikipedia says not. But Is declining numbers of Jews one of the reasons the Antisemitic Hard Left Mamdani is doing well?
I wonder about Hasidic Williamsburg and the large historical communities of New York Hasidim. They have very high birth rates compared to other groups and I know they organise efficiently for elections. Will it be enough? The Democrats fckd around and found out last election what happens when you alienate the Jewish vote. This is my big hope and i hope also that it’s not a fantasy. I am Australian so I have no clue as to the New York mayoral elections, I am just fervently hoping this antisemitic Hamas supporting creep is shown the door. Wouldn’t it be lovely?
It is my experience that the Jews in the United States who cry that their neighbors have rejected them are "progressives" who lived in progressive enclaves. Many of us saw it coming. You ignored us. Millions of Americans support Israel have no problem with Jews and hate the progressives who rejected you.
"But mostly, I want to warn people that I’ve seen the future of Jewish New York, and it doesn’t look promising. Thanks to my proximity to former U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, as well as my previous work in Democratic Party politics and campaigning, I knew a year ago that Jews and Israel would be on the ballot in the New York City mayoral race, though I didn’t then know what that would look like. Thanks to my book research into my own family’s story of forced migration, I know that when Jews are on the ballot, it’s time to get the f*ck out."
So, until very recently you belonged to a political party that not only hates Jews and Israel, but they hate America, Christians, The Constitution, The 1st Amendment and the 2nd Amendment that allows the 1st amendment to remain alive
You belonged to the party of slavery, Jim Crow and the KKK.
You are just now realizing that having voted for all this, your answer is to flee to Israel after the mess you made. You are only now warning others of how bad your choices were. Not anywhere do you show reflection or remorse.
The word hypocrite doesn't come close to describing your behavior. I hope some day you sit down to a banquet of consequences.
I became very sad while reading this article. Although I tried to be sympathetic to the author, I agree with many of the comments. Obama certainly did not help any of us but too many are still misguidedly enamored of him and Michelle, completely ignorant of the fact that Trump has been and is our champion.

This column is almost a parody of itself. Mamdani will be elected by the same Jews who will whine about how terrible he treats them.
It is my experience that the Jews in the United States who cry that their neighbors have rejected them are "progressives" who lived in progressive enclaves. Many of us saw it coming. You ignored us. Millions of Americans support Israel have no problem with Jews and hate the progressives who rejected you.
At this point, the election hasn't even been held yet. Why is everyone so sure the communist is going to win?
Because Curtis Sliwa is almost certain to siphon off enough of the vote that would go to Cuomo to make it inevitable.
Sad. True.
