I want to warn people that I’ve seen the future of Jewish New York, and it doesn’t look promising. New York is over for Jews. We had a wonderful city and a glittering life once, but that time is gone.

I'm not Jewish. I'm a (Hindu) reader from India who has been following the plight of the jewish community after October 7th. There is an intimate bond between us Indians and the Jews of the world. We have repeatedly offered sanctuary and a home for Jewish refugees escaping whatever expulsion they were facing at different points of history. Israel is one of our favored nations.
Reading this piece from Hana, I couldn't help thinking how blatant and open antisemitism is a sign of things to come. They invariably mark watershed moments in the history of nations. It was so in the defining years of Christendom. Later, during the rise and spread of Islam. Much later came the nazis and ww2.

I feel this quite deeply. I had a similar experience when we went back- the one time we went back to see my mother’s home, where she was born and lived until her teens, when the family left Rabat (Morocco). All the Jews were leaving at the time, and she never really had a clear answer for why they left when they left. But it happened that a couple of days after we arrived, the King died. And there was such a fear among my (distant) cousins- all the younger ones had also left or were leaving, and some older ones had mostly stayed- and my mother who I had never seen afraid until that time. What would the new King do? How would he treat the Jews? It ended up that the new King was alright, moderate, but that fear, the memory of that fear still stays with me. This is what it is to be dhimmmi (second class citizen). I never thought it would happen in NYC, but I guess we always think it’s not going to happen to us. Whatever happens with the election or Mamdani, the embrace of him and his normalization of antisemitism has shown that too many NYers are not good neighbors.

I'm not Jewish. I'm a (Hindu) reader from India who has been following the plight of the jewish community after October 7th. There is an intimate bond between us Indians and the Jews of the world. We have repeatedly offered sanctuary and a home for Jewish refugees escaping whatever expulsion they were facing at different points of history. Israel is one of our favored nations.
Reading this piece from Hana, I couldn't help thinking how blatant and open antisemitism is a sign of things to come. They invariably mark watershed moments in the history of nations. It was so in the defining years of Christendom. Later, during the rise and spread of Islam. Much later came the nazis and ww2.
Now that it's happening again we can assume that it portends another major cataclysm and a reset for the world.
Painful as this saga is it seems to me that this crisis is uniting Jews like never before. NYC's (and other big cities of the world) loss is going to be eventually Israel's gain with so many Jews from the Western world relocating there. It could be the beginning of something new - a resurgent Israel and Jewish community that can remake the world in their image.
You people are among the most visionary and innovative of God's creations. Perhaps he has brought this about to get you out to Israel before he burns the (Western) world down as it's time draws nigh. And then you will be called (as always) for the work of civilisational restoration. So hang in there good people. We need you to light the future for the rest of us :)

I feel this quite deeply. I had a similar experience when we went back- the one time we went back to see my mother’s home, where she was born and lived until her teens, when the family left Rabat (Morocco). All the Jews were leaving at the time, and she never really had a clear answer for why they left when they left. But it happened that a couple of days after we arrived, the King died. And there was such a fear among my (distant) cousins- all the younger ones had also left or were leaving, and some older ones had mostly stayed- and my mother who I had never seen afraid until that time. What would the new King do? How would he treat the Jews? It ended up that the new King was alright, moderate, but that fear, the memory of that fear still stays with me. This is what it is to be dhimmmi (second class citizen). I never thought it would happen in NYC, but I guess we always think it’s not going to happen to us. Whatever happens with the election or Mamdani, the embrace of him and his normalization of antisemitism has shown that too many NYers are not good neighbors.
And, many, many people said how sad they were that the Jews were gone.
They say that, don’t they? I just saw a similar story from Frieda Vizal doing a tour of Krakow where the tour guide made the comment that losing their pre-war Jewish community feels like a phantom pain when you lose a limb. But maybe I am cynical when I think of survivors returning to their Polish homes, for example (because this happened all over Europe) only to find their neighbours ensconced in them, their valuables, buried before they were forced into transports, dug up and vanished and hostility, dangerous hostility, from the people they had lived cheek by jowl with for centuries. And many, many were killed for expecting to return to their former homes, it’s a dirty not so secret and disingenuous for people like that tour guide to speak wistfully of the loss of a city’s Jews. So many actively participated and profited, while the majority closed their eyes, their ears and their souls to their former neighbours.
New York without a thriving Jewish community is not New York. It is hideous that this creature is permitted to run with his overt antisemitism, making (or not making, for example, when asked to describe Hamas as a terrorist organisation) statements that must set off intergenerational trauma alarms in a community that has contributed so much to what gives New York its internationally recognised character. I cannot even imagine. And it will come to Sydney and Melbourne here in Australia too. NYC is going to determine, I fear, the attitudes of Jews and non-Jews alike world wide. Not a world I want to live in.
My Hungarian family tells this exact story about their apartment and silverware. The neighbors had distributed their belongings amongst each other. And someone was living in their apartment.
I just finished reading The Boy From Block 66 by Limor Regev, the biography and survival story of Moshe Kessler. He was born in Berehovo which was then Czechoslovakia but one of those areas in Europe where borders changed frequently. So this town became Burgsass when it was Hungarian.
I encountered the names of towns I recognised, there was one - I cannot recall the spelling- but it sounded like Monsey, which I associate with Satmar. I realised reading the strong connections that to this day still reside in the collective memories of those who for generations lived in areas all over Europe, celebrating the holidays, building and attending synagogues, serving in the armies of the countries of which they were proud citizens. And now? Silence. Homogeneity.
I can understand why some Hasidic courts preserve their connection and traditions formed in these regions. And the incomprehensible reality that it is all gone. Wiped out like centuries just didn’t happen.
To see the conditions that led to such a catastrophe appear again, not 80 years since the Holocaust/Shoah is mind boggling, it defies logic, reason and decency, not to mention historical fact.
The ethnic cleansing of millennia old Jewish communities all over the Middle East since 1948 is bad enough, but now? Are we seeing it happen in Western countries as well? I feel so ashamed of humanity. That is one of the most accurate statements I have heard in a very long time, and it is so true of so many countries and cultures all throughout history, their golden eras have all been depleted as their Jewish societies were expelled or driven out by antisemitism, no land nor country will remain prosperous once their Hashem blessed Jews have left.

I became very sad while reading this article. Although I tried to be sympathetic to the author, I agree with many of the comments. It is my experience that the Jews in the United States who cry that their neighbors have rejected them are "progressives" who lived in progressive enclaves. Many of us saw it coming. You ignored us.
