McDonald’s is the largest of Israel’s burger chains, with more than 220 locations, equating to a 60-percent local market share.1
The initial branch launched near Tel Aviv in 1993, and two years later, the world’s first kosher McDonald’s was opened in a suburb of Jerusalem.
But just before McDonald’s opened up shop in the Holy Land, the Israeli government nearly banished it — in what could be called a classic case of chutzpah.
