I was raised in the Conservative movement and went to a Conservative Hebrew School. There was never a sense (in the 70's) that Zionism and Judaism were separate. They were and remain fully integrated.
WOW whoever this Beery is should be writing for a publication called How to End Judaism. This person is the best friend to all the MANMADE "JUDAISM'S".
This one will take repeated readings. “The Eternal does not need our praise or support or care that our fellow human does.” I’m down with that. I figure God can get what he needs without my help, though I’m happy to partner with him/her/it. It’s the guy down the street with the sick daughter that needs my support and care. And a roasted chicken.
The author talks about observant Jews who do not accept Zionism and argues that they should. He does not discuss secular Jews who do accept Zionism (about 50% of Israelis and a significant portion of the Diaspora). Many founders of Israel were secular (Labor leaders, socialists, etc.) I wonder why this topic was not addressed.
I do not agree with 100% of this essay, but it offers fascinating glimpses of both our history and our possible future. Most important, it expands the dialogue that, G-d willing, will make the worldwide Jewish community a healthier organism.
The most important evolution that Zionism needs to embrace at this time is to recognize the injustice of the Nakba.
This does not imply sole Zionist responsibility for the Nakba nor does it absolve the Arabs of their own culpability and many crimes against the Jewish people.
Recognizing the injustice of the Nakba acknowledges a historical truth and opens a wider path to reconciliation.
After WW2, people all over the world were displaced and country borders redefined. Millions moved around from India to Ukraine, the Middle East, etc. Jews were slaughtered and pushed out of Mideast countries even BEFORE WW2. No one is protesting the creation of Pakistan or redefined Jordan (where the Gazans belong). Only Israel is supposed to acknowledge the "injustice" of displacement of some Arabs (who were invited to remain and help build Israel, even after they rejected a two-state solution in 1948). No other country in the world, only Israel? Also-- It was Egypt who convinced the "Palestinians" to leave--temporarily-- because Egypt promised them they would destroy Israel and then they could return. That didn't happen, and... here we are.
Your argument, which is often made to deny the injustice of the Nakba, is very hypocritical coming from a Jewish/Zionist perspective. Indeed, population displacement was normal throughout history, long before WW2. The majority of the Jewish people was exiled from Israel following two failed uprisings against the Romans. Yet for 2,000 years we kept alive our connection to the land and nurtured a desire to return, which was eventually fulfilled b
So why do you think that the Palestinians should not also maintain a connection to the land where they lived for over 1000 years and from which they were expelled only 77 years ago?
And if you really believe the canard that the Palestinians were begged to stay, then you really need to study history.
Not 1000 years. "Palestinians" are descendants of Ottoman Syrians. Name of "Palestine" comes from Roman "Syria Paleaestrina" (forgive spelling). "Palestinians" given name by Yasser Arafat. Very recent indeed. They have never been and are not now a cohesive, historical entity, but groupings of tribes, clans, families.
Keep using the word "Nakba" and you will continue to make it clear you are a supporter of Palestiniasm which seeks to destroy Israel. That makes you an enemy.
I disagree with you, NZM. The Arabs have over 50 Muslim countries. Christians have dozens. Jews--they have only one teensy strip of land that they have repeatedly offered to share with the Arabs that call themselves "Palestinians." One place, indigenous to Jews, the only place we can flee to escape repeated persecution--and many Diaspora Jews are doing just that again, now. Each offer to share Israeli land has been rejected, followed by violence. It really isn't about land that they are "connected" to. It's about taking over ALL the land, no Jews, no infidels. This is in the Hamas charter (I assume you've read it) and also proudly stated by all the Islamist terrorists. They have always wanted all Jews and other infidels gone, they've acted on it, and they insist on a Muslim caliphate to include the entire world--that is necessary (they believe) to fulfill their prophecy. So, after all the rejections to share the land, all the terrorism and continued vows to slaughter all Jews (and other infidels, which Islamists are doing around the world), I really don't care about an "injustice" 75 years ago. Also, keep in mind--the current peace deal offers them --again--a "pathway" to two-state solution on the condition they accept Israel/Jews and stop terrorism. They refuse this, again because the goal is NO JEWS OR INFIDELS anywhere, period. And the experiment of Gaza, giving them land and tons of support to create their own space with an eye on future other land possibilities--they created a terror state. You know the story, of course. I'll add that two million Arabs live as citizens in Israel (out of a population of 10 million) and do not want to be under rule of any other Muslim country because they have more rights and benefits living in Israel (most of them are Arabs who stayed in Israel after 1948.) So what is Israel to do? Give them land for another terror state and continued war on the Jews? What do you think should happen?
No it doesn't. Not for a micro second. What is needed is for Palestiniasm and its useful idiot Jewish allies to recognize the "Nakba" as the moment when they failed to destroy the Jews and the Jewish state.
Hi - please return the title and subtitle to the original, and link to the original piece in Prophecy. Thank you.

Ariel, good essay for me to digest, and re-read, thank you. Suggest resist using BC and AD and replace with more accurate, non-Christian, BCE and CE.

Never was optional
